21、Scientists near San Francisco work to identify a type of endangered fish using a tool that was orig-inally made for treating cancer.
Currently, CRISPR is used to change the genetic material in specific cells. By changing the structure of immune cells, it helps recognize and fight cancer. The same technology is now used in a special machine called Sherlock, which, of course, is named after the famous investigator Sherlock Holmes. They do not, however, use Sherlock to change fish cells. Instead, the ocean researchers catch the fish, collect a small amount of mucus and then test the cells to find the genetic makeup of the fish. It can be done in about 30 minutes. In the past, the researchers would have to wait weeks or months to get test results.
The researchers have found that the technology is extremely helpful when looking at different species of Chinook salmons, because they look nearly the same. However, some of them are endangered, and the scientists need to keep track of them.
In the past, the scientists would catch the Chinook salmon and measure them to tell them apart. “It’s not very accurate,” said Andrea Schreier, an associate professor at the U niversity of California in Davis. Now she is working on the salmon. Schreier said when they catch the fish, the Sherlock machine can quickly tell them if they have one of the special salmons. It’s important because it allows the scientists to do things that will help the endangered salmon live longer. For example, they can catch them in lakes far away from the coast and take them by truck to the San Francisco Bay. In the past, the fish might have tried to make it to the Bay by swimming in rivers. However, due to climate change, the river water is sometimes too warm for the fish to make the trip safely.
Schreier said she feels good about the project because she likes being able to assist with conservation. “I really want to work to maintain our ecosystems and our native populations, given the pressures humans place on them through our different activities.”
【1】Which of the following best describes the technology?
A.Efficient.
B.Immature.
C.Inaccurate.
D.Economical.
【2】What do the new technology and the traditional way have in common?

D.They aim at better protecting salmons in San Francisco.
【3】What can be inferred about the Chinook salmons?
A.They will soon die out.
B.They are of the same size.
C.They are now well protected.
D.They are used to cool water.
【4】What do we know about Andrea Schreier from the text?
A.She thinks humans are greatly pressured.
B.She can now spend less time on her work.
C.She is rather devoted to the conservation.
D.She thinks her work is of great importance.
22、 In Sweden, McDonald’s is building “bee hotels” on the back of its roadside billboards(广告牌)to help save the country’s declining bee population. It launched the campaign together with outdoor advertising agency JCDecaux. Six large permanent wooden bee hotels first appeared on the back of a north-facing billboard in Jarfalla in September.
“Without pollination(授粉)from bees, a third of the food we eat would be threatened.” McDonald’s said. But it turns out that at least 30 percent of the country’s wild bee population is endangered. A big problem is that they lack places to live in. Based on data released by Chalmers University of Technology, we know Sweden owns 274 species of bees, of which 37 species are bumblebees, and more than a third are in decline or face the risk of declining unless intervention would be made. Their natural habitats have been damaged by factors including the changes of agricultural activities and increased urbanization. Fortunately, most bees are able to survive in urban habitats, like the bee hotels.
Great efforts have been made by the company. On World Bee Day, May 20, it introduced “the world’s smallest McDonald’s”, Mc Hive, which could function as an actual beehive. Designed by set designer Nicklas Nilsson himself, the creation was sold at auction(拍卖) for $ 10,000 at a charity fundraiser held for Ronald McDonald House Charities.
Beehives can be found on the rooftops of some McDonald’s restaurants in Sweden, too.
This took place in certain areas but is now followed by an increasing number of participants. More McDonald’s restaurants are making an effort to improve the living conditions of wild bees by removing the grass around their restaurants to grow flowers and plants instead.
【1】What does McDonald’s do to help wild bees in Sweden?
A.Plant more trees. B.Put up more billboards.
C.Provide shelters for bees. D.Cooperate with other restaurants.
【2】What do we know from the text?
A.Mc Hive was made on World Bee Day.
B.30% of the bees in Sweden will go extinct.
C.Most McDonald’s restaurants set beehives on their rooftops.
D.Human activities contribute to the decreasing of bee’s population.
【3】How does the author explain the importance of protecting bees?
A.By providing details. B.By giving examples.
C.By presenting results. D.By making comparison.
【4】What can be the best title for the text?
