二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、   We often hear such statements: “I spilled (洒出) juice, but it wasn't my fault.” “I got in trouble at school, but it wasn't my fault.” or “I was in a car accident, but it wasn't my fault.” That “It's not my fault.” is a go-to response for so many people and especially teenagers.

Parents complain they are tired of the “excuse”. The reason why variations of “It's not my fault.” are so popular is that it lets us off the hook from guilt and blame. I'm a fan of not owning responsibility for things that I can't control. Teens who often say “It's my fault.” when something bad happens tend to be highly self-critical, perfectionistic and more easier to be troubled by anxiety and depression.

While it is important to recognize lack of reason to blame oneself, many teens over rely on “It's not my fault.” When trying to get them to take responsibility, parents usually attempt to convince their teens that something is their fault. The approach tends to be ineffective and turn into a power struggle. No one wins. A more effective approach can be to stress significant drawbacks to consistently focusing on removing our responsibility with this phrase.

Overuse of the phrase can result in feelings of lack of ability to control their own lives. This sense has been shown to cause low motivation. Besides creating feelings of lack of ability, overuse of “It's not my fault.” focuses a teen's attention on what is done as opposed to what needs to be done.

People may not have caused all their problems but they have to solve them anyway. The example I frequently share with teens is the question of what one will do if he is pushed into a deep lake. One can certainly stay in water, yelling, “It's not my fault.” However, that won't get him out of water. He needs to swim to the shore, regardless of the fault.

If you take a proper approach to communicating with your teens, you can help them avoid over reliance on “It's not my fault.”

22、   Researchers from the University of Bath have developed motion capture technology that enables you to digitize(数字化)your dog with only one camera. The software could be used for a wide range of purposes, from helping vets diagnose lameness(跛)and monitoring recovery of their dog patients, to behavior supervision.

The University of Bath's motion capture research centre digitised the movement of 14 different breeds of dogs. Wearing special doggie motion capture suits with markers, the dogs were filmed under the supervision of scientists doing a range of movements. They used these data to create a computer model that can accurately predict and copy the poses of dogs when they re filmed without wearing the motion capture suits. This model allows 3D digital information for new dogs-their shape and movement-to be captured without markers and expensive equipment, but using a single RGBD camera instead.

The researcher Kearney said, “This is the first time RGBD images have been used to track the motion of dogs using a single camera, which is much more affordable than traditional motion capture systems that require multiple cameras. This technology allows us to study the movement of animals, which is useful for applications such as detecting lameness in a dog and measuring its recovery over time.”

The team has also started testing their method on digital images of other four-legged animals including horses, cats, lions and gorillas, with some promising results. They aim in the future to extend their animal dataset to make the results more accurate;they will also be making the dataset available for non-commercial use by others. “Our research is a step towards building accurate 3D models of animal motion along with technologies that allow us to very easily measure their movement.” said Kearney.

【1】What is special about the new software mentioned in Para 1?

A.It equips your dog with a motion capture suit.

B.It can be useful for pets to behave themselves.

C.It helps you monitor dogs using only one camera.

D.It offers a wide range of entertainment applications.

【2】What is necessary to make sure a single RGBD camera works?

A.A special computer model must be set up in advance.

B.The dogs must wear motion capture suits without markers.

C.The dogs must be in the supervision of multiple cameras.

D.3D digital information must be sent into the cameras.

【3】What is the next step of the new technology according to Kearney?

A.To make the dataset available for more profits.

B.To make more accurate models of animal diseases.

C.To extend the animal dataset to improve its accuracy.

D.To test RGBD cameras on other four-legged animals.

【4】What's the main purpose of the passage?

C.To explain the applications of diagnosing dogs' diseases.

D.To prove the efcts of the technology on different animals.

23、Huron, Ohio, was where I’d spent my twenties, working on a steamer out on the Great Lakes. My wife and I started our family there, and later we came back to Huron to retire. Then, during the final stage of construction on our new home, I had difficulty breathing. The doctor determined I needed open-heart surgery. I was admitted to a hospital in Sandusky.

The night before my surgery, I was so worried that I couldn’t sleep. I lay in my hospital bed praying and thinking about the events in my life that had led me to this point. I remembered how I had fallen in love with Huron and its people. I remembered a Christmas many years ago…

The shipping season had been good to me, so that winter I decided to buy some Christmas gifts and help out a family in town. “I know a family that would appreciate a visit from Santa Claus,” the owner of the store said. “A woman with six children just lost her husband.”

The store owner helped me wrap some presents and gave me the family’s address. That evening I delivered the packages. A little girl with brown eyes and the sweetest smile answered the door. “Santa asked me to bring these gifts to you and your family,” I said.

The girl’s eyes lit up even more. “Tell Santa ‘thank you’ from Dorothy,” she said. I never saw her or her family again, but all in town helped give Huron a permanent place in my heart. A heart now needed fixing badly.

A nurse came in to check on me. “Where are you from?” the nurse asked. “I’m from Huron,” I told her proudly.

She smiled. “I grew up there,” she said. “I loved it, even though life wasn’t easy. You see, I lost my father when I was just a child.”

I looked into her brown eyes and knew I’d seen them before. “Do you recall a sailor bringing presents to your door one Christmas?”

She stared. “That was you!”

“Yes, Dorothy,” I said, suddenly confident about my surgery. “That was me.”

24、   Once upon a time, the colors of the world quarreled without stop.

Green said: "Clearly I am the most important. I am the sign of life and of hope. I was chosen for grass, trees and leaves. Without me, all animals would die."

Yellow smiled quietly: "You are so serious. I bring laughter, pleasure, and warmth into the world. The sun is yellow, the moon is yellow, the stars are yellow. Without me there would be no fun."

Orange started next to blow herself: "I am the color of health and strength. I may be scarce(稀有的), but I am precious for I serve the needs of human life. I carry the most important vitamins."

Red could stand it no longer, shouting out: "I am the ruler of all of you. I am blood-life's blood! I am the color of danger and of bravery. Without me, the earth would be as empty as the moon."

Indigo(靛蓝色)spoke more quietly but with just as much determination: "Think of me. I am the color of silence. You hardly notice me, but without me you all become superficial. You need me for balance and inner peace."

The colors went on boasting, each convinced of his or her own advantages. Their quarreling became louder and louder.

Suddenly there was a surprising flash of bright lightning and thunder rolled and boomed. Rain started to pour down cruelly. The colors crouched down(蹲下)in fear, drawing close to one another for comfort.

In the midst of the loud noises, rain began to speak: "You foolish colors, fighting amongst yourselves, each trying to control the rest. Don't you know that you were each made for a special purpose, unique and different? Join hands with one another and come to me." Doing as they were told, the colors united and joined hands. The rain continued: "From now on, when it rains, each of you will stretch across the sky in a great bow of color as a reminder that you can all live in peace.
