二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、In the winter months the temperature in most of Canada usually stays below 0℃. However, in some parts of Canada, such as southern British Columbia, the temperature rarely goes below 0℃. In most areas where people live, snow will be on the ground from mid-December to the middle of March. Though Canada’s winter may be much colder and longer than you are used to, it can be very enjoyable. For many Canadians, being active in winter is an important part of enjoying life. There are many outdoor winter activities, including skiing, ice fishing, walking, and skating. Joining in one of these activities may help you appreciate winter and enjoy your time outside in the snow.

Dressing for winter.

During winter in Canada, you will need warm clothing. If possible, arrive with these items or be prepared to buy them soon after your arrival. You will need:

   *A warm waterproof (防水) boots.

*A scarf (围巾) for your neck.

*A hat that covers your ears.

   *Gloves for your hands.

*Thick winter coats, pants (裤子) and sweaters.

Layers (层) keep you warm.

It’s a good idea to layer your clothing by, for example, wearing a T-shirt and a sweater underneath a jacket. If you become too hot, it is always easier to remove a piece of clothing than to add another. On the West Coast, prepare to dress for cool rainy or snowy weather. You will need:

   *A warm waterproof coat.

   *Waterproof hats.

   *An umbrella.

   *Rain boots or snow boots.

Learn more about weather and seasons across Canada. You can also contact (联系) Related Links.com, for example, an immigrant-serving (移民服务) organization in the community where you live for more information about dressing for winter.

22、   White chocolate, German chocolate, ice cream: There are hundreds of types of birthday cake in the world, each beautiful in its own sugary way. You are likely to enjoy one during at least one (hopefully all) of your birthday parties. But in between delicious bites of cake, have you ever stopped and wondered, “Why am I eating this? What makes this dessert fit to celebrate the day of my birth?”

It’s because you are as important and beloved as the gods. Kind of.

The ancient Egyptians are thought to have “invented” the celebration of birthdays. They believed when pharaohs (法老) were crowned, they became gods, so their coronation (加冕) day was a pretty big deal. That was their “birth” as a god.

Ancient Greeks borrowed the tradition, but realized that a dessert would make the celebration all the more meaningful. So they baked moon-shaped cakes to offer up to Artemis, goddess of the moon. They decorated them with lighted candles to make the cakes shine like the moon. Hence, it is the reason why we light our birthday cakes on fire.

Modern birthday parties are said to get their roots from the 18th century German celebration “Kinderfeste”. On the morning of a child’s birthday, he or she would receive a cake with lighted candles that added up to the kid’s age, plus one. This extra candle was called the “light of life,” representing the hope of another full year lived.

And then, torture — because no one could eat the cake until after dinner. The family replaced the candles as they burned out throughout the day. Finally, when the moment came, the birthday child would make a wish, try to blow out all the candles in one breath, and dig in. Like modern tradition, the birthday girl or boy wouldn’t tell anyone the wish so it would come true.

Since the ingredients (原料) to make cakes were pretty expensive, this birthday custom didn’t become popular until the Industrial Revolution. More ingredients were available, which made them cheaper, and bakeries even started selling pre-baked cakes.

1What is the passage mainly about?

A.The origin of birthday cakes. B.The significance of birthday cakes.

C.The history of birthday parties. D.The introduction of cake production.

2Who established the tradition of celebrating birthdays with cakes according to the passage?

A.Germans. B.Pharaohs.

C.Ancient Greeks. D.Ancient Egyptians.

3The underlined word “torture” in Paragraph 6 is closest in meaning to ________.

A.pleasure B.replacement

C.sharing D.suffering

4Why was the birthday cake custom unpopular before the Industrial Revolution?

A.The transport was inconvenient.

B.The ingredients of cakes were expensive.

C.The cake could not be eaten before dinner.

D.The bakeries would not sell pre-baked cakes.

23、A black hole is created when a large star burns out. Like our sun, stars are unbelievably hot furnaces(熔炉) that burn their own matter as fuel. When most of the fuel is used up, the star begins to die.

The death of a star is not a quiet event. First there is a huge explosion. As its outer layer is blasted off into space, the dying star shines as brightly as a billion suns.

After the explosion, gravity pulls in what's left of the star. As the outside of the star sinks toward the center, the star gets smaller and smaller. The material the star is made of becomes tightly packed together. A star is so solid that a teaspoon of matter from it weighs billion of pounds.

The more the star shrinks(收缩), the stronger the gravity inside it becomes. Soon the star is very tiny, and the gravity pulling it in is unbelievably strong. In fact, the gravity is so strong that it even pulls light into the star! Since all the light is pulled in, none can go out. The star becomes black when there is no light. Then a black hole is born!

That's what we know about black holes. What we don't know is this: What happens inside a black hole after the star has been squeezed into a tiny ball? Does it keep getting smaller and smaller forever? Such a possibility is hard to imagine.

But if the black hole doesn't keep shrinking, what happens to it? Some scientists think black holes are like doorways to another world. They say that as the star disappears from our universe, it goes into another universe. In other words a black hole in our universe could turn into a "white hole" in a different universe. As the black hole swallows(吞噬) light, the white hole shines brightly--somewhere else. But where? A different place, perhaps, or a different time--many years in the past or future.

Could you travel through a black hole? Right now, no. Nothing we know of could go into a black hole without being crushed(挤压). So far the time being, black hole must remain a mystery.

Black holes are a mystery--but that hasn't stopped scientists from dreaming about them. One scientist suggested that in the future we might make use of the power of black holes. They would supply all of Earth's energy needs, with plenty to spare. Another scientist wondered if a black hole could some day be used to swallow earthly waste--a sort of huge waste disposal(处理) in the sky!

B. The light can't go out of the star.

C. The star becomes smaller and smaller

D. The gravity inside the star is very strong.

3The black hole ______.

24、(题文)Scientists have long had it in their mind to make a robot lizard (蜥蜴). They began with finding out why a lizard can hang on a wall. They noticed the lizard’s toes were unique: they have suckers (吸盘), which enable it to hang on walls. They, therefore, made a robot with suckers on its hands and feet.

The robot could hang on the wall but fell off when climbing. So, they went on researching. 6 years ago, scientists discovered that suckers only were not enough. It is the bristles (刚毛) on each foot that adds friction (摩擦) and static adsorption (静电吸附力) that makes a lizard move on the smooth wall easily without falling down.

Then scientists made great efforts to fix thick bristles to the robot’s hands and feet. However, the effect was not satisfactory. The robot still couldn’t attach itself firmly to the wall.

Scientists got puzzled: how on earth can the lizard climb on an extremely smooth wall or even on a ceiling without dropping off?

An accidental finding inspired them. One day a scientist happened to see a cat attack a lizard and bite off its tail. The lizard broke away from the cat’s teeth and threw itself on a wall to escape, only to fall off heavily on the ground. The scientist wondered: is it the tail that plays an important role in its travelling on the wall? He caught some lizards for an experiment. The result proved his assumption: a tailless lizard has no trouble walking on an ordinary wall but can’t on a smooth one. A further study showed the lizard’s tail can prevent it falling over backward and, what’s more, that the tail acts as an additional leg while one of the lizard’s legs leaves the wall, which is always the case while it is walking on the wall.

Thus, Tailbot, a super tailed robot, is born.
