21、CAMPUS OR RESORT?
3 Schools with Amazing "Extras”
When you're choosing a college, a lot of factors will probably play into your decision: the school's reputation, the classes offered and the professors in your major, to name a few. A major part of your decision will probably be based on the academic credentials of each college you're considering
However, given the ever-increasing competitiveness of university to attract more and more applicants, many schools now offer extra perks to be enjoyed by all their students. So while the educational aspects of a university remain the most significant factors when you're making your college decision, you can also keep in mind some of the fun "extras” offered by the school
Here are some of the coolest in the country:
1. Michigan Technological University in Houghton, Michigan
An on-campus ski resort
Taking advantage of the cold winter weather. Michigan Technological University sets itself apart with its on-campus ski resort, Mont Ripley, which is accessible and free for all students. Instead of hitting the campus gym, you'll be able to get your exercise outside on the slopes. The resort includes 24 different trails and a tubing park, providing you with many weekends of entertainment.
It's also conveniently located near great restaurants, nightclubs and shopping. Michigan Tech's website boasts the resorts' location in the "snowiest town in the Midwest," allowing you to ski on fresh snow for much of the year. If you're an experienced skier, Mont Ripley is perfect for you, as it's "famous for its challenging terrain."
When the pressures of school become too much, just head out for a day of the free skiing and you'll be left feeling fully refreshed
2. University of Missouri in Columbia, Missouri
One of the best rec centers in the country
When you think of a campus gym, you probably picture a cramped room cluttered with old weights and out-of-date machines. However, at the University of Missouri, you can enjoy one of the best campus recreational centers in the country. It features an "indoor beach" complete with a waterfall and a lazy river, as well as a full-service spa.
According to the website Best College Reviews, which ranked the University of Missouri fourth on its list of "The 25 Most Amazing Campus Student Recreation Centers," Missouri's recreation facilities "resemble a high-end gym more than a traditional campus rec center."
Even if you don't normally enjoy working out, Missouri's recreation center will give you a reason to go to the gym
3. New York University Manhattan, New York
Free museum admission
If you're a fan of museums, NYU is the perfect university for you. Not only will you be located in the heart of a city featuring some of the museums in the world, but the university will provide you with free admission to many of them. 22、On the eastern side of the Arabian Peninsula, the desert turns green as clouds cover it like a blanket. This is the country of Oman’s monsoon (季风) season. The natural event, which is a festival and lasts three months, draws hundreds of thousands of tourists with cool weather and beautiful views. It began on June 21.
A 60-day festival, in Oman’s Dhofar region, draws about 50,000 people every night for dance competitions, and musical performances. In the midst of the clouds, people celebrate Oman’s cultural diversification of Arab, African, and Asian roots.
Officials in Dhofar region started the monsoon festival in 1998. The monsoon festival now draws performers from 40 countries. 60 percent of the visitors come from Oman, while the rest come from nearby countries such as Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain.
Each night, a different Omani city takes the main stage. The port of Sohar did a sea-themed show with cannons (大炮) and a large wooden ship. The next night, a group from Bidbid sang with swords while a musician blew into a goat’s horn. Actually, different groups used the festival to share their world-wide cultures.
The mountains around Salalah, Dhofar’s capital city, trap wetness from the Indian Ocean monsoon. Air pressure pockets above Saudi Arabia and Tibet drive air currents (气流) to Oman. These weather currents create a special environment, which has heavy fogs and green mountains and coasts.
Thomas Wagmann, on holiday from Dubai, noted, “Compared to Dubai, this Dhofar region is just fantastic because you can be outdoors all the time.” He added, “You don’t even have to worry about sunburn because there’s no sun.”

23、With smart technology increasingly influencing all aspects of our lives, it is only a matter of time before someone invents smart shoes-ones that can be made based on personal needs. Called “Shift Wear”, the sneakers are the brainchild of a team of businessmen, and engineers led by New York-based designer David Coelho.
The adaptable shoes can be customized by using a smart phone app. Shoe owners will have the option of selecting a design from a variety of HD patterns by famous artists or creating one themselves. The company’s founders imagine the marketplace where artists can not only share but also sell their designs to others. Despite being electronic, the designs are clearly visible even in the brightest sunlight. What’s even cooler is that by switching on a backlight, users can even show off their designs in the dark!
According to Coelho, the sneakers will keep their charge forever if only images are displayed. Though they will need periodic recharging, active users have nothing to worry about. That’s because the shoes are equipped with special Walk-N-Charge technology that powers the shoes with every step. Inactive users also have options of charging the sneakers without using wires.
The bottom part of the shoes is covered with Kevlar fibers, a kind of strong material, reducing normal wear and tear. Even better, they are completely waterproof and can even be thrown into an ordinary laundry machine for a quick wash! The company predicts that the shoes will range in price from $150 to $1,000 depending on the size of the e-panels (仪表板) where the designs are displayed.
This is not the first time that electronics and shoes have combined. Lithuania-based iShuh Technologies has come up with a similar concept that connects e-reader panels to a smart phone app Via Bluetooth. Whether these smart shoes become as popular as our smart devices remains to be seen, though they surely are attractive.

24、 Japan said Tuesday that it would start pouring treated radioactive water(放射性废水) from the Fukushima nuclear power plant into the Pacific Ocean within two years. Officials in Tokyo said the water would be filtered and diluted(稀释) to safe levels first, but most residents remain firmly opposed to the plan. Protesters gathered outside Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga’s residence in downtown Tokyo to criticize the government’s decision.
More than a million tons of radioactive water is currently being stored at the Fukushima power plant in a massive tank farm big enough to fill 500 Olympic-sized swimming pools. The wastewater comes from water pumped in to cool the plant’s damaged reactors(反应堆). The government says it has simply run out of room to store all the water. The plan to dump the water into the ocean first came to light in the autumn of last year, when Japanese news reported anonymous officials said the decision had been taken.
On Tuesday, Suga said that after years of study, his scientific advisors had concluded that ocean discharge was the most possible way to cope with the wastewater. But the decision to pour Fukushima wastewater into the ocean has drawn fire from neighboring Asian countries and local fishermen along Japan’s coast.
China called the decision “extremely irresponsible,” and South Korea summoned(召唤) the Japanese ambassador in Seoul over the matter. “They told us that they wouldn’t release the water into the sea without the support of fishermen,” Kanji Tachiya, who leads a local cooperative of fisheries in Fukushima, told national broadcaster NHK ahead of the announcement on Tuesday. “We can’t support this move to break that promise and release the water into the sea unilaterally(单方面地).”
The actual release of water from the Fukushima plant will take decades to complete. Critics have called on Japan’s government to at least ensure that independent monitoring is in place to check the level of radiation in the poured water is safe for the environment.

D.The plan has aroused anger in all the Asian countries.
【3】What does Kanji Tachiya probably agree with?
A.The plan is to pull the whole world into the disaster.
B.It’s imperative that the plan should be carried out immediately.
C.It’s safe and easy to pour the wastewater into the ocean.
D.It’s unacceptable to pour the water into the ocean without fishermen’ permission.
