21、A medical study has shown that excess (过度的) coffee drinking could cause heart attacks in people who do not metabolize (使新陈代谢) caffeine fast enough.

The study, published recently in the Journal of the American Medical Association, says an enzyme (酶) that metabolizes caffeine in the liver works differently in some people, depending on the makeup of the gene (基因). People who have a slow version (版本) of the enzyme are at a greater risk (风险) of a heart attack when they drink more coffee. The risk had something to do with a person’s age and how many cups of coffee he drinks.

The team from the University of Toronto in Canada studied 4,024 people living in coffeerich Costa Rica between 1994 and 2004, of whom half suffered nonfatal (非致命的) heart attacks. They found slightly more than half had the slow version of the gene, while the rest had the fast form.

Two to three cups of coffee a day increased the possibilities of a heart attack by 36 percent for those with the slowacting gene and four or more cups a day lifted it by 64 percent.

But those under 50 who had the fast version of the gene had a lower risk of heart disease, even with four or more cups a day.

Those with the fastacting gene who drank two to three cups of coffee a day had 22 percent reduced possibilities of having a heart attack, but drinking four or more cups a day only lessened the risk by 1 percent. Scientists recommend limiting coffee consumption (消耗量) to within four cups a day.

【3】It can be concluded that the passage is most probably written for________

A.doctors who study heart disease

22、   Are the Olympic Games outdated? That might seem like a strange question to ask. But it’s exactly what the International Olympic Committee (IOC) is doing. At the 2012 London Olympics, IOC President Thomas Bach noticed something. “You could see that the younger generation had no interest in the Games anymore. They were not there.”

In response, the IOC wants to make the Summer Olympics more youthful. But that isn’t as simple as just adding more sports. The Olympic program can’t continue to grow bigger: it would become too much for host cities to handle. For now, permanently adding new sports to the Olympics is out of the question.

The IOC’s solution is to continue to vote on the new program’s line-up and give host cities the opinion to add extra sports. The extra events would be included in that year’s Olympics only. This policy takes effect at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. Skateboarding, sport climbing, surfing and 3x3 baseball are all making their Olympic debuts(首次露面)there.

Adding new sports, though, has sparked a lot of debate. Some sports have been pushing to be included in the Olympics for years but still haven’t made it. Meanwhile, newer sports like skateboarding or surfing are already getting the opportunity.

People are also wondering what makes up an Olympic sport. Paris, the future host of the 2024 Summer Olympics, has expressed interest in adding break-dancing. Some people would like to see e-sports at the Olympics. E-sports are especially important to consider because they are spreading like wildfire. President Bach stated video games with killing are not acceptable. One of the main principles of the Olympics is to encourage peace. At the moment, the future of e-sports is still uncertain.

What about the Winter Olympics? Not to worry, the IOC has already announced seven new events for the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. But the Winter Olympics situation is a little different. The Winter Olympics have less than half the sports of the Summer Olympics, so they have room to grow.

1Why does the IOC want to make the Summer Olympics more youthful?

A.Because the Olympic Games are outdated.

B.Because there is too much for host cities to handle.

C.Because the spirit of the Olympics has got lost over time.

D.Because the IOC wants to get the younger generation interested.

2Which event may first appear in the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo?

A.Baseball. B.Surfing.

C.Speed skating. D.Break-dancing.

3What is President Bach’s attitude to adding e-sports to the Olympic Games?

A.Cautious. B.Supportive.

C.Curious. D.Indifferent.

4It can be inferred from the text that ________.

A.every country has the chance to add extra sports

B.newly-added sports will be in the Olympics forever

C.newer sports are more competitive than some traditional sports

D.there is greater possibility of adding more sports to the Winter Olympics

24、Who do you count as your friends? From our BFF (best friend forever ) to a work mate, it’s good to have someone to chat with or offer comfort and support. 【1】

The recent separation we have had due to the corona-virus pandemic or covid-19 has made some of us question our friendships. We’ve fallen out of touch with friends and acquaintances, 【2】but do we actually have to arouse every relationship we once had? It might be time to take stock and think about who you kept in touch with, who you missed talking to, and who you didn’t. In short, maybe it's time to reset your list of real mates.

【3】 Writing for BBC Worklife, Bryan Lufkin says: “While people have known for years that friendships are unquestionably good for your health, experts say it’s only natural for acquaintances and even friends to fall by the wayside as time goes on—and it’s nothing to feel guilty about. ”

Of course, it can be hard to choose who’s in your friendship circle. This is what Suzanne Degges-White, professor of counselling at Northern Illinois University, calls our ‘friendscape’. She says, “in life, as we go through certain stages and ages, our attention shifts, and we want to be around people who are like us. ”

【4】 but we still need those special pals who’ve known us long term. These are friendships we invest time in. According to Robin Dunbar, a professor of evolutionary psychology at the University of Oxford, these are your inner circle of friends-your “shoulders to cry on” --【5】He adds that the friends that move away are mostly “friendships of convenience”. B.So, changing friends is normal,

C.Friendship is good for your health,

D.There's no obligation (责任) to stay friends.

E.It is important to share with your friends.
