21、 Newborns begin to develop language skills long before they begin speaking. And, compared to adults, they develop these skills more quickly. People have a hard time learning new languages as they grow older, but babies have the ability to learn any language easily.
For a long time, scientists have tried to explain how such young children can learn the complicated (复杂的) grammatical rules and sounds of a language. Now, researchers are getting a better idea of what’s happening in the brains of the tiniest language learners. This new information might help kids with learning problems as well as adults who want to learn new languages. It might even help scientists who are trying to design computers that can communicate like people do.
Most babies go “ma ma” by 6 months of age, and most children speak in full sentences by age 3. For many years, scientists have wondered how the brains of young children figure out how to communicate using language. With help from new technologies, scientists are now finding that babies begin life with the ability to learn any language. They get into contact (接触) with other people, listen to what they say and watch their movements very closely. That is why they quickly master the languages they hear most often.
Studies show that, up to about 6 months of age, babies can recognize all the sounds that make up all the languages in the world. Starting at around 6 months old a baby’s brain focuses on the most common sounds it hears. Then, children begin responding only to the sounds of the language they hear the most.
In a similar way older babies start recognizing the patterns that make up the rules of their native language. For example, English children who are about 18 months old start to figure out that words ending in “-ing” or “-ed” are usually verbs, and that verbs are action words.

A. repeating the words of other people
B. remembering the full sentences they hear
C. hearing and closely watching others speak
D. figuring out the meaning of different sounds
【3】In the last two paragraphs, the author explains _____.
A. why babies pay more attention to sounds
B. how babies respond to what they hear most often
C. why verbs in a language attract the most attention of a baby
D. how babies master the grammatical rules of their native language
22、Tragedy struck for brothers Rob and Paul Forkan when they lost their parents in the 2004 Asian tsunami. Now, over ten years later, they're using their flip flop business to help other orphans.
The boys had an unusual childhood. They were just 11 and 13 when their parents, Kevin and Sandra, took them out of the UK education system and moved the family to Goa in India. Their parents were of the philosophy that they would receive a healthier and fuller education by traveling the world and helping others. There they did lots of voluntary work and mixed with the local community. It was when the family were on holiday in Sri Lanka that the tsunami hit. Although the children managed to escape, their parents tragically couldn't. But Paul says their upbringing meant they were able to cope with this tough blow. "Our parents gave us this confidence that we could do anything, that nothing was hard to achieve," says Paul.
What the boys did was to start a business selling ethically-sourced sandals. They're called 'Gandys' after the father of India's independence movement, Mahatma Gandhi. "He was in all our schoolbooks as kids; he's on all the money over in India; he's famous for wearing his flip flops," says Paul. The entire project was inspired by their parents’ philosophy, their globetrotting childhoods and what happened to them in Sri Lanka. Their parents had previously worked in the fashion industry before quitting their jobs and focusing on humanitarian projects. Thus, Gandys is a very fitting tribute to their lives. Gandys sells flip-flops and donates 10 percent of the profits from every pair sold to orphans around the globe. In conjunction with Gandys, the Forkans also founded Orphans for Orphans, a charitable organization dedicated to helping orphans. They say they can make a profit and do good at the same time: they give 10% of their profit to charity, and have set up their own foundation through which they've been able to open a children's home in Sri Lanka.
This year alone, Gandys has sold 250,000 pairs of flip flops, which is only expected to increase. In 2013, the business made around 1.2 million pounds ($1.8 million). With more profits, more orphans will receive assistance. Hence, it’s safe to say that the Forkan brothers are making their parents very proud.

23、 In an effort to prevent Cyber-bullying (网络欺凌), a 13 year-old girl has created a project that makes teens think twice about what they are posting, and rethink whether they actually want to send a potentially hurtful message.
Trisha Prabhu’s “Rethink” project has already earned her a spot in Google’s 15 Global Science Fair finalists. The theory behind her creation is that a child’s brain tends to be less developed than an adult’s and therefore teens are more impulsive in what they write and don’t understand the possible consequences of their words.
“Research shows that, over 50 percent of teenagers and teens have been bullied online and 10 to 20 percent experience it regularly. I supposed that if teenagers were provided an alert mechanism (警示机制) that suggested them rethinking their decision if they expressed willingness to post a mean message on social media, the number of mean messages would be less than those who are not provided with such an aid”, the Illinois native said on her project site.
The figures certainly show that her study is working, as she was able to prove that 93.4 percent of teens decided not to post a hurtful comment after they were given the option of reviewing the contents of what they had written.
However, the 13 year-old is not content to rest on her achievements and is already planning her next project. She is looking to see how the ‘Rethink’ system could work with various social media and apps to prevent cyber-bullying at source. “My design includes an advanced system that catches truly aggressive messages and works with social media sites on web or mobile platforms.”

B.It makes teenagers rethink before posting messages online.

【3】What can be learned about Prabhu from the text?
A.She has won the competition at the Google Global Science Fair.
B.She runs her project mainly by interviewing teens on social networks.
C.Her project doesn’t work because teens still post hurtful messages.
D.Her next plan is to prevent Cyber-bullying with an advanced system.

C.The “Rethink” Project Wins the Award D.A 13-year-old’s Project to Prevent Cyber-bullying
24、Though many people think of summer as a time to slow down and enjoy a vacation, it can also be the perfect time to make money or get experience. Here are some good summer jobs for you.
Survey-taking
Survey-taking is a way to make money during your summer holiday, especially if you live in an area that doesn’t have many chances. With a computer or smartphone, you can sit on your sofa and search for survey sites such as Surveys On The Go, InboxDollars or Swagbucks. Without much effort, you can start making money for your opinions. However, the ease of use comes with a low earning potential.
Food Delivery(递送)
If you enjoy driving, you can use your car to deliver food. You can sign up to deliver food from restaurants with services such as Uber Eats, DoorDash and Grubhub. Another choice is delivering daily used goods with services such as Postmates, Shipt and Instacart. The earning potential for delivery can be higher than for other jobs because customers often give tips. The disadvantage is that these jobs require you to put in more time.
Photo Applications
If you go to the mall, you can use an app such as Field Agent or Gigwalk to make money by taking pictures of products in stores. See any help-wanted signs in the store windows? Take a picture and get paid for each one you find.
House Sitting and Pet Care
Summer is a time when people take vacations and may need someone to look after their homes or pets. Services such as HouseSitter and MindMyHouse connect homeowners with proper house sitters(看房人).
