二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、My friend Gwen posted a photo yesterday on her social page. The photo was of a Christmas tree made from carefully-placed books. It was very clever. After doing a little research, I found that making Christmas trees from a pile of books is popular right now, especially at libraries.

The Inglewood Library in Los Angeles created a tree from little used books using red books on the bottom to copy a tree skirt and green books for the tree itself. Other examples are from the Gleeson Library in San Francisco and a small bookstore window in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. One of the great things about using books to create a decorative Christmas tree is that there is no waste. After Dec 25, the books just go back on the shelf.

I couldn’t find any specific instructions online with tips for building a tree out of books, but it seemed pretty simple. So last night, my 9-year-old son and I emptied several shelves in his room and built our own tree out of copies of Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Captain Underpants, Stink, Harry Potter and dozens of other books. The top book on the tree is The Best Christmas Pageant Ever.

We took an old string of lights and wrapped them around the tree and a spare star tree topper that we had and lit the tree of books up. He was thrilled to have his own Christmas tree in his bedroom.

We didn’t worry about making the tree perfectly symmetrical (对称的), but with a little more time and patience we could have made a tree that was taller and a little neater. That wouldn’t have been nearly as much fun for us, though. I could see the tree through the crack in his door last night as he was sleeping, and it made me smile every time I walked past his bedroom.

【1】What inspired the author to build a tree out of books?

A.A photo posted on the Internet.

B.A Christmas tree at a friend's home

C.A Christmas tree he saw in a library.

D.A friend's note about the use of books

【2】What is the second paragraph mainly about?

A.The popularity of trees made of books

B.Some libraries’ love for Christmas trees.

C.The books used to build Christmas trees.

D.The feature of Christmas trees in libraries.

【3】How did the author manage to build a tree out of books?

A.By using books borrowed.

B.By asking his friends for help.

C.By searching online for useful tips.

D.By making preparations with his son.

【4】What did the author feel satisfied with?

A.The appearance of the tree.

B.The fruit of their joint efforts.

C.The process of building the tree.

D.His son’s academic performance.

22、   In space, there is no up or down. Without the gravity that we experience on Earth, as-tronauts and everything else on a spaceship float freely.

Humans can experience the sense of zero gravity without going into space. HowA zero-gravity flight. When an airplane flies in a lot of parabolas(抛物线), a man-made zero-gravity environment is set up. Everything in the plane floats, even passengers.

Gravity has an effect on everything from the human body and mind to the behavior of plants and the way machines run. Space travel is expensive and dangerous. But zero-gravity flights let scientists conduct experiments in an environment that mimics(模拟) the conditions of space. On each of its research trip, Zero-G flies about 30 parabolas, each of which creates a period of weightlessness that lasts about 30 seconds. Nikolaus Kuhn of the University of Ba-sel, in Switzerland, flew with Zero-G. He was conducting an experiment about soil and the flow of water on Mars. The Red Planet has about one-third of the gravity that Earth has. This means water flows more slowly on Mars. By making the parabolas less steep, zero-gravity flights can make the feeling of Martian gravity. Flying with Zero-G has been necessary for Kuhn’s research. “It is the only chance, other than going to Mars, to mimic movement of water as it would be on Mars,” he told TFK.

For years, NASA used zero-gravity flights to prepare and train astronauts. “I have not been to space,” Peters of Zero-G says, “But I have been told by astronauts that zero-gravity feels exactly the same.” As humans continue to explore the universe beyond Planet Earth, zero-gravity flights will remain an important and fun tool. “It never gets old,” Peters says “I would do it every weekend for the rest of my life if I could.”

1Why do scientists set up man-made zero-gravity environment

A.To study the water on the earth.

B.To offer weightlessness as a business.

C.To take scientists to any other planets.

D.To mimic the condition of space for experiments.

2How much time of weightlessness can a Zero-G light offer

A.About 30 seconds. B.About 90 seconds.

C.About 15 minutes. D.About 30 minutes.

3What feature do the parabolas in Zero-G flights have

A.The gentler parabolas are, the more satisfied the researchers are.

B.The steeper parabolas are, the less weight the passengers feel.

C.The steeper parabolas are, the more successful the experiments are.

D.The gentler parabolas are, the more quickly water on Mars flows.

4What can be inferred about the Zero-G flight from the text

A.It is useless for training astronauts.

B.It has no side effect on human body.

C.It creates a substitutable environment of zero gravity in space.

D.It is cheaper but more dangerous than space travel.

23、Whenever the word “hero” comes to me, I immediately think of three Hs: honorable, hardworking, and happy. When I think more about this word, I picture someone who has accomplished good things for people and tries to do the right thing Hattie Elizabeth Alexander is one person whom I find to be very heroic.

Hattie was born in Baltimore, Maryland on April 5, 1901. During her time at College she earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Bacteriology and Physiology. These were just the first steps towards what she was finally going to be remembered for. After college Hattie attended Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and received her medical degree.

After her education, she pursued her career, and after much time and hard work, she drastically reduced the number of infants(幼儿) dying from meningitis(脑膜炎). Hattie was very dedicated to her work and helped at as many locations as she could. Spending substantial(大量的) time in the laboratory, Hattie successfully developed a cure against the disease, which decreased the death rate to 20 percent. At the same time, she was also a teacher working with Columbia University.

