二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、The accent is the way you pronounce the words of a language. Everyone has an accent, and no one is accent-free. And for every accent, there are groups of people who react badly to it. These reactions are the result of prejudice. No accent is free from such prejudices.

I have held and expressed prejudices about other people’s accents. Over the decades, my experience of working with people from a wide range of backgrounds has led me to give up these prejudices. However, I still have prejudices that I find difficult to control in relation to some particular accents.

Language experts tell us that no accent is better than any other. But the reality is that the wider world likes the idea of simple rules which tell us what is right and wrong. We like to judge others on the basis of these rules. If you break these rules, you are somehow to blame. Jacob Rees Mogg recalls when he first stood unsuccessfully for election (选举) in Fife, Scotland: “I gradually realized that whatever I happened to be speaking about, the number of voters in my favor dropped as soon as I opened my mouth.”

And some people make their accents sound gentler when talking to people outside their circle of family and friends. However, Sky News ran a report recently in which a British woman Jemima was trying to sound less posh (上等人的), because she didn’t like random people telling her that she must be rich and from an upper-class background.

Lastly, it’s worth being reminded that people can be accented — even highly accented — and still be easily understood.

【1】What does the author think of accent prejudice?

A.It is reasonable.

B.It is hard to avoid.

C.It should be banned.

D.It causes serious social issues.

【2】Why did Jacob fail in the election?

A.He was unwise.

B.He spoke with an accent.

C.He broke the election rules.

D.He was unable to make himself understood.

【3】What did Jemima try to do according to Sky News?

A.Change her accent.

B.Speak the standard English.

C.Pretend to be a well-educated person.

D.Speak with the upper-class British accent.

【4】Which of the following would the author agree with?

A.People had better speak without an accent.

B.Everybody has prejudices about accents.

C.People should be proud of their accents.

D.People are judged by their accents.

22、Activity ABuild a Roller Coaster(过山车)

Have you ever wanted to design your own roller coaster? There are plenty of expensive toys and even video games that will let you build your own coasters — but in this project you’ll make one out of paper and tape, and learn about roller coaster physics along the way!

Activity BMake Ice Cream in a Bag

Have you ever made ice cream? It can be a lot of fun, and you end up with a tasty frozen treat! There is actually a lot of interesting chemistry that goes on behind making ice cream. For example, think about how you start out with refrigerated materials and then need to cool them down to turn them into ice cream. How do the materials change during this process? How important do you think it is to cool them down to a certain temperature?

Activity CHow Much Weight Can Aluminum Foil Boats Float?

If you drop a steel nail in water, the nail quickly sinks to the bottom. Then how can a steel ship float? And better yet, how can a steel ship carry a heavy load without sinking? It has to do with the density(密度) of the ship compared to the density of water. In this science activity, you will make little “boats” out of aluminum foil to explore how their size affects how much weight they could load.

Activity DMake a Fire Snake

With a few simple elements, you can create a “fire snake” that appears to grow out of nowhere in this fun experiment! Although it looks magical, no magic is involved — it is all because of a chemical reaction. Try it to find out how it works!

【1】What may Activity A teach you to do?

A.Draw a roller coaster.

B.Choose a paper toy.

C.Ride a roller coaster.

D.Make a paper toy.

23、   In 2000, when I was seven years old, my family and I were coming back from a T-ball game.  In our driveway, we spotted two adult geese and a baby goose. The adults were frightened by our return and flew away, but their baby was still too young to fly. We are no strangers to wildlife, so we avoided physical contact with the baby goose out of fear that it would keep us in its mind and be lost to its family forever.

Hours passed, and night fell. The baby goose needed protection, warmth and food. So we had to do something. We brought him onto our back porch (走廊). My sister called the little guy Peeper, because he would follow us making a peeping noise. We also decided that Peeper was a boy.

A year passed and we became best friends. Peeper slept on our back porch and used it as a restroom. My dad would spray off his droppings daily with a hose (软管). Part of this routine included Dad throwing Peeper up into the air, letting him fly around the house and come back once the porch was clean. One evening, my uncle came over, and my dad wanted to show him Peeper’s flight. He threw him up in the air, but Peeper just flew off. Everyone was sad. Twenty years passed, and Peeper became a fond memory.

Geese live to be around 25 years old and are very loyal, never forgetting their first home. Even so, it shocked me when, in 2019, an old adult goose appeared at my house. After two weeks of the goose coming back repeatedly, I believe this wasn’t a random goose. He did all of the same things Peeper used to and responded to the name Peeper. Much to my amazement, my old best friend had returned, 20 years later.

This experience has been as meaningful to me as anything in my life. I hope that my children,  someday, have the opportunity to connect with nature and a wild being in this same way.

1Why did the writer’s family avoid physical contact with the baby goose at first?

A.They were worried about its health.

B.They didn’t know what to do with it.

C.They feared being attacked by its parents.

D.They didn’t want it to take them as its family.

2Why did the writer’s dad throw the goose into the sky every day?

A.To prepare it to fly off some day.

B.To clean it by spraying water.

C.To have it practise flying skills.

D.To show his tricks of training.

3What made the writer recognize the goose?

A.Its voice. B.Its appearance.

C.Its age. D.Its behavior.

4How does the writer find this experience?

A.Discouraging. B.Rewarding.

C.Pitiful. D.Entertaining.

24、Everyone has their favorite food. Some might love chocolate. Some might love potato chips.

Think about your favorite food. Have you ever wondered why your favorite food tastes so good? The answer is about your tongue (舌头) and your nose.

There are some taste buds (味蕾) on your tongue. They give you the sense of taste. How do the taste buds work? In fact, they have many tiny hairs on them. These tiny hairs send messages to your brain about the tastes of different food. In this way, you know whether it is sweet, sour, biter or salty.

