21、It was an autumn morning shortly after my husband and I moved into our first house. Our children were upstairs unpacking, and I was looking out of the window at my father moving around mysteriously on the front lawn. “What are you doing out there?” I called to him.
He looked up, smiling. “I’m making you a surprise.’’ I thought it could be just about anything. When we were kids, he always created something surprising for us. Today, however, Dad would say no more, and caught up in the business of our new life, I eventually forgot about his surprise.
Until one gloomy day the next March when I glanced out of the window, I saw a dot of blue across the yard. I headed outside for a closer look. They were crocuses (番红花) throughout the front lawn — blue, yellow and my favorite pink, with little faces moving up and down in the cold wind. I remembered the things Dad secretly planted last autumn. He knew how the darkness and dullness of winter always got me down. What could have been more perfectly timely to my needs?
My father’s crocuses bloomed (开花) each spring for the next five seasons, always bringing the same assurance: Hard times are almost over. Hold on, keep going, and light is coming soon.
Then a spring came with only half the usual blooms and the next spring there were none. I missed the crocuses, so I would ask Dad to come over and plant new bulbs (块茎植物). But I never did. He died suddenly one October day. My family were in deep sorrow, leaning on our faith.
On a spring afternoon four years later, I was driving back when I felt depressed. It was Dad’s birthday, and I found myself thinking about him. This was not unusual — my family often talked about him, remembering how he lived up to his faith. Suddenly I slowed as I turned into our driveway. I stopped and stared at the lawn. There on the muddy grass with small piles of melting snow, bravely waving in the wind, was one pink crocus.
How could a flower bloom from a bulb more than 18 years ago, one that hadn’t bloomed in over a decade? But there was the crocus. Tears filled my eyes as I realized its significance.
Hold on, keep going, and light is coming soon. The pink crocus bloomed for only a day, but it built my faith for a lifetime.

22、 How does running a marathon and burning over 1, 000 calories per hour without even getting off your sofa completely sound? That's exactly what BionicGym, an advanced wearable neuro-stimulator (神经刺激器), claims to help you achieve.
Let's be honest, we've all seen similar devices in sci-fi movies or teleshopping advertisements before, but they're really not that effective. However, BionicGym creator Dr Louis Crowe says this product is truly revolutionary.
Crowe says he came up with the idea for this unique neuro-stimulator over 16 years ago, when he would get into the cold Atlantic ocean so he could observe the effects of shivering (颤栗). He discovered that as he got colder he didn't shiver faster, but he shivered at the same rate. He also found that this natural way of burning calories allowed a person to burn a lot of calories without actually doing any exercise.
Crowe did more research on how to use shivering as an effective training and weight-loss tool, and developed BionicGym. He's teamed up with Dr Barry Broderick to bring it to market. To do so, they need some funding to redesign the device. Then it has to be approved by regulators. BionicGym may be ready for sale by November this year. But people seem so impressed by the abilities of BionicGym to give them a workout while resting on a sofa that they seem to have no problem parting with $ 300 for the chance to one day try it out. Crowe's crowdfunding campaign had a goal of $ 20, 000, but with 11 days to go, it's already passed the $ 287. 000 mark.
In a promotional video, Crowe presents a graph showing that used at top levels. BionicGym can burn around 1, 100 calories per hour, and get your heart rate up to around 180 bpm-beats per minute. Crowe warns that using the device at top levels makes for a very tough workout, requiring previous training. Beginners or older people can use it at lower levels and make their way up to the tougher programs.

【4】What can be inferred about BionicGym from the last paragraph?
A.It especially appeals to old people.

23、The Tomatina Festival(西红柿节) is a festival that is held in a town named Bunol in Spain, on which people throw tomatoes for fun. It is held on the last Wednesday of August each year.
In 1945, during a parade(游行) in the town one day, young men who wanted to be in the parade started a fight in the town square. They used tomatoes as weapons(武器).This is the most popular story about how the Tomatina Festival started.
At around 10: 00a.m.on Wednesday, activities that are organized to celebrate the festival begin. The first one is climbing a pole with a ham on top. When a person is climbing, some people sing and dance. When the person drops the ham off the pole, the tomato fight starts. The tomatoes come from Extremadura. The tomatoes there are less expensive and are grown specially for the festival. The number of tomatoes used is about 150, 000. After exactly one hour, the fight ends. The whole square becomes red because there is tomato juice everywhere. Then hoses are used to clean the square and to wash away the tomato juice on people’s bodies. After that, the town goes back to the way it was.
The local government has made some rules for the safety of people. One of them is as follows: People have to squash(把……挤软) the tomatoes before throwing in order not to hurt other people.

Luosifen, or river snail rice noodles, is a dish known for its special smell in the southern Chinese city of Liuzhou. Combining the traditional food of the Han people with that of the Miao and Dong ethnic (民族的) groups, luosifen is sour, spicy, salty, hot and even smelly after being boiled.
Originating in Liuzhou in the 1970s, luosifen served as an inexpensive street snack that people outside of the city knew little about. In 2012, luosifen appeared in a hit Chinese food TV program, A Bite of China. After that, it became a household name.

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
We went to New York a few years ago and I had a wonderful time living there. I made many good friends both in the neighbourhood and at school. Then one night, Dad told me, "We're moving back to L.A. You'll go first, and then your mom and I will follow."
It was hard for me to adapt to the new school. I didn't like this school, a high school with some strange rules that I had never heard of. I had no friends there and struggled a lot with study. Besides, I disliked living in the house of my aunt. Luckily, my parents returned and we moved into a small apartment.
However, living with them didn't make my school life much better. They were busy unpacking and managing to adapt to the new environment and their work. They even didn't know what I was experiencing at school, I felt lonely and helpless. "Come on, darling. This move has been difficult for all of us." Mom encouraged me. However, her words didn't help at all.
Then one Friday night, my mom said to me delightedly, "I'm taking you to your grandma's house tomorrow. She has said you're welcome to spend this weekend with her. "But I wasn't happy about this idea. I had never seen my grandma since I was 5. What was I going to do there with her? The next morning, my mom drove me to my grandma's house in the country.
On the long ride, my mom kept reminding me to help grandma do housework and listen to her suggestions. But I just thought, "Grandma isn't anything like me. She can't possibly understand what I am going through. What good suggestions or encouragement can she offer?"
After arriving, my mom left for work. "Hi, Barbie," Grandma said excitedly." Come in. I've got many fun things planned." I just entered the room and said all I wanted was to watch TV.