She was a caring lady interested in other people’s lives. When she was teaching at Columbia University, other members would talk to her about students that were failing their classes, and somehow Hattie could always find convincing reasons as to why they should not be driven away. Later, Hattie became an instructor in Pediatrics at New York City’s Babies Hospital. After many honors, she became the first woman president of the American Pediatric Society in 1965. This was her last major achievement, for soon after, Hattie died of cancer on June 24, 1968.

Hattie is my hero because her positive attitude and strength helped her accomplish great things for others. She gave them her strength by developing medicines against diseased, which, by doing so, made them stronger. This is what makes Hattie Elizabeth Alexander my hero.

24、One of the classic science-fiction treatments of the end of civilization was The Death of Grass, by John Christopher, in which a mysterious sickness struck down all the grasses on which most of the world's agriculture is based, from rice to wheat. Tn the end, politics among the survivors of disease, war and famine were reduced to bitter fratricidal struggle over a defensible potato patch. Like most of the so-called 'comfortable disaster" novels, this could be criticized for optimism. Depressing as a future of famine and the war of all against all might seem, the consequences were largely limited to humans.

However, the threatened extinction of insect populations around the world raises the prospect of a much less general disaster, which would involve plants, birds, fish, small mammals, and everything else depending on insects. That's just the start. Other species, and we ourselves, depend on the animals and plants that need insects. When they go, we go. This is not just a greater disaster. It's a much more reasonable one. The most recent study has concluded that insect biomass is decreasing around the world at a rate of 2.5% a year. At that rate, half the insects in the world will be gone in 50 years' time, and all of them in a century — though no one will be keeping track of centuries then.

The chief driver of this disaster is unchecked human greed. I spite our individual and even collective cleverness, we behave as a species with as little foresight as a colony of nematode worms that will consume everything that it can reach until all is gone and it dies off naturally. The challenge of behaving more intelligently than creatures that have no brain at all will not be easy. But unlike the nematodes, we know what to do. The UN convention on biodiversity was signed in 1992, alongside the convention on climate change. Giving it the strength to hold back our appetites is now urgent. Biodiversity is not an optional extra. It is the web that holds all life, including human life.

The two main expressions of greed that speed this apocalypse are global warming and industrial agriculture. It appears that most of the damage is being done in the developed world by farming practices. The use of giant fields, lack of shelter for insects of any sort at all, whether they are harmful to human interests or not, and where the plants are drenched in long-lasting pesticides, is fatal for uncounted billions of insects. The effects of this kind of forming reach beyond the fields immediately affected, too. There has been a huge loss of aquatic insect species from the rivers into which the products of industrial agriculture arc flushed by rain. Even in German nature reserves, which arc by definition protected from the use of pesticides, there have been sleep falls in insect populations because so many of the most widely used ones are persistent and prevent breeding.

【1】Which of the following statements about The Death of Grass is true?

A.It holds an optimistic attitude towards famine in the future.

B.It understates the severity of the disaster facing the world.

C.It gives a vivid account of the most serious famine in history.

D.It demonstrates how evil human nature turns out to be.

【2】In paragraph 2, the writer mentions the most recent study in order to________.

A.prove that the prediction about the great disaster makes sense

B.show how soon the insects worldwide will go extinct

C.argue for the necessity to protect insect populations

D.suggest a possible approach to increasing insect biomass

【3】What can be inferred from the passage?

A.Humans are similar to nematode in that both of them lack foresight.

B.We haven't done enough about maintaining biodiversity.

C.Modem farming is to blame for the threatened extinction of insects.

D.Germany sets a good example by minimizing the use of pesticides.

【4】What will the author probably discuss after the last paragraph?

A.How industrial agriculture brings about apocalypse.

B.What influence pesticides may have on people's lives.

C.Why insect populations in Germany are on the decline.

D.Where unchecked human greed can also by spotted.

四、书面表达(共1题,共 5分)

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I was at Lens Crafters waiting to pick up my new pair of glasses. A mom as well as her little girl walked in. The mom was probably in her late twenties and the little girl was about five.

Both of their clothes were badly dated to say the least. It was obvious that the family’s financial windfall (意外之财) had not yet arrived. I overheard a comment the comment made to the saleslady that she was in between job 1 and job 2 of the day, so she didn't have a lot of time.

The little girl and the mom proceeded around the store looking at these little tiny frames for the girl’s face. The saleslady was helping them try on frames and pulling aside her favorites.

You knew how some little kids actually looked ten times cuter in glasses, and so the little girl did. She found these cute little frames with a butterfly on them. She was so happy, smiling from ear to ear while she looked at herself in the mirror.

The saleslady rang the glasses up on the till (收银台). The mom pulled out a coupon (优惠券), and the saleslady stared blankly at the coupon. She then explained that for some reason this coupon could not be used, pointing out the miniscule (极小的) words printed at the bottom.

Then the mom chatted back and forth for a bit with the saleslady and then finally leaned down to her daughter and explained to her that there would be no glasses that day, maybe next month she said.

The little girl’s eyes started to tear up. The mom leaned a little closer and told her it would be OK and that she needed a little more time to save up for them. The little girl responded, “But Mommy, I can’t see and I want to be able to see when I start school next week. I want to do well, Mommy! What if I’m in the back?”

注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;

2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

Seeing this, I quietly called the saleslady over.
