二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、According to a 2010 report, up to 14 million tons of plastic(塑料) from 192 nations went into the sea that year. That’s more than twice the weight of the Pyramid of Khufu (胡夫金字塔). Plastics stay forever in waterways and the oceans, and sea animals. An amount of (大量的) plastic is harmful to sea animals. Much plastic trash(垃圾) is washed up on the shore, which does harm to the environment.

Angela Haseltine Pozzi didn’t like seeing that on the beach near her home in Bandon. She wanted to call on her community to clean it up. So she started an organization called Washed Ashore: Art to Save the Sea. Since 2010, more than 10,000 volunteers have collected 21 tons of trash from Oregon’s 482 kilometers of shoreline. Using plastic from the beach cleanup, Ms. Pozzi and her staff and many volunteers create sculptures of sea animals.

Ms. Pozzi gives credit to everyone who helps. However little it is, their effort is highly thought of. Some people have picked up the plastic, and others have sorted the items by color. Still others have washed each piece of plastic trash. Ms. Pozzi is responsible for the detail work. More than 70 works of art have been created. Four travelling exhibits have displayed the sculptures in more than 18 places. Most sculptures are about 19 feet tall and take from six months to a year to complete. One of the first is Henry the Giant Fish, a 15footlong fish made of used bottle caps, toys and lighters, which received a great honor.

The Washed Ashore sculptures, hopefully, will make people aware of how so much plastic ends up in the oceans. Now, the Washed Ashore team is working on a sculpture of a dolphin, with plans for more sculptures. "Until we run out of plastic on the beach, the work will continue." Ms. Porzzi says.

23、   What’s your opinion on spicy food? Some people cannot handle even the smallest amount of chili peppers in their dinner while others can’t get enough of them.

Scientists have long been puzzled by why some people love the chili while others loathe it. Plenty of research has been done on the subject, dating as far back as the 1970s. Previous results showed that a love of chilies is related to childhood experiences, and that cultural influences affect our taste too. But the latest study has found that a person’s love of spicy food may be linked to his or her personality (性格) more than anything else, CBC News reported.

“We have always assumed that liking drives intake — we eat what we like and we like what we eat. But no one has actually directly bothered to connect personality with intake of chili peppers,” said Professor John E. Hayes from Pennsylvania State University, who led the study.

But before you look at the study, you should first know that “spicy” is not a taste, unlike sour, sweet, bitter and salty taste. It is, in fact, a burning feeling that you feel on the surface of your tongue. This got scientists thinking that maybe a love of spicy food is brought about by people’s longing for thrill, something they usually get from watching action movies or riding a roller coaster.

In the study, 97 participants, both male and female, were asked to fill out questionnaires about their personality, for example, whether they like new experiences or tend to avoid risks. They were then given a glass of water with capsaicin (辣椒素), the plant chemical that makes a chili burn, mixed into it.

By comparing the answers to the questionnaire and what participants said they felt about the spicy water, researchers found that those who tended to enjoy action movies or take risks were about six times more likely to enjoy the spicy water.

Interestingly, we used to believe that the reason why some people can withstand (耐受) spicy food is that their tongues have become less sensitive to it. However, this latest study has found otherwise. “It’s not that it doesn’t burn as badly, but that you actually learn to like the burning feeling,” Hayes explained.

1What’s the meaning of the underlined word “loathe” in the second paragraph?

A.Dislike. B.Fear.

C.Put up with. D.Adapt to.

2What did Professor John E. Hayes and his team discover from their study?

A.What we eat actually helps to develop our personality.

B.Males are more likely to enjoy spicy food than females.

C.Those trying to avoid risks tend to be less interested in spicy food.

D.People are wrong to treat " spicy" as a kind of taste rather than a feeling.

3Why do some people like spicy food according to the recent study?

A.Because their taste has become less sensitive.

B.Because they love the burning feeling.

C.Because they want to challenge themselves.

D.Because the more they try spicy food, the less it burns.

4What’s the main idea of the passage?

A.What one likes to eat mainly depends on one’s personality.

B.Whether one enjoys spicy food depends largely on one’s personality.

C.One’s personal experiences have nothing to do with their taste.

D.Different people have different taste.

24、Throughout my educational years despite the kind teachers I had met, I never felt interested in writing until I met her, Mrs Kelley. At first, I believed that writing would still be my worst class. Gradually, my fondness increased. She taught the lesson in such a lively way and her word choice impressed me. But that was not what made her my favorite. Unlike other teachers, after instructions, she gave an enormous amount of freedom in what we wrote, allowing us to create our own stories using our imagination. And that mattered most.

There was one really revolutionary event: the historical fiction unit. We were to invent out own stories using the period we were given. World War Ⅱ was mine. At that point, I was just looking for a good grade. Rather than creating a mundane story, I wanted to make a story that I felt was meaningful. As I progressed, I was pulled further and further into the reality that I had made. Grammar no longer existed, as my hands gained acceleration. When I typed the final word, my hands trembled with excitement. Briefly, I read it over and then submitted the draft.

In the midst of anxiousness, Mrs Kelley responded. She pointed out some mistakes and gave some suggestions. Sadly, there were no comments of recognition. I fixed the errors and moved on. But when waiting for the final grade, I erased all the unrealistic thoughts that wandered in my mind.

In the next class, surprisingly, after handing back my paper, Mrs Kelley mentioned that my story was very good. I looked at her in confusion. Soon excitement stirred inside me. I found a“+5” attached to the score. She had given an extra point in “Plot” , adding an “Excellent!” No other teacher had done this. On that day, I felt what it means to be a writer. Mrs Kelley introduced me to the beauty of literature and made writing so enjoyable.

【1】What made Mrs Kelley so special according to the author?

A.Her patience and kindness.

B.Her confidence in students.

C.Her creative teaching style.

D.Her professional knowledge.

【2】How did the author feel when Mrs Kelley responded at first?

A.Excited.

B.Worried.

C.Surprised.

D.Disappointed.

【3】What does the underlined word “mundane” in the second paragraph mean?

A.Dull.

B.Interesting.

C.Special.

D.Unusual.

【4】What was the biggest benefit the author got from Mrs Kelley's   class?

A.Recognizing his talent.

B.Finding the joy of writing.

C.Determining his lifetime career.

D.Acquiring practical writing skills.