A.Wild Bees in Danger B.McDonald’s Bee Hotels
C.The Loss of Bee’s Habitats D.The Conservation of Wild Bees
23、 It's not an urban legend: crime rates do in fact rise in the summer in the U.S. A study found that, with the exception of robbery and auto theft, rates of all violent and property crimes are higher during the summer than during other months. The study examined data collected during 8 years, which included violent and property crimes that did not result in death, both reported and not reported to the police.
The data show that, though the national crime rate dropped by 70 percent during recent years, seasonal spikes in summer remain. In some cases those spikes are 12 percent higher than rates during seasons in which the lows occur. The phenomenon confuses many criminologist and they wonder why.
Some reason that increased temperatures, which drive many out of doors and leave windows open in their homes, raise the amount of time when homes are left empty. Others point to the effect of students on summer vacation who are otherwise occupied with schooling during other seasons, while some argue that suffering heat-induced discomfort simply makes people more aggressive and likely to act out.
Although these elements possess certain persuasive power, their rationality is called into question when cases in winter are put on the map. Why aren’t the rates in winter falling if heat related factors are to blame for the summer spike? Contrarily, the matter should be viewed from social and economic angles rather than on solar terms.
Numerous studies have shown that rates of criminal behavior among young adults drop when their communities provide them with other ways to spend their time and earn money. This was found to be true in Los Angeles, where gang activity was reduced when community centers for teens were thriving and active. And generally speaking, the connection between economic inequality and crime is robustly documented for the U.S. And why summer sees a worse situation? It’s probably because it’s even harder for youngsters to land jobs that provide for life necessities.
So if officials want to address the summer spike in crime, they may act differently instead of aiming straight at crimes. Simply upgrading security and severely punishing offences almost produce void effects. Instead, be open to various options and they will find that development of job hunting agencies or community professional training centers are accompanying the drop of crime rate without seasonal exceptions. After all, bread always comes first for everyone.
【1】What puzzles scholars studying crimes?
A.The rates of robbery and auto theft are lower than other violent and property crimes in summer.
B.The rates of crimes resulting in death are about the same in all seasons.
C.The crime rates not reported to the police are much higher during summer.
D.Crime rates in summer are higher than those of other seasons.
【2】According to the author, what is the key reason for the seasonal spike of crime rates?
A.Increased temperature left houses easier for attacks.
B.The hot environment makes people more likely to be angered.
C.Youngsters find it hard to release energies at school.
D.People’s economic needs are not satisfied by the society.
【3】What can be done to fight seasonal rise of crimes?
A.Lengthen the school time to hold students in school during summer.
B.Enhance the safety mechanism during the summer
C.Take measures to encourage youth employment.
D.Frighten would-be criminals through harsh punishments.
【4】Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?
A.Solar terms are responsible for the summer crime spike.
B.Crime rates in summer fall by 58 percent in the U.S.
C.LA criminal activities fall because of positive community programs.
D.The crime rates in winter are low due to low mobility in the season.
24、 Scientists, psychologists and English academics at Liverpool University have found that reading the works of the classical writers like Shakespeare and Wordsworth has a great effect on the mind, catches the reader’s attention and triggers moments of self-examination.
Using a special machine, they monitored the brain activity of 30 volunteers as they read works by William Shakespeare, William Wordsworth, T.S. Eliot and others.
In the first part of the research, the brain activity of 30 volunteers was monitored as they read passages from Shakespeare’s plays, including King Lear, Othello, Coriolanus and Macbeth, and again as they read the text rewritten in a simpler form or modern language.
While reading the common texts, normal levels of electrical activity were shown in their brains. When they read the works of Shakespeare, however, the levels of activity jumped because of his use of words which were unfamiliar to them. The result of the test showed that the more challenging passages cause a greater degree of electrical activity in the brain than the common ones.
Scientists went on to study the brain activity as it responded to each word and recorded how it lit up as the readers came across unusual words, surprising phrases or difficult sentences in the classical works. As a result, this lightening up process of the mind lasted longer than that when volunteers read common texts, encouraging further reading.
The research also found that reading poetry especially increases activity in the right hemisphere(半球) of the brain, an area connected with “autobiographical memory”, driving the readers to think carefully about their own experiences based on what they have read. The academics said this meant the classical works of literature are more useful than self-help books.
Philip Davis, an English professor who has worked on the study in the university’s magnetic resonance center, announced this week: “Classical literature acts like a rocket-booster(火箭加速器) to the brain, which provides extra power for the brain. You may never imagine how powerful it is. The research shows such kind of literature can create new thoughts and connections in the young and the old.”
