二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、   A short while ago, I lost access to my WeChat account. I am not sure why it wouldn’t let me log in; perhaps it was my ancient, out-of-date phone. But I wasn’t too upset because it offered me an opportunity to take a break from social media --- something more and more people are doing.

In the United States, Twitter is losing millions of users each month and Facebook has seen a 44 percent decline among its younger users. Some of these users may have deserted Twitter and Facebook for other social media platforms, while many others have quit because they felt that social media was having a negative effect on their happiness and overall quality of life.

Stars such as Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeren have taken a break from social media because they were tired of many Internet trolls(网络喷子) leaving negative comments. Ordinary people (like me) are turning away from it because of the feeling that they were spending more time online and enjoying it less.

It is not unusual for people to spend two or three hours a day posing or reading posts, to the point where it becomes an addiction. And it is an addiction. There is a chemical in your brain known as dopamine(多巴胺) which is sometimes called the “reward molecule” and its release gives you a feeling of pleasure. For instance, when you post a photo on WeChat and get a hundred likes, you feel happy. That’s dopamine at work.

In my case, being off WeChat left me with a feeling of anxiety for a few days. No doubt I missed my dopamine. And I got e-mails from friends wondering if I was fine or if I was just being anti-social. But I soon began to feel quite peaceful and started to worry less about what other people were doing and concentrate more on my personal life. And it is an added bonus that I’m getting better sleep at night.

I’m not advocating that all of you quit social media, but spending less time on these platforms does bring you advantages. You could start by leaving your phone at home when you go to school (For some, that’s already a school rule). And it is also a good idea to charge your phone outside of your bedroom at night, as you are unlikely to get a good night’s sleep when the notification(通知) bell keeps ringing.

Someday I may reconnect with my WeChat account, but I' m not in a hurry. Life can be more relaxing and just as interesting without it.

1The author’s disconnection with WeChat is mentioned at the beginning to _________.

A.introduce the disadvantages of social media

B.explain why he lost access to his WeChat account

D.Social media add to people’s happiness and life convenience.

3The fourth paragraph mainly talks about _________.

A.how dopamine works when you are posting or reading posts.

B.the reason behind people’s addiction to social media.

C.why WeChat is so popular among ordinary people.

D.what you can do if you want to get many likes on WeChat.

4What is the author’s attitude towards social media?

A.To turn away from them as soon as possible.

B.To choose a social media platform that suits you.

C.To keep away from them temporarily is a wise choice.

D.To quit them will make your life more relaxing and interesting.

22、Researchers have developed new software using smartphones’ GPS and imaging abilities that determine the exact location of distant objects as well as monitor the speed and direction of moving objects. The software could eventually allow smartphonearmed soldiers to target the location of their enemies. On the home front, the software could be used by everyone, including golfers judging distance to the green and biologists documenting the location of a rare animal without disturbing it.

“The great advantage of a smartphone is that it provides so many tools in a single, readily available, relatively inexpensive package,” said Wang Qia, a doctoral student who led the development of the software.“For example, on the battlefield, a soldier needs a rangefinder, compass, GPS and other tools to get information before calling in an air strike. With our software, the soldier can have all those instruments in one device that can be purchased off the shelf. When that soldier returns from war, she can use the same software to protect her family by clocking a speeder near her cauldron’s school and cat clung the criminal on video.

Wang and his colleagues developed their software to locate and track:

Targets of known size — when the size of the target is known, a single image is enough to pinpoint the target’s location.

Targets of unknown size — if the exact size of a target is unknown, the software uses two images to triangulate the location of the target.

Moving targets — by taking a short video of a moving target, the smartphone software can calculate how fast the target is moving and in what direction it is going.

“Currently, our software is limited by the physical abilities of smartphone hardware, but the devices are improving rapidly,” Wang said.“We expect that improvements in GPS accuracy, battery life and camera resolution will allow our software to make even more accurate observations.”

23、Japanese automaker Toyota says it will team up with the country’s space agency to develop a vehicle called the Lunar Cruiser to explore the moon. The name comes from a popular Toyota vehicle called the Land Cruiser. The company said it plans to launch the vehicle in the late 2020s. After that, Toyota said the vehicle could assist people living on the moon by 2040 and could possibly be sent to Mars as well.

Takao Sato heads the company’s Lunar Cruiser project. He told The Associated Press the vehicle is based on the idea that people eat, work, sleep and communicate with others safely in cars. He hopes theLunar Cruiser can serve the same purpose in space. “We see space as an area for our once-in-a-century transformation, ” Sato said, “By going to space, we may be able to develop telecommunications and other technology that will prove valuable to human life. ”

Another company, Gitai Japan Inc., is partnering with Toyota to develop a robotic arm for the Lunar Cruiser. It will be designed to perform jobs such as carrying out inspections and maintaining the vehicle. The company said the arm will be built to work with different tools. These tools could be used to study the moon’s surface more closely.

