21、Volunteers are often overlooked(忽视) by people. But no activities can carry on smoothly without hard-working volunteers. Last month, I volunteered at the Color Run in Melbourne, Australia. Although I didn’t have so much fun as the runners, I still learned a valuable lesson.
My job was to give a high five(击掌) to every runner at the finish line. At the beginning, I saw it as a simple task. When the first runner passed, I reached out my hands and shouted “Good job!” excitedly. However, as more and more people crossed the finish line and clapped their hands with mine, my arms got sore. What’s worse, it became hotter. My clothes were wet because of the sweat(汗水), and I felt really tired. But soon I saw a group of children running towards me. They were about 6 years old. Although they hardly caught their breath, they still kept going with big smiles on their faces. They put up their hands and said loudly, “High five!”
At that moment, I was quite touched. They were so young, and they refused to give up. Suddenly, I felt myself full of strength(力量). I clapped their hands, “Well done, little guys!”
That is the meaning of being a volunteer. It is never an easy job. However, we meet different people and see the spirit that touches us. Although such spirit is not often found in daily life, it can help us learn a lot when we see it by accident.

22、About 4% of the population is what scientists call “amusic”. People who are amusic are born without the ability to enjoy musical notes. Amusic people often can’t tell the differences between two songs.
As a result, songs sound like noise to an amusic. Many amuics compare the sound of music to pieces of metal hitting each other. Life can be hard for amusics. In fact, most people can’t understand what it feels like to be amusic. Just going to a restaurant or a shopping center can be uncomfortable or even painful. That is why many amusics have to stay away from places where there is music. However, this can result in social loneliness.“I used to hate parties,” says Margaret, a seventy-year-old woman who only recently discovered that she was amusic. 23、Imagine you walk into a store. Strangely enough, you see no staff(店员) inside. You pick up things and prepare to wait in line and pay. But even more oddly, there is no cashier at all. So what has happened to this store?
Well, you may have entered Tao Cafe, a cashless store created by Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba. In July, the public got to see the store for the first time at Alibaba’s Taobao Marker Festival in Hangzhou.
The 200-square-meter store sells drinks, fast food and snacks. It can hold up to 50 shoppers at a time. To enter and shop, people only need a smartphone with a Taobao app and the Alipay account(账户).
By scanning their Taobao QR code(二维码), shoppers are followed with cameras for facial recognition. The store has also digitalized(数字化) all goods and their placement on the shelves. So when shoppers pick up goods, the system will be able to “watch” and remember” their choices.
When shoppers are ready to leave, they don’t wait in line to pay. Instead, they go through two checkout doors. Then the bills will be paid with a Taobao account connected to Alipay.
According to Alibaba, the checkout machines can recognize goods even when shoppers put them in pockets or bags. So it is almost impossible to steal things from the store.
Tao Cafe is not the only cashless store in China. A 24-hours convenience store with no staff called BingoBox opened in Shanghai in June. To enter the store, shoppers scan a QR code on WeChat or Alipay. But unlike the Tao Cafe, they have to scan another QR code to leave the BingoBox.
