二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、   Scientists are trying to save Puerto Rico’s endangered Amazon parrots after Hurricane Maria destroyed the birds’ habitats and food sources(来源).

El Yunque is a large national forest on the eastern part of Puerto Rico. Just two of the 56 wild parrots that once lived there survived Maria, the Category-4 storm that struck Puerto Rico in September 2017. Scientists report other forests have seen great drops in parrot populations as well.

In the 1800s, there were more than a million of the bright green parrots living in the wild in Puerto Rico. By the 1970s, the number was down to just 13 birds after years of forest clearing.

A special program was started in 1972 to help increase the parrot population, which led to the creation of three breeding(繁殖) centers. Just weeks before Hurricane Maria hit, scientists counted 56 wild parrots at El Yunque. That was the highest number in the program’s history. Scientists say that even though several parrots have been born in captivity(笼养) and in the wild since Maria, the species is still in danger.

The Puerto Rican Amazon is the island’s only remaining native parrot. More than 460 of the birds are kept inside the breeding centers at El Yunque and the Rio Abajo forest. Scientists have not released(释放) any of the birds since Hurricane Maria. A third breeding center, in a forest in the western area of Maricao, has not been in operation since the storm.

Scientists are considering whether to catch some of the remaining wild parrots and put them in the same cage as the birds that are set to be released. This way, the captive birds can learn from the wild birds how to survive in the forests. Another consideration is to release some captive parrots in Maricao, which was not as heavily damaged by Maria.

1Why has the parrot population greatly decreased in the past 200 years?

A. Because of Hurricane Maria.

B. Because of too much hunting.

C. Because of the loss of forests.

D. Because of lack of breeding centers.

2Which of the following is true about Hurricane Maria?

A. It killed 56 wild parrots at El Yunque.

B. It greatly affected parrots in captivity.

C. It reduced the number of wild parrots.

D. It led to the creation of three breeding centers.

3What can we infer about Amazon parrots in captivity?

A. They have the highest number in the history.

B. They have been released since Hurricane Maria.

C. They are used to living in the wild.

D. They are larger in number than those in the wild.

4What is the best title for the text?

A. Scientists Work to Save Puerto Rican Parrots.

B. Amazon Parrots are in Danger of Disappearing.

C. A Special Program Helps Increase the Parrot Population.

D. Hurricane Maria Reduced the Number of Amazon Parrots.

22、Insurance companies are starting to use smartbox technology, so good drivers can benefit from cheap insurance rates.

The smartbox, similar to a black box for airplanes, records details about how your car is driven, which can result in cheap car insurance for responsible drivers. The device is connected to the electronics in your car and collects a wide criterion of information such as time, speed, braking, cornering, acceleration and location. It’s like having an insurance agent sitting beside you while driving.

The smartbox data is wireless transferred in real time to the insurance company and provides a profile of when, where and how you drive. This profile is then used to compare insurance rates and to reward low-risk driving behavior with cheap insurance rates.

Drivers are high-risk when they drive irresponsibly such as speeding, frequent lane changing, driving in high-risk locations or at high-risk times such as in heavy traffic or late at night.

These new electronic inventions are intended to replace the standard practice of categorizing drivers into group behavior to determine insurance coverage and premium (保费) payments. For example, young drivers are more likely to drive fast, drive at night and use a cell phone while driving. Statistically, young drivers are more likely to cause an accident, so insurance companies charge them higher rates to cover the costs of accident claims. So even if you’re a young, responsible driver, you will pay high insurance rates because of group behavior.

This technology allows you to provide proof that your driving behavior doesn’t fit the pattern of your demographic (统计) group.

All the information collected about your driving can be viewed online — including what you’re doing well and what could be improved. Your insurance premium is then calculated according to your driving profile.

【1】What will a good driver benefit from the smartbox?

A.Fewer traffic accidents.

B.Better traffic order.

C.Lower insurance payment.

D.Less petrol used in driving.

【2】How does the insurance company monitor the driving?

A.By checking the device in the car.

B.By sitting beside the driver.

C.By watching the traffic on the roads.

D.By collecting the driving data online.

【3】What will the use of smartboxes bring about?

A.Better service for cars.

B.Lower prices of petrol.

C.More convenient transport.

D.More reasonable insurance charge.

【4】What can we infer about the smartbox from the text?

A.It requires better driving habits.

B.It saves the drivers a lot of time.

C.It helps the drivers use less energy.

D.It takes the place of the traffic police.

23、A few years ago, Paul Allen, the co-founder of Microsoft, published the results of something called the Great Elephant Census, which counted all the savanna elephants in Africa. What it found rocked the conservation world: In the seven years between 2007 and 2014, Africa’s savanna elephant population decreased by about a third and was on track to disappear completely from some African countries in as few as 10 years.

