二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、   There are many protected areas all over the world from invasive species. However, most of them are still vulnerable (易受伤害的) to invasion, according to a research conducted by scientists from China and the UK.

The study, led by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, was published in the journal Nature Communications. It showed how the majority of protected areas are no more than 10 kilometers away from an area with the presence of invasive species. Tim Blackburn, a co-author of the study and a professor from University College London, said that introducing invasive species is among the worst damage that humans can inflict to the natural environment.

Invasive alien species or IAS can harm an ecosystem by competing with or killing native species and destroying habitats, among many impacts. Aliens are species that are not naturally occurring in a particular area and are introduced through humans. Invasion by such species is considered as among the five worst direct drivers of biodiversity loss worldwide. Aliens establish populations at more new areas at an ever-increasing pace.

The researchers discovered that lower than ten percent of protected areas have the 894 surveyed invasive species within them, which suggests that, in general, protected areas are effectively shielded against invasion. However, all of them are still at risk from IAS, because at least one alien species was found within 100 kilometers of 99% of the surveyed protected areas’ boundaries.

The research team also discovered that protected regions that contain more invasive animal species experience a more significant influence or presence of humans, otherwise known as the human footprint index. This is caused by factors like large human populations and transport links.

In addition, protected areas that have been established more recently and are more extensive have a more significant number of IAS. The older protected areas are usually in more remote locations, which provide them with better protection from human impacts.

Dr. Li who is a famous biologist said that for now, the majority of protected areas are free from IAS. Still, it may not be true for long. He adds that those areas which are easily accessible to many people count as the most highly vulnerable.

1Which word is closest to the underlined word “inflict” in meaning in paragraph 2?

2What can we learn from the third paragraph?

A.Alien species are dangerous to native species and their habitats.

B.Native species are not strong enough to compete with aliens.

C.Alien species have a much stronger appetite than native species.

D.The number of native species increases more slowly than that of alien species.

3What is also closely related to the alien invasion according to the study?

A.The local weather. B.Human activity.

C.Regional locations. D.Practical measures.

4What’s Dr. Li’s attitude towards the future of protected areas?

A.Positive. B.Subjective. C.Uncaring. D.Worried.

23、Singing has always made Stephen Dunn, 64, of Melbourne, feel joyful. He occasionally sang with bands in the past. When he was diagnosed (诊断) with Parkinson’s disease two years ago, he remembered that his father, who’d also had the condition, lost his ability to sing as the disease progressed.

Hoping to prevent a similar fate, Stephen joined ParkinSong last year, a local group of Parkinson’s patients who meet monthly with a music therapist (治疗学家). They sing together and learn skills to help preserve their singing and speaking voices.

“The session involves vocal exercises, breathing exercises, correct posture and that sort of thing,” he says. “Our vocal cords (声带) are like any other muscle in our body. If you don’t use it, you lose it.”

Helping Parkinson’s patients maintain their voices is just one way that music therapy benefits people. A variety of music programmes can improve the mental or physical health of people with numerous diseases and conditions. There are no potential side effects, except, perhaps, getting a song stuck in your head.

When therapy is needed to relieve pain or maintain or restore function to the body, different options are available. Physical therapy can be effective, but repetitive exercises may be boring. Music can add an element of fun to therapy.

Music is an ideal motivator, because people have deep emotional responses to it on many levels; researchers and music therapists latch onto this to create treatments that can be as effective as, or more effective than, traditional therapies.

“Music’s so multi-dimentional,” says Jeanette Tamplin, a music therapist and research fellow at the University of Melbourne who’s involved with ParkinSong. “It can be very functional. Like you’re getting people to walk in time to music. Or it can help them to access emotions and process grief (悲伤) and adjustment through songs.”

Doctors recommend music therapy to treat certain conditions, and researchers are working to expand the reach of treatments.

【1】What’s the purpose of Stephen Dunn’s joining ParkinSong?

A.To train his vocal cord.

B.To learn more singing skills

C.To meet people with Parkinson

D.To stop himself losing his ability to sing

【2】What can be inferred from the passage?

A.Music motivates people to express all their feelings.

B.Music has the best effect on restoring the function of body.

C.Music therapy brings patients more fun than traditional one.

D.Music therapy helps maintain people’s voice in a limited way.

【3】What will probably be talked about in the following paragraph?

A.ParkinSong gathers more Parkinson patients to sing together.

B.Music therapy is used in treatments of other conditions.

C.Doctors found new therapies for Parkinson’s patients.

D.The origin of music therapy in Parkinson treatment.

24、It is universally acknowledged that renewable energy sources such as solar, wind and hydropower are all much better for the climate than fossil fuels. It is true for wind and solar. However, the picture for hydropower is more complicated than we think.

