二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、Famous Irish poet Oscar Wilde (1854-1900) once wrote: “Ah! Realize your youth while you have it.” He pointed out the important truth about how precious youth is in one’s journey through life.

However, the popular Internet slang word foxi—or “Buddhist”—is challenging this norm by encouraging young people to remain calm and peaceful and avoid conflict as much as possible—in other words, to live like a Buddha.

The phrase was reportedly created in Japan in 2014 to describe young men who no longer bother to start relationships with women or follow someone else’s life path. They prefer to stay in their own peaceful world without being disturbed and care little about passion and success.

Now, Chinese Internet users are paring the phrase with other words to describe a similar mindset. For example, “Buddhist students” are those who study just the right amount—they don’t cut class, but they don’t burn the midnight oil, either. There are also “Buddhist parents”, who interfere (干涉) little with their children’s lives and let them develop however they like—the opposite of “helicopter parents”.

In this fast-changing and competitive world, it’s only natural that people are seeking a spiritual anchor (精神支柱).

However, some would compare foxi with “demotivational culture”—a phrase that describes young people without aim and power. They say that foxi actually reflects the reality that young people are losing their will to fight. They are pretending to keep a healthy and wise attitude toward failure simply because they’re incapable of succeeding.

But no matter what, there is one thing that “Buddhist youngsters” should keep in mind: You may want to keep a calm mindset regarding failure, but you should also be passionate and positive about school, work and life.

After all, Wilde also wrote: “Live the wonderful life that is in you! Let nothing be lost upon you. Be always searching for new sensations (感觉). Be afraid of nothing.”

1What is a Buddhist youngster unwilling to do?

A. Read books alone in a quiet place.

B. Complete assignments as instructed.

C. Get involved in a fierce competition.

D. Allow children to develop naturally.

2What does the underlined word “demotivational” in paragraph 6 mean?

A. Aimless and powerless.   B. Hopeless and realistic.

C. Discouraged and fearlful.   D. Intelligent and positive.

3What’s the author’s attitude towards “Buddhist”?

A. Supportive.   B. Neutral.   C. Critical.   D. Doubtful.

22、   The Ig Nobel Prize, a spoof (滑稽模仿) of the actual Nobel Prize, exists to award the 10 strangest research projects of the year that bring you fun and make you think. The following are three of them in 2019.

Medicine Prize: Pizza

It’s one of the world’s most popular foods. According to the Ig Nobel Medicine Prize winner, eating more pizzas can lower the risk of cancer and heart disease if your pizza is loaded with fruits and veggies. These provide flavonoids (类黄酮) to fight against certain diseases. So, if you’re a pizza enthusiast, you now have one more reason to love it!

Economics Prize: Dirty Money

Paper money, the most frequently passed items on the planet, is known to pick up all kinds of bacteria. Which country’s currency is the dirtiest? An international team compared seven countries’ paper money. The Romanian Leu was the only one to carry all three types of bacteria tested. And the US Dollar was also a finalist. Perhaps this will make cashless payments more popular.

Biology Prize: Cockroach

Cockroaches (蟑螂) are well known for their survival abilities, but few folks know they can sense magnetic fields. More surprisingly, an international team found that dead cockroaches have more magnetic properties (磁性) than live ones. That’s because magnetic properties decrease when the temperature gets higher. So if you can stand cockroaches, they may be good magnetic sensors.

1What do the three prizes have in common?

A.They are well-known to the general public.

B.They are entertaining and unusual.

C.They’ve gained the recognition of the Nobel Prize.

D.They are stranger than any other project in previous years.

2What can we learn from the passage?

A.People with heart disease should eat more pizzas.

B.US Dollar is relatively dirtier than Romanian Leu.

C.Dirty paper money leads to cashless payments.

D.Dead cockroaches are better magnetic sensors than live ones.

3In which column can you find this passage in a newspaper?

A.Discovery. B.Sports. C.Health. D.Business.

23、What makes sports fun?

