21、   Before you can commit yourself to achieving a goal, you have to define what exactly your goal is. 1 It can take a lot of thought and consideration to find out specifically what you want. By taking the right steps, your process of deciding on a goal can get much easier.

Defining What You Want.

Start with broad ideas. Answering the question, "What do you want?” is much harder than we may realize,2This isn't a problem starting broad will actually help you map out a clear path towards more specific , attainable goals.

Try free writing to come up with ideas.

3 In that case, try a free writing exercise. Free writing involves simply writing down whatever comes to you with a specific question in mind. You may find that your brain gets more creative when you're not forcing it to come up with ideas.

Define specific aspects of your broad idea.

When you've established a broad idea, you need to break it down to develop a more concrete goal. 4 Now define what a good job means to you --- is it high pay? Good hours? When you've specified different aspects of your broad idea, you are well on your way to setting a meaningful goal.

5

After narrowing down your broad idea and defining what you mean by ityou can decide what exactly your goal is. Taking your broad idea and the narrowed-down elements, you should clearly write what exactly your goal is. With a clear definition, you'll be able to lay out exactly what is required to achieve your goal.

A.Set a meaningful goal.

B.Write out a concrete goal.

C.This is much harder than it may sound.

D.You can have trouble coming up with a broad idea.

E.Many times , people will only have a vague idea of their goal.

F.For example, your broad idea is that you want to help people.

G.For example, your broad idea may be that you want to get a good job.

22、Directions: Read the passage carefully. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given behind. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.

Living off grid

When you need electricity, you just plug in the machine and switch it on. If you need water, you turn on the tap. 1 For many people, these facilities are the basics of civilized society and the idea of living without them seems risky. Yet for a growing number of people, the idea of living off grid — without electricity, water or sewage — is an increasingly attractive lifestyle.

Off-gridders do not have to give up electricity or a modern lifestyle — some choose to, but most use small hydroelectric power systems, solar panels or windmills to generate enough power for their needs. Heating and cooking needs are met by solar energy or wood burning systems, and toilet facilities range from non-water toilets to outside compost toilets. 2 It ranges from traditional yurts (a type of tent) to luxury house with high-speed internet and central heating. Whether they live in simple homes or luxury houses, what they all have in common is that their lifestyles do not create any pollution or carbon emissions — the ultimate goal for off-gridders.

Around 100,000 people are thought to be living off grid in the UK now. 3 They grow their own food, home-school their children and provide their own medical care. They are people who have been priced out of the housing market or who have grown disillusioned with what modern society can offer and who decides that an alternative lifestyle isn’t a pipe dream, but a viable option.

A part from living an alternative lifestyle, cost is a big factor in choosing to live off-grid. Off-grid houses are far cheaper to build than ordinary homes since they don’t need to be connected to the electricity or water supplies and even road access is not necessary. Materials tend to be cheaper, too. Popular options include straw or old tyres and cement.

Surprisingly, the biggest problem off-gridders face is not building their homes or becoming self-sufficient but getting permission to build. Rural areas away from town are the perfect choice but these are often protected by law from construction of any kind or have building restrictions. There are now several websites dedicated to land-sharing so that the costs of buying land and getting permission can be shared, and there are increasing numbers of off-grid communities. 4 Off-gridding could soon be common all over Europe and America.

A.Many are self-sufficient, not just providing their own electricity, water and sewage systems, but in all aspects.

B.After you use the toilet, you flush it and the waste disappears.

C.This shift from individual to group off-gridding reflects the fact that the trend is growing noticeably.

D.They live in a huge variety of types of accommodation.

E.Living off-grid still has a long way to go before it becomes a mainstream way of living.

F.Rather than building permanent homes, vans or mobile homes or even old shipping containers are other options.

23、   During this shopping season, salesmen will come up with different strategies to get your business. Many product companies use specific colors to cause positive emotions and compete for a sale. However, sight is not the only sensory (感官的) retail that companies use. Sounds and smells can also influence consumers’ purchasing decisions.

Nobel Prize-winning research shows that our sense of smell has great power to cause an emotional response. A study published earlier this year compared purchasing in a French flower shop when the smell of lavender (薰衣草) was given off and when it wasn’t. It found that the smell increased the number of consumers’ purchasing items and the amount of their purchases. An earlier study using Nike shoes found that consumers desired the shoes more, and were willing to pay more, when the room had a mixed smell of flowers. Realizing the subconscious impact of smell, many stores apply artificial scents (气味) through their heating and air-conditioning vents (通风口) or place scent machines above their doors. For instance, a coconut scent might make that bikini more appealing as you long for a vacation.

