二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

I recently got pulled over for speeding not far from my new home in Virginia. I hadn’t been paying attention, and I had driven a few miles an hour over the speed limit.

“Can I see your license and registration?” the police officer asked me. I pulled both out for him, and he saw my Pittsburgh address on my Pennsylvania driver’s license.

“What are you doing here?” he asked. “Are you with the army?”

“No, I’m not.” I answered. I explained that I had just moved to Virginia, and I hadn’t had time to re-register yet.

“So what brings you here?”

He had asked a direct question. Without thinking very hard, I gave him a direct answer. “Well, officer,” I said, “since you’ve asked, I have cancer. I have just months to live. We’ve moved down here to be close to my wife’s family.”

“So you’ve got cancer,” he said flatly. He was trying to figure me out. Was I really dying? Was I lying? He took a long look at me. “You know, for a guy who has only a few months to live, you sure look good.”

He was obviously thinking: “Either this guy is pulling one big fat line on me, or he’s telling the truth.” He was trying to question my honesty without directly calling me a liar. And so he had forced me to prove that I was being honest.

“Well, officer, I know that I look pretty healthy. I look great on the outside, but the tumors are on the inside.” And then, I don’t know what possessed me, but I just did it. I pulled up my shirt, showing the operational scars.

He looked at my scars. He looked in my eyes. He now knew he was talking to a dying man. Well, he wasn’t taking this any further. He handed me back my license. “Do me a favor.” he said, “Slow down from now on.”

The awful truth had set me free. As he went back to his police car, I had a realization. I had been one of those gorgeous blondes (金发美女) who could bat her eyelashes and get out of tickets. I drove home under the speed limit, and I was smiling like a beauty queen.

22、A Photographer's Experience in Iceland

In an ice cave, the distance between you and the rich blue ice around you disappears. I walked into one such cave in southern Iceland, delicately through a tunnel of circular ice arches. 【1】 And as I looked around in wonder, I simply forgot that I existed. As I walked deeper, the tunnel closed in tighter and I could touch both sides with my extended arms. 【2】

My friends often comment with disbelief, “Aren't you cold out there?” And I have to answer, “Of course not.” 【3】 The simple fact of the matter is that I love being warm - in cold places. I love suffering the discomfort so that in return I can experience the wonderful feeling of being alive. But most of all, I love the light. The light in the Arctic (北极) is precisely the opposite of the tropical beaches. That kind of light is a photographer's dream.

I fell in love with the Arctic as it's such a mysterious and magical destination, where the photographer is forced to slow down, to see and hear the whales breaking through the sea ice, or brave the veil (面纱) of polar night. 【4】 I can just make pictures in a mere instant using my smartphone, stick it back in my pocket, and jump right back into the experience.

【5】 Fierce winds, often sustained at 40 mph, as well as downpours of cold rain are quite common there. But that's the price we pay to bring back images. Taking photographs, or even just being in the Arctic may be a challenge, but it's a unique life that few have ever experienced.

A.But that hides the truth.

B.You can experience the culture here.

C.They towered over me at roughly 6 meters high.

D.It opens up a good many amazing opportunities.

E.When shooting, I have to bear tough conditions.

F.There was already no distance between me and the ice.

G.This is where the experiences are so fascinating that a big camera is just in the way.

23、   Some 15 years ago, Ross Willard volunteered with a food program in Harrisburg Pa. He found children riding bicycles with brakes that didn't work. The retired railroad manager saw the importance of safely riding for children, so he began repairing bicycle on street corners.

Over time, more and more people came to have their bicycles repaired. Mr. Willard opened his first shop in 2007 and three years later he founded his own company Recycle Cycle Harrisburg. The all-volunteer nonprofit organization has been offering service for residents in the community. Regular visitors include children and their parents, as well as halfway house residents seeking to perform community service hours while so building their own bikes.

The organization has a do-it-yourself philosophy: Although there is no charge for any repair, or even bicycles, most visitors( except young children)are tasked with making their own repairs with the assistance of volunteer trainers.

Since its founding, Recycle Bicycle has distributed thousands of donated bikes to the Harrisburg community averaging about 900 per year in the past decade. He's known as “Mr. Bicycle, around the Pennsylvania capital. He estimates that the organization repairs some 3,000 bikes a year.

24、Nearly one year after the arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic, students across Chicago and the suburbs in the US say when it comes to high school, the thrill is gone. Simple pleasures such as getting together with friends in the hallways and catching up over lunch in the cafeteria are displaced by a dystopian (反乌托邦的) landscape of remote learning and virtual extracurricular.

After 11 months of remote learning, and what many teens describe as the soul-crushing disappointment of canceled after school activities, experts say a growing number of teens are now struggling with anxiety and depression due to heightened levels of stress and social isolation.

Still, the following stories shared by high school students from Chicago and the suburbs provide a glimmer of hope that for some, the pandemic-era heartbreak might develop a generation of resilient (有韧性的) young adults who will be better equipped to deal with life’s twists and turns.

Students who participate in speech, an activity that combines drama and public speaking, have been able to continue this school year, albeit (尽管) over the internet. Instead of delivering emotional monologues (独白) and duets (二重唱) to a live panel of judges, they must summon their best performances while looking into a webcam.

“Dueting is so frustrating when it comes to online,” said Jaylah Hogg, 17, a junior at Thornton Township High School in Harvey. “Wi-Fi at my house is pretty good but my partner’s isn’t. So it’s like I’m trying to time her lines in my head because she’s blanking out when she’s talking. Sometimes the judges do hold that against us.”

But it hasn’t been all bad. After nearly a year of remote learning, Deerfield High School freshman Ben Segall, 15, said he was excited that the school was expected to finally welcome students back into the building for a hybrid program later this month.

The pandemic has also crushed the athletic seasons for sports at many high schools including Senn High School in the Edgewater neighborhood. There, Davion Holmes is staying focused on applying to Wilberforce, Ohio-based Central State University.

And with some of the recent updates to the Illinois High School Association’s COVID-19 guidelines, Holmes said he remained hopeful, albeit realistic, about finally resuming his high school athletic career in the months ahead.

“I didn’t want to have to live through a pandemic, but I worked through it, and that’s something I’ll be able to tell my kids and grandkids someday,” he added.

【1】What is a major problem with remote learning?

A.The heavy workload.

B.The lack of social interaction.

C.The large number of students in class.

D.The high levels of stress in class.

【2】Why did Jaylah Hogg find online dueting frustrating?

A.The Wi-Fi at her house was dissatisfactory.

B.It was hard to work as a team online.

C.The judges failed to do their job well.

D.She felt nervous in front of the webcam.

【3】What does Davion Holmes think of the pandemic?

A.It allowed him to focus on applying to universities.

B.It made little difference to his athletic career.

C.It is something that has made him stronger.

D.It’s the last thing he wants to mention in the future.

【4】What’s the main purpose of the article?

A.To describe the pandemic’s influence on teens.

B.To present different views on the pandemic.

C.To call for attention to students’ mental health.

D.To encourage teens to be positive toward school life.

【5】What is the best title of the passage?

A.Athletic Career

B.Monologues and Duets

C.Best Performances

D.Adapting to Change
