二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、In order to learn about advanced scientific technology and ideas for combating desertification, Rezaali Pakzad left the Iranian capital Teheran, in 2018, to study in Northwest China’s Gansu Province.

He is a 27-year-old doctoral student at Lanzhou University, focusing on soil desertification control. In his view, Iran, like other arid and semiarid countries, faces environmental problems such as desertification. When he did field surveys and research in Minqin county, Gansu, he found that the local desertification characteristics were very similar to those of his hometown.

“Minqin is between two deserts. From being “about to disappear” to being gradually green, from being ravaged by “sand devils” to being covered by vast green plants, the scientific and effective prevention and control methods of the Chinese government have greatly changed the county, and made me see the hope of improving the ecology in my hometown,” he says.

He believes that China has certainly contributed to the global effort to combat desertification, and that the Chinese contribution is worth learning from. China has developed advanced technology models, such as quicksand fixation and vegetation restoration, and protective forest systems along major transport routes, which have introduced more green to deserts.

Already among the top nations in the world in the field of combating desertification, China has shared its experience with other countries, carried out international exchanges and cooperation, and contributed to global desertification control, he says.

He believes he has made progress during his five years of living and studying in China. By learning more about the Chinese language and culture, he has adapted to life in China and enjoyed the help and sincere concern of his teachers, classmates and friends here.

He hopes to achieve a lot, at a high level, in his research field and to contribute to international exchanges and cooperation in desertification control. “I want to be an ‘ecological messenger’ by spreading green ideas,” he says.

22、For hundreds of years, possibly much longer, hot pot has always been one of China’s most popular foods. It is so popular that people joke any problem can be solved over hot pot. With a hot pot, you can put in any ingredient (食材) that you like. The same pot can serve meals to all the people sitting around the table. No one is left out, and everyone gets to eat as much or as little as they want. 【1】The fire from a hot pot can melt just about any icy disagreement and warm just about any heart.

Perhaps the most popular kind of hot pot is Sichuan hot pot, with its spicy red peppers. What makes Sichuan hot pot different from other hot pots is the use of huajiao. 【2】It also has the strange effect of making the red peppers taste even hotter.

【3】Beijing hot pot uses lamb and many of the same ingredients as Sichuan hot pot, but has a lighter taste. The Northeast Chinese hot pot usually contains pork and pickled cabbage, while Guangdong hot pot uses a chicken or a fish broth (汤底). 【4】.

23、Male cockatoos (风头鹦鹉) might be the rock stars of the animal kingdom-but unsurprisingly, they mainly just do it for the female.

The Australian bird is the only animal other than humans known how to make tools to compose music, a new study says. While other animals, such as chimpanzees, enjoy drumming on sticks and logs, they don’t make their own musical tools to do it.

Robert Heinsohn, a biologist at Australia National University, first witnessed the behavior in male cockatoos in northern Australia in 1997. Then, he spent the next two decades videotaping the shy animals to find out if their drumming was truly music—defined as regular beat production, repeated components, and, of course, personal style. By analyzing the beats made by the birds, he found that the sounds were highly predictable, just like human music that had a unique style. “The cockatoo was holding what looked like a stick and beating it on the tree branch, and every so often he would pause and let out either a long whistle or a sharp scream,” he said.

Importantly, male cockatoo primarily started drumming when they were around females—about 70 percent of the time, according to his research, published this week in the journal Science.

But Heinsohn did not found the females’ reactions to the males’ music and the male cockatoos didn’t dance, either, while they produced their own unique beats-an activity that usually goes hand in hand with music for many animals in love, such as swans, cranes and birds of paradise.

So Heinsohn thought such behavior may not be learned for courtship (求爱). “It seems that they are open to the pleasure of rhythm, just like humans,” he says. “As soon as one male works out a pleasing drumming rhythm that gets the approval from the females, they would stay together to enjoy it.”

【1】What can we learn about the cockatoos?

24、   Cats may have “attachment (依恋) styles” that are similar to those of people. Contrary to cats' original reputation, most cats form deep, close relationships with their owners, researchers say.

A team of researchers studied the relationship between the owners and their kittens by a type of psychology experiment. They set up a room, which is bare except for a few toys. The team instructed each owner to sit in a circle outlined on the floor in the middle of the room and ignore his or her kitten for two minutes, not making eye contact or speaking unless the cat stepped inside the circle. Owners were allowed to interact (互动) with their pet if the cat entered the circle. Then, the owner left the cat alone in the room for two minutes, before re-entering and again sitting inside the circle.

The researchers tested 79 kittens and their owners and recorded each pair’s interactions on camera. Based on how the cat reacted to their owner’s return, the researchers believed 70 of the participants have attachment styles. The findings indicate that the attachment is probably a biological characteristic that may have evolved (进化) to improve survival.

To see if a particular kitten’s attachment could change with training, 39 of the kittens were arranged to join a special class and 31 weren’t. For six weeks of classes, the kittens that attended a special class socialized with other cats and unfamiliar adults, and learned how to sit or walk on leash (皮带). But when all of the kittens repeated the original experiment, very few switched attachment styles. It proves that the relationship formed between a human and a cat is stable over time, which means those first interactions are important, the researchers say.

The team hopes that understanding how cats bond with humans could help more stray (无主的) cats be adopted.

1What is the original impression that cats make on people according to the text?

A.Indifferent. B.Close.

C.Kind. D.Lazy.

2What is the second paragraph mainly about?

A.The process of the experiment.

A.It changes easily.

B.It forms in six weeks.

C.It lasts for a long time.

D.It only shows to its owner.

4From which is the text probably taken?

A.A biology textbook.

B.A research paper.
