二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、   September 8, 2017, was an exciting date for Katey Walter Anthony. On this cool, windless evening she first visited Alaska’s Lake Esieh. Few people visit this remote area of wilderness, covered by frozen ground with spruce trees. Thousands of lakes dot the region. But Walter Anthony quickly realized that this lake was strange. As her boat moved across it, she came to a place where the water seemed to be boiling.

The water wasn’t warm. Bubbles of all sizes streamed up, popping at the surface. One bubble, as large as a softball, gave off a loud sound as it burst. The bubbles, which rose with such force that they slowly pushed her boat to the side, covered a part of the lake larger than a football field.

Walter Anthony leaned over the edge of the boat and collected some bubbles in a bottle. Then she struck a match and opened the bottle to release the gas she had just collected. The gas caught fire!

The fire dancing over the bottle confirmed her belief. It showed that the lake was flowing out a gas called methane. Each molecule(CH4) contains one atom of carbon bonded to four atoms of hydrogen. As a strong greenhouse gas, it can absorb radiation from the sun, warming the atmosphere. Methane, along with carbon dioxide, is a major source of global warming.

Scientists believe that the Arctic could release large amounts of methane over the next 100 years. Some of them worry that this methane will cause the world to warm more quickly than they had predicted.

Walter Anthony has spent nearly 20 years trying to understand this threat. She is trying to measure how much methane is coming out of warming Arctic lakes. And to her, Lake Esieh could be a warning. If other lakes respond the same way, the Arctic could be poised to flow out far more methane than anyone had expected. “We don’t even know how much gas is down there,” she says. “It’s a wild card.”

1Why is Lake Esieh considered strange?

A. The water there is boiling.

B. It is located in a remote area.

C. Bubbles there give off a loud sound.

D. It is flowing out a gas that can catch fire.

2What effect does the gas from the lake have on the environment?

A. It warms the water of the Arctic lakes.

B. It pollutes the fresh air in the Arctic.

C. It takes in the sunlight and holds the Arctic ice.

D. It absorbs carbon dioxide and gives off oxygen.

3How does Walter Anthony feel about the gas methane?

A. It is amusing. B. It is beneficial. C. It is a blessing. D. It is a threat.

4Where might this text come from?

A. A science fiction. B. A tourist brochure.

C. A science report. D. A geography textbook.

22、Zhaobi can be found outside the entrance of a variety of buildings, not to be confused with yingbi which are similar structures found on the other side of the gate, and in their earliest form during the western Zhou dynasty (c.11th century -771BC), were built to serve the function of a wealth and power symbol. They were allowed for only the highest members of society, noblemen, dukes and princes. Seeing zhaobi outside a building would let passers-by know that this is the residence of someone of extreme importance, while also serving the practical function of protecting privacy by blocking the entrance from any spying eyes.

With the passing of time and social changes, by the Tang (618-907) and later Song (960-1279) dynasties, there was less exclusivity about who could build zhaobi, but more importantly there was also a change in the meaning and purpose of the walls. Instead of representing social position, zhaobi took on a more mysterious purpose, coming to play a role in the form of fengshui, a practice which focused on achieving harmony and balance in all things.

It was believed that as well as functioning as a physical block for one’s privacy, zhaobi would act as a deterrent against gui, or wandering dangerous spirits, which would attempt to harm a home, but being unable to turn corners, zhaobi would prevent such action. As well as offering this spiritual protection, their location would allow for better flow of qi, or important energy, helping to conserve it in the building.

Moving further forward in time, zhaobi became more of a form of artistic expression and creativity, with poetry, paintings and characters representing luck and good fortune appearing on the walls, with families using zhaobi as a platform to tell their family history and achievements.

23、   Stephen Hawking was regarded as one of the most brilliant physicists in history. His work on the origins and structure of the universe, from the Big Bang to black holes, changed the field greatly. His best-selling books also appealed to a number of readers.

Stephen Hawking had a challenging life. He was born in England on Jan.8, 1942-300years to the day after the death of the astronomer Galileo Galilei. He attended University College, Oxford, where he studied physics, despite his father’s urging to focus on medicine. Hawking went on to Cambridge to research cosmology.

