二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、   Shanghai, the first Chinese mainland city to carry out a compulsory garbage classification regulation in July, is using intellectual platforms that can count the amount of garbage residents dump(倒)to promote recycling.

A residential area in Shanghai's Baoshan district is using 10 sets of such smart bins. Through data shown on the screen, staff of the platform will know the amount of garbage collected and when and who dumped them. The smart bin can also help social workers. For example, for elderly people living alone, a social worker will go to their home to check if the elderly people failed to dump garbage.

The "green fortune can!' issued in 2016 by Shanghai environmental authorities is the base of the big data platform. The card is meant to encourage daily garbage sorting and to build an eco-friendly way of life in the city, according to the city government's website. Residents can swipe (刷)the card after selecting the waste type on a screen above the smart bins, and the bin will open automatically. After the trash is dumped, residents will receive corresponding points which they could exchange for small gifts.

The city government said more than 7.28 million Shanghai families have joined the project, and 6.31 million cards have been distributed.  Residents and experts welcomed the use of high-tech equipment in garbage recycling, saying it is more convenient than expected.

But proper garbage handling and necessary construction should catch up to avoid such a good idea from becoming a formalism project, Luo Yameng, a Beijing-based urban-planning and eco-city expert, told the Global Times on Thursday.

In the future, the community's management company would also issue garbage bags attached with QR codes, which would make it convenient for management departments to track residents who break garbage recycling regulations.

The Global Times reporter found that similar measures have been applied in some areas in Beijing, which is drafting its own garbage recycling regulations.

1How does the smart bin help social workers?

A.By signaling when garbage is dumped.

B.By offering data about where garbage is put.

C.By tracing the people who dumped garbage.

D.By showing how much garbage is collected.

2Which of the following is the first step for residents to use the dustbin?

A.Swiping the card.

B.Dumping the garbage.

C.Selecting the waste type.

D.The bin opens automatically.

3What can be learned from the expert Luo Yameng?

A.More and more families will be likely to join the project.

B.Garbage classification needs to be open to further discussion.

C.The use of high-tech equipment is much better than expected.

D.Follow-up measures should be taken to guarantee the success.

4What is the best title for the passage?

A.Green fortune carda card for your family

B.Shanghai gets tough with incorrect trash sorting

C.Big data, smart devices help Shanghai sort garbage

D.Compulsory garbage classification regulation in Shanghai

22、National Potato Day was back on Friday 23rd August 2013. Along with BordBia (Irish Food Board) and many other potato growers in Ireland, Keogh’s Farm brought you a day that was all about potatoes and showing love for our national vegetable.

Keogh’s invited the public to Spud Fest, which took place on Dublin’s South King Street from 12 pm to 4 pm. This festival brought the farm to the city with potato performers, face painters, balloon modeling, music, tastings and plenty of other festival fun to celebrate the most delicious day of the year. There were lots of potatoes, of course.

Keogh’s along with the support of BordBia called on everyone to enjoy at least one potato on National Potato Day. Potatoes are naturally low in fat, a great source of vitamins and minerals and are a great way to support local Irish homegrown produce and businesses.

Tom Keogh, General Manager of Keogh’s Farm said, “We can’t believe we were getting ready for our third year of National Potato Day. When we dreamt the idea up in 2011, we had no idea it would attract so many people. Since the first National Potato Day we have received nothing but interest in potatoes at home and all over the world.

“Ireland is now recognized as one of the finest producers of top quality vegetables, with the potato leading the field. We are happy that BordBia have joined us this year to bring all our fellow potato producers together and join forces to promote (提升) the enjoyment of the potato. We are hoping National Potato Day is a day to encourage everyone to love potatoes!”

23、Math anxiety is far from uncommon, but too often, those who fear the subject simply avoid it. Research from The University of Chicago offers evidence for the link between math anxiety and avoidance.

Studying nearly 500 adults through a computer program called the Choose—And—Solve Task (CAST) the researchers gave participants a choice between math and word problems labeled “easy” and “hard”. The easy problems were always worth two cents, while the hard problems were worth up to six cents. They also informed participants the computer task would modify the questions in the process of testing based on their abilities, enabling them to handle about 70% of the hard problems.

Although participants attempted hard word problems when promised higher monetary prizes, they rarely chose to do the same for math problems. “We found we couldn’t even pay math-anxious individuals to do difficult math problems,” researcher Rozek says.

The findings also contradict a widely held belief that feeling anxious about math and avoiding math-related problems is rooted in being bad at math. “If you take two students good at math, the math-anxious one will do worse at math than the one that isn’t anxious.”

Such a mentality does more than stopping people from taking calculus courses or pursuing a career in STEM. It can affect everyday interactions with math-like leaving a tip in a restaurant. But all is not lost. Reframing their anxiety from negative to positive could help math-anxious people re-engage. Giving those anxious about siting exams guidance may lead them to perform better. “Telling them if you’re anxious, this is your body getting you ready to perform and focus,” Rozek says. Another path may be to create early positive experiences around math. For example, telling stories featuring math and tackling problems around the story may be helpful.

【1】What does the underlined word “modify” mean in paragraph 2?

A.It is the cause of math avoidance.

B.It causes people to be bored of math.

C.It is a complex phenomenon in life.

D.It results from poor math performance.

【4】What is the last paragraph mainly about?

A.Consequences of math avoidance.

B.Ways to break the anxiety-avoidance link.

C.Explanations for math anxiety.

D.Mental barriers to mathematical achievements.

24、My mother died in August 2005. Eight months later, I began to come out of the fog of sadness and depression to find a new purpose for my life.

Like many of my generation, I had lived only for myself —traveling, acquiring possessions, rising to a position of importance and seeking financial rewards. I was “charitable” and “volunteered” for various causes, but really didn’t give of myself.

In the spring after my mom’s death, I found myself waking in the middle of the night with one thought. I felt forced to offer myself as a living kidney donor. My husband Robb had received the gift of life through a kidney transplant(移植)from a dead donor in 1999, so I was familiar with the enormous need for donors and knew several people who were waiting for a lifesaving transplant. I decided to offer myself to be matched with the most compatible(互不排斥的)person on the waiting list at my local transplant center.

I was paired with 71-year-old Dee from New Jerse who had survived for six years on peritoneal dialysis(腹腔透析). At her 70th birthday, her family threw a big party as they did not expect her to live much longer. Dee has become my very good friend. Almost two years after the transplant, I was privileged to celebrate her 50th wedding anniversary with her husband, their five children and their extended family.

In donating my kidney, I extended myself in a way far beyond what I ever believed was possible. I did so in honor of my mother who sacrificed so much for me and my sisters, and in memory of my husband’s donor who extended her 1ife through him.

I encourage all who enjoy the gift of good health to share with others, either as a living donor or by appointing organ donation upon death. By extending yourself through organ donation, you will live on through others in an extraordinary way and give comfort to your loved ones.

1What does the underlined phrase “give of” mean?

A. Relieve.   B. Devote

C. Appreciate   D. Forgive

2What can we infer from Paragraph 4?

A. Dee was the author’s old friend

B. The author attended Dee’s birthday party

C. Dee treated the author as a family member

D. The author’s donation made Dee live six years longer

3What would be the best title for this text?

A. An old lady benefited from organ donation

B. The memory of my beloved mother

C. The deep meaning of love

D. Extend yourself
