21、Chinese cuisine is widely known and enjoyed all around the world. Who doesn’t long for a favorite Chinese dish? But there is one interesting concept concerning Chinese food which is almost unheard of in the West, and which is becoming increasingly ignored by the youth of the East—the ancient custom of “tonic food”.
Tonic food is food which is consumed to improve one’s well-being or avoid sickness. For instance, it was once the custom for new mothers to eat a sesame oil(麻油) chicken soup every day for the first month after giving birth. It was believed that this dish would benefit the muscles, reduce pain, improve circulation, stimulate sweating, and warm the body. Some foods, such as goat meat and spinach, are seen as “hot”, while others, such as Chinese cabbage and radishes, are seen as “cold”. One should be careful not to eat too much of either “hot” or “cold” food. However, how much “hot” or “cold” food one should eat depends on the time of the year, how the food is prepared and what it is prepared with, and the individual’s health.
The custom of employing tonic food for a healthier life also influences the catering industry. Chinese herbal medicines, such as wolfberry(枸杞子), can be found on many a restaurant menu, either added to fruit tea or as a beneficial addition to a dish. These herbs attract customers, such as overworked office staff, in need of a modest pick-me-up.
So, whether you need to boost your strength with a large helping of chicken soup, or increase your mental powers with a serving of fish soup, you may find that this ancient Chinese custom could be just the tonic you were looking for.

22、 Bradley McConachie, a 33-year-old Australian is actually a student in international relations completing his PhD through Griffith University. He came to Beijing for a cooperative research at Beijing University two years ago. Such an academic life was colorful with a chance offered by the cultural exchanges project, “I’m in China”.
Bradley was lucky to win the most “likes” for his photo story about his life in China and became one of 20 winners to visit locations by the project this summer. All the winners’ experiences were filmed to produce a reality show, My Chinese Working Day, which will be broadcast by mid-September.
Bradley was chosen to work as a recreational manager for a Chinese wedding. The film crew took them to many “amazing sites” and the staff at the resort taught them a lot about how to incorporate modern Chinese features while still keeping traditional customs.
“I would have to say two things stick out as the most memorable: the helicopter ride and talking with the staff at the hotel about how they organize weddings here in China,” he said. That was Bradley’s first time to be in a helicopter, and he was too absorbed with the “stunning” view of the coastline.
“I think it is so important to show other Australians the different landscapes China has to offer. I think so many Australians, when they think about China, imagine the historical sites of Beijing and the exciting things to see in Shanghai but have no idea about other beautiful places, like Sanya or the many other places people have been taken to in this TV series. It was nice to experience these little touches. I was happy to be a part of that experience!” Bradley said.

C.Bradley was impressed by the view of the coastline.
D.Many Australians know little about China.
23、 Scientists often compare coral reefs (珊瑚礁) to underwater rainforests, yet unlike the leafy plant base of a forest, corals are animals. The soft creatures are naturally half-transparent and get their brilliant color from algae (藻类) living inside them. When corals experience stress from hot temperatures or pollution, they halt the interdependent relationship with algae, typically pushing them out and turning white. Corals are still alive when they are white, but they’re at risk and many eventually die, turning dark brown.
Scientists around the world are looking for means to protect and maybe increase corals. One common option is to create more protected areas — essentially national parks in the ocean. Beyond nature preserves, some conservationists are looking for more hands-on methods. One research center in the Florida Keys is exploring a form of natural selection to keep corals remaining. The reef system in the Keys has been hit hard by climate change and pollution, which is especially tough, because corals there help support fisheries worth $ 100 million every year.
To keep the wild ecosystem alive, Erinn Muller, the center’s director, and her team are harvesting samples of the corals that survived the environmental stress naturally, keeping them to make them reproduce, and then reattaching them to the reef. They have 46,000 corals on plastic frames under the sea. So far, the center has regrown over 70,000 corals from five different species on damaged reefs.
In the Bahamas, Ross Cunning, a research biologist at Chicago’s Shedd Aquarium, focuses on corals with genes that could make them natural candidates for restoration projects. He published a study of two Bahamian reefs, one that survived an extreme 2015 heat wave, and one that didn’t. “We think their ability to deal with these higher temperatures is built into their genes,” says Cunning. There’s evidence of corals evolving more quickly to resist rapidly warming climate. The big question scientists need to investigate, adds Gunning, is how much more heat corals can adapt to.
【1】What does the underlined word “halt” in the first paragraph mean?
A.Weaken.
B.Develop.
C.Strengthen.
D.End.
【2】What do Muller and her team do to save corals?
A.Restore the damaged reefs.
B.Grow corals underwater.
C.Create more protected areas.
D.Move corals to unpolluted areas.

