21、What's the Mere Exposure Effect?
Has it ever occurred to you that you started liking that song you used to hate because you had listened to it repeatedly? Have you ever noticed how, the more time you spend with a person, the more pleasant he/she becomes? 【1】 Also known as the familiarity principle, this effect explains why, by repeatedly exposing ourselves to a new stimulus, our response to it becomes more positive.
Robert Zajonc is one of the authors who studied this particular psychological effect. He proved the presence of this preference in the face of stimuli of a very diverse nature. Words, sounds, photographs of faces… 【2】
Researchers conducted a study to test the influence of this effect on the liking for certain foods. For this, they gave a group of students several juices they didn't know until that moment. 【3】 When asked which ones they liked best, there was a clear tendency to judge those they drank the most as more positive.
Fechner, a German psychologist, the father of some current psychophysical theories, offers an explanation for this effect. 【4】 But this "newness phobia" fades away as you repeatedly expose yourself to the no-longer-new stimuli.
However, you must keep in mind that you can get bored if repeated exposure to the stimulus becomes excessive. 【5】 And if you watch the same movie every day, it'll lose its charm.
This principle of familiarity is the foundation of many of your preferences, regardless of your greater or lesser taste for adventure and risk. The products you buy, the places you frequent, and the people you like can all be affected by this principle. Therefore, it's convenient to be aware of its influence on your mind.
A.This is what the mere-exposure effect is about.
B.The reason for the mere exposure effect is uncertain.
C.Some tried them five times, others 10, and others 15
D.People tend to react with fear or anxiety to new elements.
E.If you eat the same thing every day, you'll end up hating it.
F.In all cases, people seem to favor those most familiar to them.
G.The effect happens due to their fear of new challenges and threats.
22、One October evening, I had gotten home from work about an hour earlier. As I often did after a long day, I went straight to my backyard and did some work in my flower garden before making dinner for my husband and myself. I had only just walked a few steps when I suddenly felt a horrifying blow to the right side of my neck. It felt as though someone had hit me with a baseball bat. I knew that no one was in the yard with me, so no one could have hit me. Totally confused, I reached up and, to my shock and horror, realized that I had been shot—with an arrow.
I grabbed the arrow which had hit my neck and ran inside, calling my husband's name. Ed was in the house talking to our daughter on the phone. He dropped the phone and ran to me. Ed grabbed me and told me to lie down on the couch. Then he went to call 911. I lay there and prayed. I didn't know if there was any way that I could survive. The arrow had come from a young man practicing with a bow, used for hunting, in his backyard.
I was being taken to the hospital to remove the arrow. The next morning after two hours’ operation, the doctor came in. He told me something that rocked the world. He said that the CT scan had found that I had a brain tumor, but it was located in a very difficult place, which would have resulted in a serious stroke. The brain operation was successful, and in less than a week I was back home.

【4】What's the main idea of the passage?
A.No man is wise at all times.

23、First aid is emergency care for a victim of sudden illness or injury until more skillful medical treatment is available.
First aid may save a life or improve certain important signs including pulse, temperature, an unobstructed (未堵塞的) airway and breathing. In minor emergencies, first aid may prevent a victim's condition from worsening and provide relief from pain.
First aid must be done as quickly as possible. In the case of the badly injured, a few minutes can make the difference between complete recovery and loss of life.
First-aid measures depend upon a victim’s needs and the provider’s level of knowledge and skill. Knowing what not to do in an emergency is as important as knowing what to do. Improperly moving a person with a neck injury, for example, can lead to lifelong disability.
Despite the variety of possible injuries, several suggestions should be followed if first aid applies to all emergencies.
The first step is to call for professional medical help. The victim, if sensible, should be reassured (使安心) that medical aid has been requested, and asked for permission to provide any first aid. Next, assess (评估) the scene, asking other people or the injured person's family or friends about details of the injury or illness, any care that may have already been given, and preexisting conditions such as high blood pressure and heart trouble. The victim's medical card should be checked that describes special medical conditions. Unless the accident scene becomes unsafe or the victim may suffer further injury, do not move the victim.
First aid requires rapid assessment of victims to determine whether life-threatening conditions exist.
One method to assess a victim’s condition is known as the ABC, which stands for:
A-Airway: Is it open and unobstructed?
B-Breathing: Is the person breathing? Look, listen, and feel for breathing.
C-Circulation (循环) : Is there a pulse? Is the person bleeding badly?
Check skin color and temperature for additional indications of circulation problems.
【1】It is very important in first aid to________.
A.move the injured person from the scene of accident immediately
B.spend a few minutes making the difference between recovery and death
C.know what to do and what not to do according to the condition of the victim
D.make it clear what illness the victim has had

24、 At the 4th Street Photo Gallery on the comer of the Bowery, many photos are strung together like clothes on a laundry line. There are portraits of Muhammad Ali and Jean-Michel Basquiat, plus a series of cityscapes detailedly captured over 60 years by Alex Harsley, a neglected but talented New York photographer.
The city has been Mr Harsley’s home since 1948, when, aged ten, he moved there from South Carolina. He took his first photograph ten years later, and became the first black photographer to work for the city’s district attorney’s office. His vivid pictures freeze moments in New York’s evolution from the 1950s to the present. “It could start with the smell of something burning.” he says of his method. “And then you see a family sitting on the steps of a funeral home sadly looking at the firemen going through their routine.”
Some of the scenes in the collection were captured from the window of his old apartment in Harlem; they include images of black activists, streets submerged in snow and shots of the Crown Heights riots of 1991. A.D. Coleman, a photography critic, says Mr. Harsley has been able to capture the lives of minority groups by making himself “invisible”. His aim has been to assemble these fragments (片段) into an extended history of the city.
Mr. Harsley’s gallery is a time capsule. For decades, it is also a hub for the city’s artistic underworld. In the 1970s New York’s photography scene was flourishing, but exclusive. As Mr. Harsley puts it, “a number of great artists were swept aside” because they lacked connections. Helping talent became part of his mission. In 1971 he established The Minority Photographers, an organization that helps up-and-coming artists exhibit their work. He opened his gallery two years later; many photographers have had their first shows there.
【1】How does the author describe Alex Harsley in the first paragraph?
A.Undervalued but expert. B.Gifted but exclusive.
C.Unknown but devoted. D.Gifted but awkward.
【2】What does the underlined sentence mean?
A.His pictures show freezing weather in New York from the 1950s to the present.
B.His pictures capture the cheerful moments in New York since the 1950s.
C.His pictures record some historic occasions of New York over the past decades.
D.His pictures illustrate the vivid lives of minority groups in New York over the past decades.
【3】Why does Mr. Harsley make himself “invisible”?
A.To assemble the minority groups of the city.
B.To highlight the lives of minority groups.
C.To help promising artists attract more public attention.
D.To build connections between the minority groups and himself.
【4】How did Mr. Harsley help the other artists?
A.He excluded those who looked down upon the unknown artists.
B.He set an organization displaying their works.
C.He established the connections between up-and-coming artists and famous ones.
D.He reduced the rents of the gallery where their photography works were shown.