To change that trend, researchers landed on a technology that is rewriting the rules for everything from our daily appliances to our cars: artificial intelligence. “AI can process huge amounts of information to tell us where the elephants are, how many there are,” said Cornell University researcher Peter Wrege. “And possibly tell us what they are doing.”

There are two kinds of elephants in Africa: savanna elephants, which were counted by Allen’s census, and forest elephants, which the census couldn’t account for because that elephant lives in thick rainforest. In the forest, Wrege says, losing a forest elephant is easy to do. “Sometimes you see them, let’s say, 15 meters away from you and then they move 5 meters into the forest and you can’t see them,” he said. “Somehow they just disappear.”

Wrege’s use of artificial intelligence in the rainforest has been less remarkable, but no less important. The networks on which his forest elephant count depends are still training, so he doesn’t have a precise forest elephant count yet. He has found that trying to count forest elephants depends on various factors. But the AI has uncovered some unexpected things. For example, it appears that elephants don’t go to some parts of the forest during specific times of the year. That’s important to know because it can inform the way conservation park managers position their forces. “You can say,” Wrege said. “OK, we know that elephants are not using this huge part of this park for these seven months. No poachers are going to find an elephant anyway. So we don’t need to send any anti-poaching teams there.”

【1】What does the underlined part “that trend” in paragraph 2 refer to?

A.The use of Al in the forest.

B.The dependence on Microsoft.

C.The decrease of elephant population.

D.The progress of the conservation world.

【2】Why is it hard to count forest elephants?

A.The thick forest affects the normal use of AI.

B.It’s easy for them to disappear into the forest.

C.Conservation workers often get lost in the forest.

D.They move to different forests in different seasons.

【3】What can be learned about the AI?

A.It is taken advantage of by poachers.

B.It will be used to count other animals.

C.It has already made some useful discoveries.

D.It can count the exact number of forest animals.

【4】In what way can forest elephants benefit from AI now?

A.They’re safe in all parts of the forest.

B.Poachers can be recognized by networks.

C.Protecting force can be better positioned in the park.

D.Park managers are training them to adapt to new conditions.

24、   Fans of art believe that its main purpose is to make us look at life from many different angles. When it comes to Cubism, however, the artists of this era wanted us to look at life from every angle.

The father of Cubism, Spanish artist Pablo Picasso, is among the art world's most famous names. Like many other great names before him, he felt restrained by the rules of his teachers and decided to do something: break them.

Early in his painting career, Picasso realized something important about how people view and remember scenes of beauty. When we look at a subject, we don’t just see it from one angle, as many paintings appear. Instead, we study the subject from a number of different angles, heights and viewpoints. This is the aim of Cubism: It portrays subjects from a wide range of angles; it doesn’t force us to see things as the artist viewed them at the time he or she painted them. To bring his visions to life, Picasso and other Cubists took the most basic components of a subject and rearranged them in a way which let us see it in full detail.

“By breaking objects and figures down into distinct areas, Picasso aimed to show different viewpoints at the same time and within the same space,” in the words of the Tate Institution. Or as Lithuanian-born Cubist Jacques Lipchitz once put it: “Cubism is like standing at a certain point on a mountain and looking around. If you go higher, things will look different; if you go lower, again they will look different.”

Cubism stood out as it was an art movement which didn't just rely on the artist to share their vision by painting what they saw. As cubist paintings mainly show their subjects in a deconstructed form, this means that viewers must use their imaginations to find the missing pieces for themselves. As Guardian art critic Johnathan Jones noted, this is part of the beauty of enjoying Picasso’s works. “If you can relax your gaze enough and just enjoy the painting long enough, something really amazing happens. Your mind produces a solid feeling of the things Picasso was looking at the world is revealed in its majesty,” he wrote.

1What is a main features of cubist works?

A.They are simple pictures. B.They break things down into parts.

C.They are mainly in black and white. D.They present scenes of life to viewers.

2Why are Jacques Lipchitz’s words quoted?

A.To point out the origin of cubism.

B.To compare cubism with other schools of art.

C.To show his understanding of what cubism was.

D.To show that mountains were a common subject in cubism.

3Which word would Jonathan Jones probably use to describe cubist works?

A.Imaginative. B.Traditional. C.Colorful. D.Life-like.

4Which is the best title for the passage?

As time went by, the little boy grew up and he no longer played around the tree.

One day, the boy came back to the tree, appearing sad. “Come and play with me,” the tree asked the boy gently. “I am no longer a kid; I won’t play around trees anymore,” the boy replied, “I want toys. I need money to buy them.”

“Sorry, but I don't have money. However, you can pick all my apples and sell them. Then, you will have money.” The boy was so excited that he picked all the apples on the tree and left happily. The boy didn't come back after that.

One hot summer day, the boy returned and the tree was delighted. "Come and play with me!” the tree requested. “I am sad and becoming old. I want to go sailing to relax myself.
