22、Failing in something isn’t a really nice feeling, but Scotland’ s Fettes College in Edinburgh wants to show its students that failure isn’t something to fear and is actually something to accept willingly!

The boarding school held “failure week” to celebrate taking risks and learning from them. Whether in sports or school, children often face lots of pressure to succeed and do well, and the school was becoming concerned.

“Young people from all walks of life live in a high-pressure environment where they are trying very hard to achieve a level of perfection,” said Sue Bruce, head of personal and social education in the school.

“This week at Fettes we have been focusing on one of the most misunderstood parts of success: failure. While we are often scared of failure, it is important to learn that it is only through failing, often many times, that we learn how to succeed. All through the week, we have looked at the experiences of some of the most successful inventors, artists and businessmen, who failed hundreds, if not thousands of times on their journey to success,” read a letter on Fettes College’s website.

To celebrate failure, students were encouraged to try something they’ve never done before, like playing an instrument or dancing in front of audiences. A number of students stepped up and tried things that they finally failed in, but they had fun and enjoyed the experience. “The concert was extremely enjoyable, proving that we should always try not to worry about failure and have a go!” read another note on the website. Students were also taught about famous people like J.K. Rowling and Richard Branson who failed many times before they finished what they set out to do.

“If they let the fear of failure stop them from doing something, they are actually stopping themselves from learning, developing, and potentially succeeding,”said Bruce.

23、When Sarah Harmeyer moved to Dallas before the pandemic, she didn’t know any of her neighbors. So she decided to invite them all to dinner — and was thrilled when 91 people showed up in her backyard.

While COVID-19 has changed how neighbors interact, making helpful connections to people and businesses nearby is more important than ever. For Harmeyer, it started with a simple desire to know others in her community. And the free Nextdoor neighborhood networking app made what could seem like an awesome process easy.

“I went to the Nextdoor app and I said, ‘If you’ve never stepped outside of your house to meet your neighbors, would you consider coming? I would love to meet you,’” she said. After she reached out, Harmeyer discovered others wanted to connect just as much as she did, if not more. “Something is extraordinary when we reach out to each other as neighbors,” Harmeyer said.

Since that first request, Harmeyer has now hosted gatherings with more than 3,500 neighbors in total. She’s had people over for dinner, backyard concerts, holiday parties and more. By posting her invitations to Nextdoor, she continues to grow her community. Harmeyer even shares hosting tips and tricks through Nextdoor for others interested in becoming “people-gatherers” like her.

“By the time I left, I felt like I had new friends,” Jennifer Rylander said after attending one of Harmeyer’s backyard gatherings. Neighbor Travis Brannon added, “It takes a lot of courage to take that next step and get out and meet someone face-to-face.”

Harmeyer’s story shows how one person has the power to strengthen their entire neighborhood. Technology like Nextdoor can be used to promote real — world interactions — and, in return, these gatherings can spark positive change.

【3】Which word can best describe Harmeyer according to the text?

A.Outgoing.

B.Cautious.

D.Everyone can play a part in strengthening their neighborhood.

24、   I wanted, in 1999, to be a “farmer's wife”. Thankfully, after quick correction by my progressive parents, that gradually turned into “farmer”. But that only lasted until my dad told me I had to put my arms up cows’ backsides. Immediately I rethought my career path. Driving instructor followed, and then somewhere along the way, footballer.

I remember the exact moment when I told my dad I admired my sister, who had trained with Crewe Alexandra Girls for a year or two as a left back. I was watching the game with him and it just came out, “it makes me sad I can't be a footballer.” He asked why not, and I answered, because I'm not a boy and no one watches women’s football.” Looking back I can see exactly why I felt like that.

At school, there was an unwritten rule that sports like hockey and netball were “girl” sports and rugby and football were for the boys I'd never seen a women's football match on TV; the only female athletes I’d heard of were in the Olympics.

Representation is critical, and although we talk about it a lot, I'm yet to be convinced that those were represented often fully understand what it means to those who aren’t, and how, without really releasing, it affects the decisions that makes and the general trajectory of their life. In the words of Marian Wright-Edelaman, “you can't be what you can't see.” Lack of representation leads, at least, to a misunderstanding around a certain group of people, or at worst, fear and discrimination.

When I look back at the conversation with my father, I often wonder what paths I would have taken if the option had not seemed so impossible. In June of last year, people across the world watched talented, skillful female footballers play as the Lionesses took on Scotland in the 2019 FIFA World Cup. Among the millions of viewers, perhaps was a little girl believing that she too can be a Lionesses one day.

A.They had no clear rules. B.They were not inclusive.

C.They enjoyed great. Popularity. D.They were impacted by the Olympics.

3Why did the author quote Marian Wright-Edelman?

A.To show pity for Marian’s being discriminated.

B.To describe the general trajectory of Marian's life.

C.To stress what lack of representation can lead to.

D.To explain how the misunderstanding is caused.

4What can we infer from the last paragraph?

A.The author has been part of the Lionesses. B.The Lionesses is a female team without equal.
