二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、There’s a world of difference between a horror movie and a comedy -- the former scares you half to death while the latter leaves you rolling on the floor laughingly. But try watching them without the background music and you just might decide they’re not so different after all. Music and movies have been closely connected since the beginning of the film industry--even before the voices of actors were recorded. In movies, music helps to provide a sense of time and place, express ideas about the characters and, most importantly, draw emotions out of the audience.

Studies have long shown that our heart rates and anxiety levels rise and fall depending on the speed of the music we hear. Using this knowledge, composers use sudden changes in film music speed to create fear among audiences. Slowing the speed of the music will have the opposite effect, bringing about a sense of peace or a dreamlike quality. The use of dissonant tones and noises is another technique that heightens tension. Humans naturally become anxious when we hear dissonant sounds because such noises are usually combined with danger, like those that animals make to warn against predators(捕食者).

As important as it is, the best film music is subtle. All that audiences are supposed to feel is a heightened sense of emotion--they shouldn’t realize what’s causing it. Only when the music is taken out of the film should audiences understand its effects.

In keeping with this principle, some filmmakers are even using what’s called “infrasound”(次声波) to cause fear. While we may not be able to hear it because its frequency(频率) is below the range of the human ear, infrasound has been proven to cause anxiety, tremble and even sorrow. For example, infrasound was used in the soundtrack of the 2007 horror movie Paranormal Activity, and audiences were at extremely high fear levels despite the lack of action throughout the movie. “It doesn’t affect everyone equally,” said British science writer Philip Ball, author of The Music Instinct, but he predicted that “we will see more of it used in movies in the future.”

23、Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula broke their record for most visitors in a year back in 2019, with over 3.2 million1 visitors. Recently, Mexico’s first long-distance hiking and cycling trail (步道) has been completed here, which will attract tourists from all over the world once more. The tourist attraction and trail, which goes through local cultural relics, will give visitors a wonderful glimpse into the incredible history to Maya’s history.

Considering that most tourists travel to Mexico, particularly Cancun, with the 5-star hotels and perfect beaches, getting them to visit the other history-filled areas isn’t always so easy, unless they happen to be history lovers.

But with the newly constructed Camino del Mayab, tourists can experience the rich Mayan culture, history, food, and civilization. The trail is a 68-mile journey that hopes to aid in bettering the lives of the 14 communities of Mayan descendants (后代) that live along the trail. The journey can take three days to cycle or five days to walk. Those on the journey will begin in the town of Merida, and then head to many abandoned haciendas, which remind you of Mayan labor. Along the trail, visitors can purchase handicrafts and taste the delicious food of the Yucatan and the Maya from local stores and restaurants.

All throughout the trail is also a jungle where various birds and other types of animals are found. The trail ends at the very top of the pyramid of Kulkulkan at Mayapán.

The Yucatan civilization collapsed during the 9th century and its people became slaves in the 15th century. Yet, the locals worked to keep their ancestral homes, animals, cities, foods and culture work for themselves, rather than being overrun by large hotel companies. In this way, the Yucatan civilization managed to remain strong in the region.

And whether you’re a lover of Mexico or not, or possibly one that enjoys these types of camino walks, the Camino del Mayab is definitely worth the time.

A.To advocate donations.

24、Expertise is what separates amateurs from true masters in almost any field. You might wonder whether experts are “born” or “made”. Experts in the field prove that expertise is acquired through dedicated practice, but how exactly do people go about becoming experts?

People who become experts tend to get a body of knowledge that makes them one of the most informed individuals in their field. They also possess the skills that they need to determine when and how to utilize their knowledge. Recently, a popular idea has emerged that the key to becoming an expert is devoting at least 10,000 hours to the study and practice of a subject. In the study, researchers found that the most accomplished violinists at a music academy had spent an average 10,000 hours practicing their instruments. Pop psychology author Malcolm Gladwell coined the phrase “the ten-thousand-hour rule”. Gladwell also suggested tech-entrepreneur Bill Gates had devoted 10,000 hours to practicing programming before he created Microsoft.

Anders Ericsson of the University of Florida, who is a world-renowned expert, has studied experts from all walks of life and pointed out the deficiency of “the ten-thousand-hour rule”. Ericsson believes that what separates amateurs from experts is what is referred to as deliberate practice. Ordinary practice can help people become skilled at a task, but deliberate practice needs to improve other things, such as your current skill level, setting goals, and receiving training and instruction from a qualified teacher.

While Ericsson believes deliberate practice is the key to becoming an expert, not all researchers agree with his conclusion. Some recent studies have found deliberate practice isn’t the only factor that explains the differences between the skilled and the unskilled. While psychologists are not sure exactly which factors might also play a role, personality traits, physical characteristics, and overall intelligence may matter as well.

Practice is essential for developing a skill, but becoming an expert requires constantly challenging yourself to do better, learn more, and acquire new knowledge and skills. Simply practicing the same skills over and over again will make you better in those areas, but it will not lead to true expertise.

【1】What’s the main role of the first paragraph?

A.To lead to the topic.

B.To analyze the popular idea.

C.To describe the background.

D.To introduce a phenomenon.

【2】Gladwell proposed the example of Bill Gates to illustrate ________.

【3】What does the underlined word “deficiency” in Paragraph 3 refer to?

【4】Why do some researchers disagree with Anders Ericsson’s idea?

A.Because his research range is quite limited.

B.Because he ignores some related factors.

C.Because he introduces some conflicting factors.

D.Because his research mistakes some definitions.

【5】What does the last paragraph indicate?

A.People should develop different skills in life.

B.Simply practicing is not enough to attain true expertise.

C.People shouldn’t only focus on challenging themselves.

D.Constantly challenging is essential for learning new knowledge.