A new study by the Environmental Defense Fund analyzed the climate impacts of 1,500 hydropower facilities across the globe. That accounts for about half of hydropower generation worldwide. The researchers looked at whether the facilities behave as a greenhouse gas sink or as a source. To figure this out, they looked into all the different components that help determine a hydropower facility's greenhouse gas emissions (排放).

“There are so many contributors to greenhouse gas emissions from hydropower — but essentially, the majority of greenhouse gas emissions arise from the reservoir (水库) itself, as vegetation and soils are submerged underwater in the dam that is used for the hydropower generation.” said lissa Ocko, a senior climate scientist at the Environmental Defense Fund and co-author of the study. As the submerged vegetation breaks down, it releases greenhouse gases such as CO2.

“The larger the surface area of the reservoir, the more greenhouse gases are going to be given out from that reservoir. Also, the temperature plays a role as well how warm the reservoir is will affect how much greenhouse gases are produced and given out from the reservoir.” added Ocko.

Through their analysis, Ocko and her co-author Steven Hamburg, also with the Environmental Defense Fund, discovered that the climate impacts of hydropower cover a complete range. The good news is that some facilities perform just as well as wind and solar. But shockingly, more than 100 facilities are actually worse for the climate than fossil fuels. The study is in the journal Environmental Science and Technology.

This finding doesn't mean we should forget about hydropower. “But we just need to be careful to make sure that we have climate benefits. There are a lot of situations where hydropower can be equal to wind and solar. So it really depends on the specific facility." said Ocko.

【1】How do scientists prove hydropower facilities' effect on the climate?

A.By making comparisons.

B.By conducting experiments.

C.By referring to previous studies.

D.By analyzing causes and effects.

【2】What are the main sources of greenhouse gases from hydropower?

A.Vegetation and soils.

B.Heat and sunlight.

C.Pollutants in the reservoir.

D.Components of the generators.

【3】What have Ocko and her co-author Steven Hamburg found?

A.The surface area of a reservoir decides the climate.

B.Hydropower often influences the climate in all aspects.

C.Some facilities perform much better than wind and solar.

D.Fossil fuels are worse for the climate than over 100 facilities.

【4】What is the text mainly about?

A.Scientists urge an end to hydropower.

B.Hydropower is not necessarily green.

C.Hydropower is worse than fossil fuels.

D.Renewable energy is a complicated issue.

三、完形填空(共1题,共 5分)

25、When the subject of friendship comes up in a conversation, you often hear some form of this complaint: It is hard to make friends as an adult. And if, for whatever reason, you do not _______ your childhood or college friends, you can end up in your 30s (or 40s, or 50s) knowing a lot of people, but being close to very few of them.

It is not hard to understand why. When you are overworked and overwhelmed, the _______ to have dinner with a friend versus turning on Netflix and eating pizza with your spouse (伴侣) can be hard to come by. But the research is clear: Close friendships are _______ to one’s best health and well-being.

“We’re _______ creatures,” said Serena Chen, a professor of psychology at the University of California, Berkeley. “When we’re intimate (亲密的) with another person, we can experience _______ mental and physical reactions in our body, mind and heart.”

But what exactly does _______ mean?

Popular culture is filled with enviable examples: the friend who will take a bullet for you; the friend who you can call in the middle of the night and always count on to be there for you, regardless of the _______; the friend with whom you can share anything.

_______ close friendships (unsurprisingly) do not need to be quite so extreme. “The key to a close friendship is intimacy (亲密), and a big part of intimacy is being able to be fully yourself and be seen and _______ by others,” Dr. Chen said.

Reciprocation (相互性) is also a key element to the ________ of intimacy. That explains why all the “likes” and compliments from your social media friends for something you share online—though they may feel good—don’t necessarily create intimacy because there is no ________ of ideas and feelings, explained Dr. Chen.

Now you may be left wondering, if close friendships really are that vital to the well-being of humans, wouldn’t it make more sense for us to be ________ skilled at making them? One would tend to think so, but it turns out that the opposite may be true: Close friendships are so important to us ________ they are so difficult to form.

According to John Cacioppo, the late social neuroscientist (神经学家) who specialized in the study of loneliness, humans would have evolved a built-in bias (偏见) against easily making friends because ________ an enemy would have been more important than making a friend. “If I make a mistake and detect a person as an enemy who turns out to be a friend, that’s O.K.—I don’t make the friend as fast, but I ________ .”

Dr. Capiocco said in a 2017 interview with The Atlantic. “But if I mistakenly detect someone as a friend when they’re in fact a dangerous enemy, that can cost me my life. Over evolution, we’ve been shaped to have this bias.”
