21、 Lots of students are unsure about a variety of factors when they consider which college might represent a good fit for them, but they believe they know exactly what they want when it comes to college size.
【1】. Here are a few of the less-obvious reasons a smaller school might be a good fit:
1. The professors actually do the teaching. Most small colleges only teach undergraduate degrees.【2】, and more importantly, graduate students won’t be teaching any of your classes.
2. More focused and direct feedback (反馈). You’ve heard the expression “You’re just a number.” Think about the homework and tests that need to be graded in a class with 450 students. 【3】. But at small schools, class sizes are smaller, and professors will have more time to read a student’s work.
3. Research chances. Students at small schools are able to develop relationships with professors more easily, since there is a smaller number of students. 【4】.
4. Less red tape. It’s just easier to get things done at a small school. 【5】, and there are fewer regulations. One of the biggest frustrations (令人沮丧的事物) at large schools is that important classes become full quickly, forcing students to either take them over the summer or stay an extra term.
A.Small colleges may offer more sports activities
B.Professors and administrators have more flexibility
C.That means there aren’t graduate students on campus
D.The size of a school really can change your experience
E.It’s great to see students make a 180-degree turn after they visit some small colleges
F.Teachers there don’t have much time to offer advice on every student’s piece of work
G.Most professors know their students’ names and count on them to take part in their research
22、The question of what children learn, and how they should learn it, is continually being debated and redebated. Nobody dares any longer to defend the old system, the parrot-fashion(way of learning by repeating what others say)of learning lessons, the grammar-with-a-whip(鞭子)system, which was good enough for our grandparents. The theories of modern psychology have stepped in to argue that we must understand the needs of our children. Children are not just small adults; they are children who must be respected as such.
Well, you may say, this is as it should be, and a good idea. But think further. What happens? “Education” becomes the responsibility not of teachers, but of psychologists. What happens then? Teachers worry too much about the psychological implications(暗示) of their lessons, and forget about the subjects themselves. If a child dislikes a lesson, the teacher feels that it is his fault, not the child’s. So teachers worry whether history is “relevant” to modern young children. And do they dare to recount stories about violent battles? Or will this make the children themselves violent? Can they tell their classes about children of different races, or will this encourage racial hatred? Why teach children to write grammatical sentences? Oral expression is better. Sums? Arithmetic? No; real-life mathematical situations are more understandable.
You see, you can go too far. Influenced by educational theorists, who have nothing better to do than write books about their ideas, teachers leave their teaching-training colleges filled with grand, psychological ideas about children and their needs. They make complicated preparations and try out their “modern methods” on the long-suffering children. Since one “modern method” rapidly replaces another, the poor kids will have well been fed up by the time they leave school. Frequently the modern methods are so complicated that they fail to be understood by the teachers, let alone the children; even more often, the relaxed discipline so necessary for the “informal” feeling the class must have, prevents all but a handful of children from learning anything.
【1】Under the old system, children were .
A. made to learn passively
B. spoiled by their parents
C. treated as adults
D. were forced to become parrots
【2】Modern psychologists hold the view that .
A. children must be understood and respected
B. children are small adults and they know what they need
C. children are better off without learning lessons
D. education of children is the responsibility of psychologists
【3】What happens when teachers pay too much attention to the psychological implications during a lesson?
A. They find that children dislike the lessons.
B. They tend to blame students for their failure in teaching.
C. They don’t pay enough attention to students’ actual lessons.
D. They no longer want to teach children history.
【4】How do you understand the underlined sentence at the end of the passage?
A. Children will learn well in a relaxed classroom atmosphere.
B. Only a few children will actually learn when there is no discipline.
C. Relaxed discipline is necessary for children to develop.
D. No children will learn anything without strict discipline.
【5】What is the author’s attitude toward the theories of modern psychology?

24、I’m sitting here in this coffee shop. You know the one there by Allen street. The town is filled with thousands of middle class college kids living off their parent’s money.
The coffee shop is where the ones come to play the part of sophisticated bohemians (放荡不羁的文化人). The pretensions (自命不凡) glow from their line-less faces as they sip cappuccinos and chew strawberry cookies. The boys to my right are discussing Nabokov with a serious air, a copy of Sartre’s Cuba lies on the table.
The young woman on my left is declaring that she can never allow her creativity to be killed by entering the work force. The man with her scratches his goatee (胡子) in agreement, occasionally suggesting they go back to his place to hear his new Washington Squares CD. Matt has just designed a new international symbol for peace. He moves from table to table trying to sell hand painted T-shirts that bear the design. Tomorrow he’s leaving for the 25th anniversary Woodstock concert where he hopes to strike it rich with his creation.
Gopha the skinny Indian boy feels like singing me a verse of ‘It Ain’t Me Babe’ when I ask him if he’s a friend of Monica’s. Jason is trying to talk Gopha into a dollar bet on a game of chess. Between times Jason will chew your ear off with his plans to conquer the music industry while studying entertainment law, but when it comes to his never ending dollar chess matches he’s quiet as a church mouse.
I sit among them. To all surface appearances one and the same. If they could only see I would rather reach into their flesh and tear out their shallow little hearts than listen to another second of their prattle (闲扯).
With no job, no gigs, and my girlfriend’s so far gone she might as well be on another planet, I’ve been leading the writer’s quiet cafe life, spending my free time outdoors drinking iced teas and cheap wines. I chat warmly with whoever decides to squander away their hours in my surrounding area.
But behind my eyes is an unspoken challenge to any and every one of these social elites (精英) to just once say one thing that would inspire me. Just one little idea which is new and meaningful. Unfortunately original thoughts are zero here.
In my secret mind I wish to run like a madman banging gongs and speaking in tongues. Or maybe jump on a table and sing the Star Spangled Banner in the forgotten language of the Hottentots. I know these thoughts only reveal me as a fool because the spark I search for cannot be found in acts of shocking performance art. Where it truly comes from is one of the mysteries which will always hang around me.

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写一段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When I was about to turn thirteen, my dad decided I should experience a ritual (仪式) to test my strength and courage before I entered manhood.
So one sunny Saturday morning, my dad asked his friend Joe to arrange a fire line (防火隔离带) for the test. A fire line is a man-made break in vegetation (植被) to help slow wild land fires. It is not a marked route and can be rather easy to be lost. Unknown to me was the fact that my dad had walked the fire line and they had set up camps where they could glass the entire fire line. My dad walked with me to the fire-line entry point. He had his usual smile as he looked me in the eye and told me something that had rung in my ears many times, “I believe in you, son!”
With my jaw set, I turned towards the mountain and set off. After a while, I turned and shouted, “See you on top, pops!” I thought I saw him wiping his eyes. As I turned, I wondered why he cried. Dad had been there for everything my whole life. He would take time off from work to help in my school classes and no dad throws a better pizza party! He never missed a track meet, football game or science fair.
I took a good look at the mountain and realised I could jog to the top. The cool spring air felt fantastic against my skin. I felt so alive! I knew this was a likely place for snakes, so I carefully chose my path all the time. I finally made it to the top, only to find myself completely alone. So I started down the winding dirt road wondering, “Where are they?”