Ever felt frenzied due to a store’s fast-paced music? Or calmed by a piece of light music? A retailer’s choice of music can have a big impact on consumers’ moods. One study found that when subjected to loud music, consumers will spend less time in a store. But interestingly, the researchers did not find a difference in sales or customers’ satisfaction. Another interesting finding from a recent study was that customers actually shop longer when exposed to unfamiliar music. Just as department stores use different scents in certain departments, many use different music in some areas to appeal to varying consumers.

Well, you could always leave the store and take a break, but the food court probably isn’t your best choices as brands like Cinnabon and Panera Bread also use scents as part of their customers’ experience. Online retailers (零售商) use a variety of other strategies to get your business, but you can always neglect those and enjoy the familiar scents of home.

24、If you’ve ever learned a new language, you know how difficult it can be. Native languages seem almost built in. But learning a new language, especially after early childhood, can be a huge task, burdened by long vocabulary lists to memorize and troublesome rules to master. Nevertheless, it’s worth the effort.

John Grundy, a scientist at Iowa State University who specializes in languages and the brain, explains that learning a new language causes extensive neuroplasticity (神经塑性) in the brain. In other words, when you learn a new language, your brain gets rearranged, new connections are made and new pathways are formed. “It’s really just a remodeling of the brain that allows it to become more efficient,” Grundy says.

These changes don’t help with just language functions. Chung-Fat-Yim, a post-doctoral researcher at Northwestern University, says they affect the whole executive processing part of the brain, what she calls the CEO of the brain. Bilinguals (双语者) use that area for language control, but also for other purposes such as the ability to plan for future behaviors, monitor and change behavior as needed, and switch between tasks. Being bilingual might also make you a nicer person. The bilingual person has to have an awareness that different people can hold different mental states about the same event. So they are more likely to develop greater empathy (共情).

Having a second language can even help to prevent or at least delay intelligence decline. There is a consistent finding that bilinguals are able to put off symptoms of mental disorders for about four to six years compared to those speaking one language.

If you’re thinking it’s too late, you’re probably wrong. It’s true that young children do more quickly learn whatever language they’re exposed to. But when it comes to adding on a new one, adults aren’t as at much of a disadvantage as you might think. If you practice a lot and bury yourself in the language, you can see the benefits at any age, especially when you get older.

【1】What does John Grundy think of picking up a new language?

A.It reshapes the brain and improves its efficiency.

B.It indeed lays a heavy burden on learners.

C.It is enough to memorize vocabulary and grammar.

D.It has a negative effect on learners’ native language.

【2】What do we know about Bilinguals in paragraph 3?

A.They change their behaviors frequently.

B.They may not concentrate on one thing.

四、书面表达(共1题,共 5分)

26、阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。

Feeling hungry? If you're feeling starved, what is the easiest way to satisfy your hunger? Many of us will reach for a takeaway menu and order some delicious but possibly unhealthy food. And our increasingly busy life adds to our need to buy ready-made food on the go or delivered to our home.

Eating options are endless, and new technology means we can feed our desire at the push of a button. Takeaway delivery apps make ordering food quick and convenient. This is especially the case during the recent coronavirus crisis, when people stuck at home with nothing to cook or lacked the skills to prepare a meal for themselves. It's calculated that in the UK alone, people eat three million takeaway meals a day, and the three biggest delivery apps together offer a choice of 100 cuisines from 60,000 restaurants. Amelia Brophy, Head of UK Data Products at You Goy, told the BBC that its research “suggests that the frequency of takeaways ordered is expected to increase in the future.”

It's no wonder we are tempted (诱惑) to skip the grocery shopping, avoid the kitchen, and tuck into (大口吃) something that someone else has prepared. But ordering a deep crust pizza, a spicy curry or a box of noodles, can come at a price both financially and to our health. Eating too much processed and unhealthy fast food has some effect on obesity and the risk of developing certain diseases. Children and adolescents who eat fast food at least three times a week are more likely to develop eczema, according to one study. Eczema is a skin condition that causes patches of itchy skin.

Of course, reducing salt, sugar and fat is one way to make takeaway food healthier. Yet, that's far from enough. The best advice you might want to take is to find a recipe book and try making your own meal.