In early 1963, just before his 21st birthday, Hawking suffered from a serious disease more commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. He was not expected to live more than two years. Completing his doctor’s degree did not appear likely. Yet, Hawking had overcome the great difficulties, not only attaining his Ph. D. but also building new roads into the understanding of the universe in the decades since.

Hawking continued at Cambridge after his graduation, serving as a research fellow and later as a professional fellow. In 1974, he was inducted(正式就职)into the Royal Society, a worldwide fellowship of scientists. In 1979, he was appointed Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge, the most famous academic chair in the world.

As the disease spreadHawking became less mobile and began using a wheelchair. Talking grew more challenging and, in 1985, an emergency tracheotomy(气管切开术)caused his total loss of speech. A speech-generating device was constructed at Cambridge, combined with a software program, serving as his electronic voice and allowing Hawking to select his words by moving the muscles in his cheek. Hawking died on March 14, 2018.

1What greatly influenced the field Stephen Hawking studied

A.Stephen Hawking’s best-selling books.

B.His research on the Big Bang and black holes.

C.Stephen Hawking’s talent.

D.The origins and structure of the universe.

2What does the underlined word “cosmology” in paragraph 2 mean?

A.A research on time. B.A subject of medicine.

C.A study about universe. D.A project in Cambridge.

3What happened to Stephen Hawking in early 1963?

A.He became world famous. B.He achieved his doctor’s degree.

C.He was badly affected by a serious disease D.He built new roads into the understanding of the universe.

4How did Stephen Hawking express himself finally?

A.By using a speech-generating device. B.With the help of an operation.

C.By using body language. D.With the help of some people.

24、   Google is getting further into the business of saving lives. The internet giant announces that users of its Android phones in New Zealand will receive warnings of damaging earthquakes about to strike their locations. And those earthquakes will be detected not by the usual seismometers, but by the phones themselves.

Traditional warnings, even if they only come seconds before a quake hits, can buy people enough time to survive the quake. These systems are practical, but they are difficult and expensive to develop. One system, known as ShakeAlert, cost $60 million to build and needs more than $30 million annually to operate. Such an earthquake warning system as developed by Google can cut down this expense and has great potential globally.

A phone-based network makes earthquake detection possible because modern devices are equipped with motion sensors that monitor movement, such as when a user picks up or rotates the phone. Those sensors can also be programmed to detect the distinctive shaking caused by the pressure and waves of earthquakes.

Google has built quake-sensing capabilities directly into its more than 2 billion active Android phones. When a Android phone detects an earthquake signal, it sends word, along with a rough location, to a central server and more than 100 phones need to sound the alarm before Google believes it. Android phones have been publicly detecting earthquakes worldwide since last year and have detected more than 1000 quakes. The warnings have performed well in terms of speed and accuracy when compared with ShakeAlert. Regardless of it, false alarms haven’t been too hard to weed out.

The Android system still has a lot to prove, including its ability to detect quakes that start in less populated regions. New Zealand will pose a particular challenge, because much of its population is gathered in a few cities. That means phones might not warn of a quake that starts far from downtown until after the trembling has already begun. Until the system’s performance is clear, Google should be cautious of promising too much.

【1】What can we learn from the text?

A.Traditional earthquake warnings are ineffective.

B.Residents in New Zealand have benefited from the new warning system.

C.Motion sensors are built in Android cellphones.

D.ShakeAlert system cost $90 million in total.

【2】Compared to traditional warnings, which is NOT the advantage of Android warning system?

A.Speedier

B.Cheaper

C.More accurate

D.More practical

【3】What can we infer from the underlined sentence in Paragraph 4?

A.It is too hard to identify false alarms.

B.Some false warnings are easy to get rid of.

C.False warnings happen frequently.

D.It is impossible to avoid issuing false warnings.

【4】What’s the best title of the article?

A.Google’s Effort to Detect Earthquakes

B.Google’s Promise to Save More Lives

C.Google’s New Challenge in New Zealand

D.Google’s Announcement about New Zealand
