二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、Constant notifications(通知)on your phone. TV news specials in place of your favourite sports show. WhatsApp and Messenger full of COVID-19 articles your out-of-touch aunt just “had to share”.Sound familiar? If our daily news intake was counted in calories, many of us would have put on even more weight in recent months.

While audience numbers for network television news shows remain much higher than usual in many countries, ratings are, in some places, starting to decrease. In the UK, news shows have recorded their lowest audience figures since the country went into lockdown. The Nieman Journalism Lab, part of Harvard University, recently reported that “news traffic to news sites, both in the US and around the world, is pretty much back to pre-coronavirus levels”.

There are also many people who are finding themselves consumed by the news cycle mole than usual. Journalists, communications professionals, doctors, scientist and, most recently. disinfectant (消毒剂) producers are among those having to stay on top of daily comments and data in a way they've never previously experience. For many, this is happening while they are working from home and managing blurred(模糊的)boundaries between their work and private lives.

So how should we balance news fatigue and anxiety with the need to remain informed on the latest news during the crisis? John-Paul Davies. a London-based expert, argues that for most of us, checking the headlines once a day is a sensible goal. This could be reduced to once a week for those with high levels of anxiety. He says it is also important to select “a trusted news site' or radio station with a focus on “facts rather than guesses”.

For those whose work is connected to the coronavirus crisis, experts accept it may be much harder to reduce news consumption. But John-Paul Davies says it's still important to make an effort to “put boundaries” around how much information you watch or read. Liz Martin, a therapist based in London, recommends regular digital check-ins with workmates doing similar roles. “It's really important to be a support to one another,” she argues.

22、   Generally speaking, people like those who have a good sense of humor.

Sometimes a touch of humor might well enable us to win. Consider the case of a young friend of mine, who hit a traffic jam on his way to work shortly after receiving an ultimatum (最后通牒) about being late on the job. Although there was a good reason for Brian’s being late—serious illness at home—he decided that this by-now-familiar excuse wouldn’t work any longer. His boss was probably already pacing up and down preparing a dismissal speech.

Yes, the boss was, as Brian entered the office at 9:35. The place was as quiet as a locker room (更衣室): everyone was hard at work. Brian’s boss came up to him. Suddenly, Brian forced a smile and stretched out his hand. “How do you do!” he said. “I’m Brian. I’m applying for a job, which, I understand, became available just 35 minutes ago. Doesn’t the early bird get the worm?”

The room exploded in laughter. The boss clamped off a smile and walked back to his office. Brian had saved his job, with the only tool that could win—a laugh.

Humor is a most effective, yet frequently neglected means of handling the difficult situations in our lives. It can be used for patching up differences, apologizing, saying “no”, criticizing, getting the other fellow to do what you want without his losing face. For some jobs, it’s the only tool that can succeed. It is a way to discuss subjects so sensitive that serious dialog may start a quarrel. For example, many believe that comedians on television are doing more today for racial and religious tolerance (忍受力) than people in any other forum.

A. he got up late B. he was seriously ill

C. he was caught in a traffic jam D. he was busy applying for a new job

B. Brian was supposed to arrive at his office at 8: 30.

C. It wasn’t the first time that Brian came late for work.

D. Humor is the most interesting way of solving problems.

23、A computer programme can identify breast cancer from routine scans with greater accuracy than human experts. Researchers said that could prove a breakthrough in the fight against the global killer.

Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers in women, and regular screening is key to discovering signs of the disease in patients before they show obvious symptoms. In Britain, women over 50 are advised to get a mammogram, an X-ray picture of the breast, every three years, and the results are analyzed by two independent experts. But interpreting the scans leaves room for error, and a small percentage of all mammograms either return a false positive—misdiagnosing(误诊) a healthy patient as having cancer-or false negative—missing the disease as it spreads.

Now researchers have trained an artificial intelligence(AI)model to detect cancer in breast scans from thousands of women in Britain and the US. The images had already been reviewed by doctors in real life, but unlike in a clinical setting, the machine had no patient history to inform its diagnosis.

The team found that their AI model could predict breast cancer from the scans with a similar accuracy level to expert radiographers(放射技师). Further, the ad showed a reduction in the cases where cancer was incorrectly identified — 5.7 percent in the US and 1.2 percent in Britain, respectively. It also reduced the percentage of missed diagnosed by 9.4 percent among US patients and by 2.7 percent in Britain.

“Application of AI is definitely great progress for the field. We think about this technology in a way that enabled an expert, or a patient finally, to get the best outcome from whatever diagnosed they've had.” said Dominic King, leader of the research group. “There's an opportunity to perfect the existing service by comparing the computer's decision with that of the first human reviewer to test his diagnosis. If the two agreed, the case was marked as reliable. That could also save the workload for another doctor.”

【1】What can we infer about mammogram from Paragraph 2?

A.It is carried out by two independent experts.

B.It is a must for all women over fifty in Britain.

C.It has proved a breakthrough in detecting cancer.

D.It plays a key role in identifying breast cancer earlier.

【2】How is Paragraph 4 mainly developed?

A.By giving examples.

B.By making comparisons.

C.By following time order.

D.By analyzing causes and results.

【3】What does Dominic King advise?

A.Reducing the workload of medical staff.

B.Training more experts to use all technology.

C.Using the AI technology as a second opinion.

D.Applying AI models to as many fields as possible.

【4】What is the best title for the text?

B.Fights against various cancers show promise

C.AI is widely used in health care in Britain

24、Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.

Your Own Best Friend

Talking to yourself may seem a little shameful. If you’ve ever been overheard criticizing yourself for a foolish mistake or practicing a tricky speech ahead of time, you’ll have felt the social restriction against communicating with yourself in words. According to the well-known saying, talking to yourself is the first sign of madness.

【1】Talking to ourselves, whether out loud or silently in our heads, is a valuable tool for thought. Far from being a sign of foolishness, self-talk allows us to plan what we are going to do, manage our activities, regulate our emotions and even create a narrative of our experience.

Take a trip to any preschool and watch a small child playing with her toys. You are very likely to hear her talking to herself: offering herself directions and giving voice to her frustrations. 【2】We do a lot of it when we are young — perhaps one reason for our shyness about continuing with it as adults.

As children, according to the Russian psychologist Lev Vygotsky, we use private speech to regulate our actions in the same way that we use public speech to control the behavior of others. 【3】

Psychological experiments have shown that the distancing effect of our words can give us a valuable perspective on our actions. One recent study suggested that self-talk is most effective when we address ourselves in the second person: as “you” rather than “I”.

We internalize the private speech we use as children — but we never entirely put away the out-loud version. 【4】You’re sure to see an athlete or two getting themselves ready for a sharp phrase or scolding themselves after a bad shot.

Both kinds of self-talk seem to bring a range of benefits to our thinking. Those words to the self, spoken silently or aloud, are so much more than lazy talk.

A.But there’s no need for embarrassment.

B.If you want proof, turn on the sports channel.

C.As we grow older, we don’t abandon this system – we internalize it.

D.This so-called inner speech can improve our performance on various tasks.

E.Conducting a dialogue with ourselves might turn out to be one of the keys to human creativity.

F.Psychologists refer to this as private speech — language that is spoken out loud but directed at the self.
