22、In 1975, a San Diego homemaker named Marjorie Rice came across a column in Scientific American about tiling, a problem that has interested mathematicians since ancient Greek times. After Rice’s chance encounter with tilings, family members often saw her in the kitchen constantly drawing shapes. “I thought she was just drawing casually,” her daughter Kathy said. But Rice who took only one year of math in high school, was actually discovering never-before-seen patterns.

Born in Florida, Rice went to a one-room country school where she skipped two grades and studied with the older kids. Though she loved learning and particularly her brief exposure to math, tight budget and social culture prevented her family from even considering that she might attend college. “For Rice, math was a pleasure”. Her son David once said,“She was crazy about pyramids and studied them with extensive drawings and calculations”.

Rice gave one of her sons a subscription to Scientific American partly because she could read it carefully while the children were at school. When she read Gardner’s column about tiling as she later recalled in an interview:“I thought it must be wonderful that someone could discover these beautiful patterns which no one had seen before.” She also wrote in an essay, “My interest was engaged by the subject and I wanted to understand every detail of it. Lacking a mathematical background, I developed my own symbol system and in a few months discovered a new type.”

Astonished and delighted, she sent her work to Gardner, who sent it to Doris, a tiling expert at Moravian College. Doris confirmed that Rice’s finding was correct.

Rice declined to lecture on her discoveries, citing shyness, but at Doris’s invitation, she attended a university mathematics meeting, where she was introduced to the audience. Rice still said nothing of her achievements to her children, but they eventually found out as the awards mounted.

【3】Why does the author mention “a subscription to Scientific American” in Paragraph 3?

A.To show her family was on a tight budget.

【4】Which of the following best describes Rice?

A.Devoted and proud.

23、Security—for the information on your smartphone, as well as for the phone itself---is a hot topic these days. The truth is that you’re packing a lot of sensitive information on your phone, and you should keep it safe.

When it comes to physical security, iPhone users would do well to download Find My iPhone, a free app from Apple that allows you to visit a website and see your (lost, stolen or misplaced) phone on the map. You can then sound an alarm, send a message that will pop up on its screen, lock the phone or erase all your data.

Android does not have an exact equivalent(等价物), but there are plenty of alternatives. A free app called Lookout offers the find-my-phone feature. The paid version allows you to wipe the data from your phone remotely.

Then there is your coffee shop’s WiFi network. Anyone with minimal technical expert skill can snoop on(窥视) people using shared wireless networks, harvesting passwords and other personal data. Lookout’s apps will caution you when you’ve logged on to an insecure network, but cannot protect you once you’re there.

In order to protect yourself on such networks, you can use a virtual private network, or V.P.N. This turns all your activity into nonsense to anyone trying to read along with you from across the Starbucks. It also keeps websites from tracking you and, if you’re traveling, allows you to get access to sites that may be blocked in other countries.

If you have an iPhone, the simplest V.P.N. app is probably Hotspot Shield, whose distinguishing feature is said to be that it automatically kicks in each time you start browsing (浏览), as opposed to other V.P.N. apps that require you to start them up manually(手动). This matters, because even if you decide you want a V.P.N. app, you want to spend approximately zero time thinking about it. For the most part, thatwas true of Hotspot Shield, though occasionally it took a while to connect or temporarily lost connection without warning. I found myself having to turn the app on and off sometimes, which involved setting my phone constantly.

If even reading about the setting on your phone drives you crazy, then it is probably best to stay away from a V.P.N. app. But if you’re the type who can’t resist checking your bank balance from your comer bar, the hassle (麻烦) may be preferable to the risk.

1Which of the following can warn you against the insecure network?

A. Android   B. V.P.N.

C. Lookout   D. Find My iPhone

2By using V.P.N., users can ________.

A. find their lost phone on the Internet

B. remove all the data form the phone remotely

C. check the bank balance now and then

D. save their browsing from being tracked

3The underlined word “that” in Para.6 refers to the fact that _________.

A. a V.P.N. app kicks in automatically

B. the users starts V.P.N. apps manually

C. the app take a while to connect

D. users spend no time thinking about it

24、With more recognition than Halloween and less than Christmas,Valentine's Day as an imported festival faces a dangerous situation in China, where it's caught between forces of tradition and fashion.Valentine’s Day has a natural enemy in China. And it is not the Chinese equivalent, which falls on the seventh day of the seventh month on the lunar calendar, usually around half a year away from Feb.14. It is the Spring Festival, also known as the Chinese New Year, that will influence the Feast of Saint Valentine.

The real disagreement between East and West probably took place over a century ago, when China’s door was forced open by Western powers and Chinese scholars supported westernization as a means to strengthen our nation’s ability to compete.

The introduction of the solar calendar and Western measurements was both an acknowledgment of their influence and an effort to be accepted by the world order.

For a full century, we have had two systems running in parallel. When it comes to the eventual outcome, practicality usually beats all other concerns. Laws can help, such as the three traditional festivals of Tomb Sweeping, Dragon Boat and Mid-Autumn gaining legal status in 2008 and giving every Chinese citizen a day off, but laws cannot push what people have no feelings for. So, the celebration or boycott of imported holidays or homegrown ones should be no cause for worry. If they are irrelevant, no social media will change the public’s mind; and if they are accepted, there must be a need which they happen to satisfy.

Since we have no global Qin Shihuang to force one system on every country,we can always rely on a dual (双重的) approach by which we share with the outside world on the one hand but preserve our own ways of life on the other.

【1】What does the author think about Valentine's Day in present China? ______

A.It meets with a natural enemy.

B.It is better known than Christmas.

C.It strongly attacks Chinese culture.

D.It is more popular with young people.

【2】The underlined word “equivalent” in the first paragraph refers to ______ .

A.the Dragon-boat Festival

B.the Spring Festival

C.the Mid-autumn Festival

D.the Chinese Valentine's Day

【3】According to the author, the leading factor to decide what to celebrate is ______ .

A.current laws

B.people’s needs

C.public media

D.age-old tradition

【4】The author believes that ______ .

A.the conflict between the East and the West will last long

B.Chinese festivals are to be paid more attention to in years

C.both Chinese and foreign systems of festivals can co-exist in China

D.this cultural shock is normal and will be received by more people in the future