A.Many corals have been genetically improved.
B.Cooling down the waters is the key to rescuing corals.
C.The highest temperature corals can survive is unclear.
D.Reasons for corals surviving heat waves need investigation.
【4】Which is the text mainly about?

24、The summer is so hot and sticky, why would we want to sweat even more by exercising? Or is it just I who think like that? Sweat and clothes sticking to our bodies as we move make exercise seem rather uncomfortable. What can be done to fix it?
Researchers at MIT have come up with a solution. They’ve developed a workout suit with flaps that open as the wearer begins sweating. As the person cools off, the flaps shrink until they assume their original position.
Sounds cool, sounds practical. These flaps are lined with live, microbial ( 微生物的)cells. These cells can detect when the body is heating up too much, and in response, expand. It’s just as if they were working within any other organism, recognizing patterns of heating and cooling, then responding appropriately to maintain body temperature. It seems kind of strange to have living cells (that aren’t your own) on you, right? Not to fear, these cells have been believed safe. Plus, there’s a material in the suit that helps the flaps/cells hover ever so slightly above the exerciser's skin. The flaps start opening as soon as people start feeling warm and sweaty, and the bit of space between the suit and the skin helps develop that feeling of cool and refreshing air as they move. For more information about flaps, click here.
According to Gadgetify.com, researchers have also been working to apply this technology to running shoes as well. Moisture-responsive workout clothing has the potential to revolutionize sport fashion industry. People can stay drier, cooler and fresher at the end of the workout, which sounds better than leaving the gym with a trail of sweat and a red face. It’s possible that the comfort of these suits can make people enjoy exercising more and exercise with more intensity.
【1】What’s the purpose of the first paragraph?
A.To introduce the topic.
B.To show his dislike of summer.
C.To give an example.
D.To tell of his dream.
【2】What can’t be learned from the passage?
A.When a person doesn’t sweat, the flaps will come to its original position.
B.The flaps themselves can float slightly around the exerciser’s skin.
C.When a person sweats, the flaps will expand.
D.The flaps are essential to cooling exercisers down.
【3】What’s mainly talked about in the last paragraph?
A.The influence of the technology.
B.The efficiency of the technology.
C.Different reviews on the technology.
D.Author’s attitude to the technology.

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
The Sports Day was fast coming to the school. All the children were very excited and were practicing for the big race. Jim, one of the fast runners of the school was confident that he would win so he was not doing anything at all. “You have to work hard to come first in the race, Jim. You are not practicing at all,” said Jim's mother.
“Mom, you know how fast I am! Then why should I waste my time running? Only I will win;no one else will win!” shouted Jim. “Jim, you may be right but talent without hard work is not good at all. This laziness of yours will cost you greatly,” his mother warned him. Jim just laughed and shrugged (耸肩) his shoulders. He was so confident that would win the prize as no one else in his class was as fast as he was!
Tim, a classmate of Jim was also participating in the running race. He was not a fast runner. However, he was very devoted and practiced till late night and had developed great endurance (耐力) and willpower (意志) to win the race.
There were a few days left for the Sports Day but Jim did not practice at all. On the other hand, Tim practiced day and night. The Sports Day was almost around the corner but Jim was confident that no one could beat him and had not practiced at all. But Tim with his devotion and hard work had become a very fast runner.
At last, the Sports Day arrived. All the students crowded the ground to cheer their favorites. The signal was given to the participants to begin the race. The coach blew the whistle and everyone began to run towards the finishing line. It was so exciting. Jim and Tim left all the racers far behind. Both of them were neck to neck.
