21、A controlled fishing system in Brazil’s Amazon River area is helping to save an endangered fish. The fish is the pirarucú . It is also known in Brazil as arapaima. The pirarucú is believed to be the largest of 2, 300 different kinds of fish known to live in the Amazon Basin. It can grow to be three meters long and weigh up to 200 kilograms.
The fish mostly live in lakes across large areas of the Brazilian Amazon. They are carnivores , meaning they feed on other fish.
The pirarucú is considered endangered because of overfishing. illegal fishing activities left many communities struggling to find the fish, which traditionally is an important food. In recent years, however, illegal fishing of the pirarucú has been sharply reduced. And the fish has increasingly been recovering. The improvements came after efforts that included close cooperation between communities.
One of the unusual things about the pirarucú is that they need to breathe air to survive. The fish need to take at least one breath every 20 minutes. They rise to the surface to do so. This behavior by the fish makes it easier to tell how many pirarucús are active in an area. A count of the fish is now carried out once a year by fishermen trained to use the method. By law, only 30 percent of the pirarucú in a certain area can be fished the following year.
Pirarucú fishing is now done once a year, around September, the period when water levels are lowest.
Efforts have led to increases in the pirarucú population in some areas. In the Sao Raimundo area, there were 1, 335 pirarucús in nearby lakes in 2011, when controlled fishing began. Last year, records showed there were 4, 092. In the Carauari area, the number of the pirarucú rose from 4, 916 to 46, 839 between 2011 and 2021.

22、The area of tropical forest destroyed in 2021 was enough to cover the entire island of Cuba, and sent more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere as India does in an entire year from burning fossil fuels, according to an analysis published on Thursday.
Some 11.1 million hectares (around 43, 000 square miles) of forest was destroyed, mainly by logging (伐木)as well as fires, the analysis by the World Resources Institute’s Global Forest Watch and the University of Maryland found. Some of those fires were deliberately lit to clear land and many were deteriorated by climate change.
The loss was less severe than in 2020, but deforestation (毁林)is still occurring at an alarming rate in the tropics. Of the area lost, 3. 75 million hectares were primary tropical forest at the equivalent of 10 soccer fields every minute, WRI reported.
Primary tropical forests in particular are crucial for the ecological balance of the planet, providing oxygen that supports life and as biodiversity hotspots. They are also rich in stored carbon, and when these forests are logged or burned, they release carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, contributing to global warming.
“What’s important to understand is that forests, especially tropical forests, are part of the global climate system,” WRI senior fellow Frances Seymour told CNN. “So they’re not mechanical carbon storage devices. They actually influence the energy transfer and the moisture content of the atmosphere in ways that affect rainfall and global circulation patterns.”
“When deforestation happens, when forests are lost, it not only contributes carbon to the atmosphere, but also disrupts rainfall patterns and increases local temperatures in some ways. For example, it makes remaining forests more vulnerable to fire, and the warmer, drier conditions that come with climate change,” Seymour said.

23、Travel can be fun, but when you have to move in a disability, getting from point A to point B can become frustrating. Airlines know this and do their part to make air travel as comfortable as they can for every passenger.
Here are some tips and information on what major airlines do for travelers who need extra support when flying.
United
When flying with United, call the airline’s disability desk (1-800-228-2744) 48 hours in advance of travel if you’ll be traveling with an auxiliary (辅助的) device so they can ensure your device can be used in-flight. Any special needs you have should be mentioned when you make your reservation so the airline staff can do their best to help you. This includes the need for assistance getting to your gate, boarding, getting to your seat, deplaning or connecting.
Delta
Depending on the type and age of the aircraft, accessible features of Delta’s aircraft include movable armrests of seats, wheelchair space, on-board wheelchairs and, on larger airplanes, wheelchair-accessible washrooms. Depending on the aircraft, they also provide seats with a movable aisle armrest for passengers needing to transfer from a boarding wheelchair to their own seat more easily.
US Airways
When traveling with US Airways, if you have a mobility disability and need special seating, call 800428-4322 at least 24 hours in advance to ensure your needs are met. Besides seats with movable armrests, the airline also provides seats with more legroom for passengers with an immobilized leg. The airline can also provide an on-board wheelchair but let them know 48 hours in advance if you need one.
Southwest
If you’re flying with Southwest and you need a wheelchair at the airport, or need other special assistance, if s best to inform the airline in advance, or as soon as you arrive at the airport so your requests can be fulfilled as quickly as possible. On each aircraft, a small wheelchair that can fit down the aircraft aisle is available at every gate and can be used if you need help getting into your seat.

24、Have you ever suddenly developed an appetite from a passing glance at a freeway billboard featuring a brightly colored cheeseburger, or decided to step into a candy or ice cream store displaying a window full of lively shades and hues (色调)of sweet treats? If so, you are in good company. Unless we are medically restricted or strictly dieting, we are not likely to resist inviting fare simply because we recognize the lack of nutritional value.
Devina Wadhera and Elizabeth D.Capaldi-Phillips in A Review of Visual Cues Associated with Food recognize the impact of sensory cues (信号)on food consumption and enjoyment, and the potential they have to promote healthy eating behavior. They cite previous research in providing some interesting examples of the visual impact of different color schemes (方案)on taste and food enjoyment. They note that pink food on a white plate was considered sweeter and more flavorful than the same food on a black plate. Apparently, we consume with more of our senses than we realize. So given the rainbow of colors around us when faced with so many appealing food choices, is there any way to control our appetite? Thankfully, some research says yes.
Oliver Genschow demonstrated that when it comes to eating less colors impact consumption. They specifically researched the effect of the color red. They found that people ate fewer pretzels when using a red plate, as opposed to white or blue, and drank less from a red cup than a blue cup. They suggest that the color red reduces food and drink intake by functioning as a stop signal.
But when it comes to healthy eating, instead of putting on a pair of sunglasses to block the inviting hues of food cues, consider the value of discipline. Healthy eating involves intentional choices, not mindless responses to sensory cues. And before you invest in many red tableware to slim down, remember that what goes onto those plates is much more important.