Interest in space has been growing in Japan in recent years. Japanese space exploration company iSpace announced last April that it would transport an explorer belonging to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to the moon in 2022. Japan’s iSpace will provide the lander to carry the UAE’s rover(探测器).

The company plans to launch the lander on a Falcon 9 rocket built by American company SpaceX. Japanese citizens followed the trip to space last year of billionaire Yusaku Maezawa. He spent 12 days aboard the International Space Station. Maezawa also plans in the future to orbit around the moon on a SpaceX’s Starship spacecraft.

Toyota engineer Shinichiro Noda said he thinks the lunar project can extend the company’s tradition of serving customers to a place beyond Earth. He said Toyota currently has vehicles almost everywhere. “But this is about taking our cars to somewhere we have never been, ” Noda said.

24、The character “duang” is so new that it does not even exist in the Chinese dictionary. But it has already spread like wildfire online in China, appearing more than 8 million times on China’s micro-blogging site Weibo, where it spawned a top-trending hashtag(标签) that drew 312,000 discussions among 15,000 users. On China’s biggest online search engine Baidu, it has been looked up almost 600,000 times. It’s been noticed in the West too, with Foreign Policy seeing it as a “break the internet” viral meme like a certain Kirn Kardashian image, or a certain multicoloured dress.

But what does it mean? “Everyone’s duang-ing and I still don’t know what it means! As if it’s back to school for me,” said Weibo user Weileiweito. Another user asked: “Have you duang-ed today? My mind is full of duang duang duang.” “To duang or not to duang, that is the question,” wrote user BaiKut automan.

“Duang” seems to be an example of onomatopoeia(拟声词), a word that phonetically imitates a sound. It all seems to have started with Hong Kong action star Jackie Chan, who in 2004 was featured in a shampoo commercial where he said famously defended his sleek, black hair using the rhythmical-sounding “duang”. The word resurfaced again recently after Chan posted it on his Weibo page. Thousands of users then began to flood Chan’s Weibo page with comments, coining the word in reference to his infamous shampoo appearance.

The word appears to have many different meanings, and there’s no perfect translation, but you could use it as an adjective to give emphasis to the word that follows it. A kitten might be “duang cute”, for example. Or you might be “very duang confused” by this blog.

For readers of Chinese characters, the Jackie Chan theme is also apparent from the quirky(古怪的) way in which the word is written: a combination of Chan’s Mandarin names.

【1】How does the writer try to prove that Duang has already spread like wildfire online in China?

A. giving examples   B. listing numbers

C. making comparisons   D. offering quotations

【2】Why does the author mention “a certain Kirn Kardashian image”?

A. to tell us “Duang” also draws attention in the West.

B. to tell us “Duang” is just like a certain image on a certain multicolored dress.

C. to tell us Foreign Policy doesn’t like “Duang”.

D. to tell us a certain Kim Kardashian image breaks the internet.

【3】 Which of the following statements about “duang” is NOT true?

A. It came from Jackie chan’s commertial.

B. Weibo users created the word about his infamous shampoo appearance.

C. It was first used as an adjective to stress the word that follows it.

D. Many people are confused by the word.

【4】What kind of people may not know the word “duang”?

A. the old who are over sixties

B. the young who are in fashion

C. a boy who has dropped out of school

D. a woman who never surfs the internet

26、Summary Writing

Over the past few decades, more and more countries have opened up the markets, increasingly transforming the world economy into one free-flowing global market. The question is:is economic globalization good for all?

Those who advocated globalization claim that economies in developing countries will benefit from new opportunities for small and home-based businesses. For example, small farmers in Brazil who produce nuts that would originally have sold only in local open-air markets can now promote their goods worldwide by the Internet. According to the World Bank, one of its chief supporters, economic globalization has helped reduce poverty in a large number of developing countries. Home to some three billion people, these twenty- four countries have seen incomes increase at an average rate of five percent compared to two percent in developed countries.

Critics take a different view, believing that economic globalization is actually widening the gap between the rich and poor. A study carried out by the U.N.-sponsored World Commission on the Social Dimension of Globalization shows that only a few developing countries have actually profited from integration into the world economy and that the poor, the uneducated, unskilled workers, and native peoples have been left behind. Moreover, they maintain that globalization may eventually threaten emerging businesses. For example, Indian craftsmen who currently seem to benefit from globalization because they are able to export their products may soon face fierce competition that could put them out of business. When large-scale manufacturers start to produce the same goods, or when superstores like Wal-Mart move in, these small businesses will not be able to keep up and will be crowded out.

One thing is certain about globalization--- there is no turning back. Advances in technology combined with more open policies have already created an interconnected world. The challenge now is finding a way to create a kind of globalization that works for the benefit of all.