An average person has about 10, 000 taste buds. They keep working all the time when we enjoy our food. The taste buds don’t always stay the same. They are replaced every two weeks or so. However, as a person gets older, some of these taste buds don’t get replaced.

An older person may only have 5, 000 working taste buds. That’s why some food may taste stronger for you than they do for an older person.

Besides your tongue, your nose also helps you learn about the taste of food. Sometimes, strong smells can even confuse (使困惑) your sense of taste. Try holding an onion under your nose while eating an apple. What do you taste?

So the next time you enjoy salty pizza and sweet ice cream, thank your tongue and your nose. Without them, you won’t have any sense of taste at all! Without the sense of taste, life will be boring.

【1】Which parts of our body can help us taste the food?

A.Tongue and eyes.

B.Tongue and hairs.

C.Nose and eyes.

D.Tongue and nose.

【2】What can we know about taste buds?

A.Only parts of them work when people are eating.

B.There are tiny hairs sending messages to our brain about the taste of food.

C.The taste buds remain the same for two weeks for all the old people.

D.Most old people have stronger taste buds than the young.

【3】How many working taste buds does an older person usually have?

A.About 5,000.

B.Over 6,000.

C.Over 10,000.

D.About 100,000.

【4】What do you taste if you hold an onion under your nose while eating an apple?

三、完形填空(共1题,共 5分)

25、Two new studies add further pieces to the jigsaw puzzle that is human evolution. One reports a (n)_________extra member of the genus Homo. The other casts _________ on possible interbreeding between three human species in the Middle East.

Homo longi--- “Dragon man” into English from Chinese, via Latin---is not a (n)_________find, but a reinterpretation of an existing one. The cranium (头盖) in question was dug up in Harbin in1933 and is_________at Hebei GEO University, in Shijiazhuang. It is146,000 years old and was_________ badged as an archaic form of Homo sapiens (智人). But Ni Xijun and Ji Qiang, who work at the university, disagree. As they report in the Innovation, the cranium would indeed have contained a brain similar in size to a modern human’s, but the fossil is too large to be sapiens and has molars and eye sockets which dwarf those of people today. Dr Ni and Dr Ji also realised that it is too long and low to be sapiens. It lacks the_________of a modern human cranium.

This is good news for_________ of the recent- African- origin theory, which holds that most non-African human beings alive today are descendants of a small number of migrants who_________to Asia from the Horn of Africa about60, 000 years ago, meaning that any non- African human fossil from before that date is probably of another species descended from earlier, non- sapiens departures from Africa. The question was, which earlier species did the Harbin fossil represent? By_________it with known archaic humans, including Homo erectus, Homo floresiensis, Homo heidelbergensis and Homo neanderthalensis, Dr Ni and Dr Ji__________ that it was none of them, and must therefore be new to science and so worthy of its own name. There is, however, one other possibility-for there is a now-extinct type of human of which no cranium has yet been __________ . Homo denisova’s existence was established by the extraction of DNA from a finger bone, and traces of that DNA, a remnant of interspecies breeding, still exist in modern humans, notably in China. Since one of the Harbin fossil’s molars perfectly matches the size and root __________ of a molar from the Denisova cave in Russia, after which Homo denisova is named, it may be that Dr Ni and Dr Ji have actually identified the first Denisovan cranium.

The other study, published in Science by Israel Hershkovitz of Tel Aviv University, also speaks to the question of interspecific interbreeding. Even supporters of the recent-African-origin theory recognise that there was, __________, an earlier “ leakage” of Homo sapiens from north-east Africa into the Levant. Dr Hershkovitz and his colleagues have been examining fossils of __________ antiquity—120,000-l40,000 years-- collected from Nesher Ramla, a site in Israel. These, they found, have sapiens-like jaw bones, Neanderthal-like molars and crania similar to those of Homo erectus. This suggests to them that they are the __________ of miscegenation between all three.

四、书面表达(共1题,共 5分)

26、Directions: Read the following three passages. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.

Hardworking Brains

It's late in the evening: time to close the book and turn off the computer. You're done for the day. What you may not realize, however, is that the learning process actually continues - in your dreams. It might sound like science fiction, but researchers are increasingly focusing on the relationship between the knowledge and skills our brains absorb during the day and the fragmented, often bizarre(奇怪的)imaginings they generate at night. Scientists have found that dreaming about a task we've learned is associated with improved performance in that activity (suggesting that there's some truth to the popular notion that we're "getting" a foreign language once we begin dreaming in it). What's more, researchers are coming to recognize that dreaming is an essential part of understanding, organizing and keeping what we learn.

While we sleep, research indicates the brain replays the patterns of activity it experienced during waking hours, allowing us to enter what one psychologist calls a neural virtual reality. A vivid example of such replay can be seen in a video researchers made recently about sleep disorders. They taught a series of dance moves to a group of patients with conditions like sleepwalking, in which the sleeper engages in the kind physical movement that does not normally occur during sleep. They then videotaped the subjects as they slept. Lying in bed, eyes closed, one female patient on the tape performs the dance moves she learned earlier.

This shows that while our bodies are at rest, our brains are drawing what's important from the information and events we've recently encountered, then integrating that data into the vast store of what we already know. In a 2010 study, researchers at Harvard Medical School reported that college students who dreamed about a computer maze(迷宫)task they had learned showed a 10-fold improvement in their ability to find their way through the maze compared with participants who did not dream about the task.

Robert Stickgold, one of the Harvard researchers, suggests that studying right before bedtime taking a nap following a study session in the afternoon might increase the odds of dreaming out the material. Think about that as your head hits the pillow tonight.
