22、When it's five o'clock, people leave their office. The length of the workday, for many workers, it defined by time. They leave when the clocks tells them they’re done.

These days, the time is everywhere: not just on clocks or watches, but on cellphones and computers. That may be a bad thing, particularly at work. New research shows that clock based work schedules hinder creativity.

Clock-timers organize their day by blocks of minutes and hours. For example: a meeting from 9 a. m. to 10 a. m, research from 10 a. m to noon, etc. On the other hand, task-timers have a list of things they want to accomplish. They work down the list, each task starts when the previous task is completed. It is said that all of us employ a mix of both these types of planning.

What, then, are the effects of thinking about time in these different ways? Does one make us more productive? Better at the tasks at hand? Happier? In experiments conducted by Tamar Avnet and Anne-Laure Sellier, they had participants organize different activities from project planning, holiday shopping, to yoga-by time or to-do list to measure how they performed under “ clock time” vs “ task time”. They found clock timers to be more efficient(有效率的) but less happy because they felt little control over their lives. Task timers are happier and more creative, but less productive. They tend to enjoy the moment when something good is happening, and seize opportunities that come up.

The researchers argue that task-based organizing tends to be undervalued and under-supported in the business culture. This might be a small change to the way we view work and the office, but the researchers argue that it challenges a widespread characteristic of the economy; work organized by clock time. While most people will still probably need, and be, to some extent, clock-timers, task-based timing should be used when performing a job that requires more creativity. It’ll make those tasks easier, and the task-doers will be happier.

1What does the author say a clock-based work?

A. It makes workers very tired.

B. It reminds workers to leave on time.

C. It makes workers aware of the precious time.

D. It may have a bad effect on the creativity.

2What does the underlined word “hinder” in paragraph 2 mean?

A. Block.

B. Consider.

C. Increase.

D. Value.

3What did Tamar Avnet and Anne-Laure Sellier find in their experiments about clock-timers?

A. They seize opportunities as they come up.

B. They always get their work done in time.

C. They tend to be more productive.

D. They can control their lives.

4What do the researchers suggest?

A. Task-based timing is preferred for doing creative work.

B. It is important to keep a balance between work and life.

C. Performing creative jobs tends to make workers happier.

D. A scientific standard should be adopted in job evaluation.

23、It was an oral English class and in front of us was standing our teacher Lila Betray, who was a university student from the US. Somehow we came to the point whether any of us could sing an English pop song in front of the class. You know, maybe three or more out of ten Chinese students are shy in class. As a result, there was silence in class for quite a while, which made everybody feel rather embarrassed (尴尬的), including the teacher.

I was a shy boy. However, just at that moment, a great idea struck me suddenly. “Seize the enjoyment! Seize the chance. Yes, there couldn’t be a better chance.” I said to myself. “Why not seize it? Why should I have always to be the guy regretting missing the opportunity just because of shyness? Yes, maybe I should have a try!”

So, I raised my hand. And I remember that it took me quite a while to think what the song’s name was. Though I sang no more than five sentences because of forgetting the lyrics (歌词), their clapping hands told me that I did the job well. Later, I got a gift and I was really happy.

I think that is one of the most unforgettable moments in my life. Through this experience, I’ve also got to know that we should believe that we can do the job well, no matter how difficult it seems for us. Just have a little more courage.

1The passage mainly tells us about   .

A. an English pop song

B. the author’s shy classmates

C. the author’s English teacher

D. the author’s unforgettable experience

2Which word can best describe the author?

A. Clever.   B. Brave.

C. Kind.   D. Hard-working.

3What can we learn from the passage?

A. All of the Chinese students are shy in class.

B. The author sang well in front of his teacher and classmates.

C. The author was not good at singing.

D. The author was too shy to sing the song.

24、People who consume a diet including flavanol (黄烷醇)-rich in foods and drinks, including tea, fruits like apples and berries, could lead to lower blood pressure, according to the first study using objective measures of thousands of UK residents’ diet.

The findings, published in Scientific Reports, studied the diet of more than 25,000 people in Norfolk, UK and compared what they ate with their blood pressure. In contrast to most other studies investigating links between nutrition and health, the researchers did not rely on study participants reporting their diet, but instead measured flavanol intake objectively using nutritional biomarkers-indicators of dietary intake, metabolism or nutritional status that are present in our blood.

The difference in blood pressure between those with the lowest 10% of flavanol intake and those with the highest 10% of intake was between 2 and 4 mmHg. This is comparable to meaningful changes in blood pressure observed in those following a Mediterranean diet or Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet. Notably, the effect was more conspicuous in participants with high blood pressure.

This research confirms the results from previous dietary intervention studies and shows that the same results can be achieved with a habitual diet rich in flavanols. In the British diet, the main sources are tea, cocoa, apples and berries.

Professor Gunter Kuhnle, a nutritionist at the University of Reading who led the study, said, “We are delighted to see that in our study, there is a meaningful and significant association between flavanol consumption and lower blood pressure.”

“This study adds key insights to a growing body of evidence supporting the benefits of dietary flavanols in health and nutrition. This suggests if the general public increased its flavanol intake, there could be an overall reduction in cardiovascular (心血管的) disease incidence,” Gunter added.

【1】In which aspect is the study different from most other similar studies?

A.Research method.

B.Research object.

C.Research institution.

D.Research result.

【2】What does the underlined word “conspicuous” in paragraph 3 mean?

A.Constant.

B.Obvious.

C.Awkward.

D.Curious.

【3】What may Gunter advise people to do to reduce cardiovascular disease incidence?

A.Adopt a healthy diet.

B.Change lifestyle.

C.Increase flavanol intake.

D.Consume less salt and fat.

【4】What can be a suitable title for the text?

A.Fruits like apples and berries are rich in flavonol

B.Measuring nutritional biomarkers is more objective

C.New study confirms the results of dietary intervention

D.High flavanol diet may lead to lower blood pressure