What makes organized sports fun for kids? A group at George Washington University (GW), led by Professor Amanda J. Visek, has been studying this question. The research is important because lots of kids give up playing sports around age 13 or 14.

The reason kids quit? 1 So if the group can figure out what makes sports fun, maybe more kids will play longer and develop better lifelong exercise habits.

First, the group brainstormed 81 things called "fun determinants" that can make sports fun. Then they asked the players aged 8 to 18 to assess how important each thing was to their enjoyment of playing organized sports. 2 The players ranked(排名) “winning” as only the 40th most important fun determinant. Unexpectedly, they ranked "trying your best," "exercising and being active" and “getting along with your teammates" in the top 10 most important fun determinants.

3 They also compared younger athletes with older athletes as well as recreational athletes and kids who play on travel teams. The recent study revealed (揭露) more surprises. Some people think girls like sports because they want to be with their friends, while boys like to compete. 4 It's true boys placed slightly more importance on "improving athletic skills to play at the next level," but for the most part, the study found male and female athletes’ answers were very close. 5 Although there were some differences between the groups -younger players, for example, like "playing different positions" more than older players-the groups shared lots of the same attitudes toward what makes sports fun.

A.The result was surprising

B.They say sports aren't fun anymore.

C.Boys and girls react differently toward sports.

D.Different groups have different opinions on fun determinants.

E.The group compared males' and females' attitudes on what makes sports fun.

F.The study, however, showed girls' and boys’ attitudes were more alike than different.

G.The same was true for younger and older players as well as recreational and travel athletes.

24、In the late 1960s, the anthropologist (人类学家) Edmund Carpenter arrived in New Cuinea armed with mirrors, videos and Polaroid cameras, and a mission: to disrupt (扰乱) the minds of members of the Biami tribe, who had never seen full reflections or images of themselves. "After their first astonished response---covering their mouths and ducking their heads---they stood frozen, staring at their images." Carpenter's devices disturb that inner image, causing discomfort. But not for long. Within days, the villagers groomed (打扮) themselves openly before mirrors and began taking Polaroid shots of each other.

It's unclear if the People of Biami were really as unfamiliar with mirrors as Carpenter thought. But in any case, what's striking isn't how strange their reaction seems, but how related. Do you know how it feels when you make a pleasant remark in a lift, but nobody responds? Or when two people greeting each other misjudge whether to go for a handshake, a hug or a social kiss? That's the same awkwardness: "self-consciousness tinged with uncertainty", as Dahl defines it. Suddenly, I see I'm viewed not as a friendly conversationalist, but as a strange person who talks in the lift.

As awkwardness feels unpleasant, it's natural to want to overcome it. Dahl's initial motivation for writing her book Cringeworthy: A Theory of Awkwardness, was to get over her own awkwardness. But after a journey through various awkward experiences, she makes a persuasive case for celebrating it. We live in an era with more opportunities than ever to do so. But awkwardness breaks that false appearance, exposing the imperfect life behind it. It creates a strange kind of social bond---how much in common we have when seeing that behind the disguise (伪装) ---we're all just trying our best to seem perfect.

The awkward you, then, are the real you, the one without the defensive performance. Dahl even indicates that taking a friendlier attitude toward awkwardness might help us make the connections with people holding different ideas.

【1】How did the people of Biami feel when they first saw themselves in the mirror?

A.Shocked at their reflections.

B.Satisfied with their images.

C.Curious about their look.

D.Ashamed of their appearance.

【2】Which of the following awkwardness is "self-consciousness tinged with uncertainty"?

B.You are caught cheating but get nothing in an exam.

C.You are found standing in pubic with your trousers zip open.

D.You're refused when offering your seat to a seemingly pregnant woman.

【3】What causes you to feel embarrassed from time to time?

A.Not knowing anything novel.

B.Seeking perfection.

C.Avoiding pressure from others.

D.Lacking courage to face some problems.

【4】What can be inferred to solve our awkwardness?

A.Treat others in a friendly way.

B.Connect with your friends regularly.
