二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、Today, I’ve been recording an audiobook. I am excited that I have realized my life-long dream.

I will never forget at primary school I used to wait with breathless anticipation to take my turn reading out a paragraph of great works in front. At my secondary school, when students were encouraged to select and present a reading at “morning talk”, I often added my name to the list.

This was all handy background for my career in broadcasting. But, much as I enjoy hosting shows and interviewing people, I often find myself missing the simple pleasures of reading out loud. I’d thought about putting myself forward as a narrator(朗读者) for audiobooks. But I’m not an actor. I can’t do regional accents or play female voice. Non-fiction, then, seemed the obvious target, but I felt that such books were best read by their authors. If it were authors’ own voice, their stories would touch me.

Recently, delivering my son’s nightly bedtime story has reawakened my love for reading out loud—highlights so far have included Charlotte’s Web. But I never thought I’d get the opportunity to do it professionally.

Then, last month, I was contacted by James Plunkett, author of End State, a forthcoming book about political ideas. He had no desire to read his book out loud, but as a fan of my program, he thought I might do a reasonable job.

So, I’ve spent this week in a studio, simply reading stuff out loud. And I’m LOVING IT!

Mind you, it’s an entirely unexpected experience. It’s disheartening when the recording needs to be stopped because I’ve just carelessly skipped over a ‘ the’, or had to clear my throat, or catch my breath. I’ve also learned how many words I’ve been mispronouncing my entire life: behavioral is BE-HAYVE-YOU-RAL, not BE-HAYVE-EE-AH-RUL.

Though tackling this 339-page book doesn’t turn out to be that easy, I’ve found the whole process awesome, and hope this becomes the first of many.

22、GRODNO, Belarus—The temperature is close to zero in the evening. Several young refugees are washing their hair with cold water by the fire, helping each other trim beards to look better in front of the camera during interviews. At the border between Belarus and Poland, in a forest far from settlements of both countries, many refugees longing for entering Germany and other rich European Union(EU) countries, who are stranded, are struggling in the cold winter with uncertain future prospects.

On the side of the barbed wire stretching for hundreds of meters along the border, children are chasing each other around camping tents and shelters—which are built with branches of trees and dry grass and swaying in freezing winds—laughing. while adults are not so blessed, though.

Two middle-aged men lifted the trunk of a log and then released it to chop the wood by gravity. Making a fire with wood is the only way to keep warm for these people in the harsh winter. Several other refugees are heating a 500 ml thermos on the fire, waiting for a sip of hot water. A father is taking his four-month-old baby to the food tent.

Since earlier this month. thousands of refugees from the Middle East and other regions have arrived at the Belarusian side of the border in an attempt to enter Poland and then Germany to seek asylum. With the increasing number of refugees, Poland has intensified presence of police and border guards to prevent them from entering the country.

The weather is getting colder and people are starting to fall sick, said an Iraqi Kurdish high school math teacher calling himself Karzan, whose family raised 1,000 U.S. dollars to support him to seek asylum in Germany as life in his hometown had become too difficult.

According to Karzan, the intermediary company promised that he would be able to cross the border of Germany three days after arriving in Belarus. He was promised: “Tomorrow the border will open at 3 o'clock in the afternoon, and you can go to Poland and then to Germany. The government promised.”

After checking with Belarusian border guards, the reporter got the answer: "The refugees do not know where this news came from, but rumors are in the air.”

Expressing concern over the current migrant crisis, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said earlier that the Western policy toward the Middle East and North Africa had led to the tensions.

A.To cut the wood to make a fire.

B.To clear the way to the border.

【2】What does the underlined word “intensified” in paragraph 4 mean?

A.Inspected.

B.Influenced.

D.Increased.

【3】What may we infer about Karzan?

A.He came to the border with his family members.

C.He might be cheated by the intermediary company.

D.He raised 1,000 U.S. dollars with his friends' help.

D.Refugees at Belarus-Poland border are hopefully waiting in cold winter

23、   When we sleep, our brains clear out the memories we've made while we're awake, deciding what to keep and what to discard. Forgetting is an active process, explained the authors of a study published in the journal Science. But less is known about this process during the different stages of sleep.

The team found that during the rapid eye movement (REM) sleep stage, when active sleep happens and we are thought to dream, special nerve(神经)cells appear to actively lead to forgetting. What are known as MCH neurons(神经元)sit in the hypothalamus ——a part of the brain which helps with a range of functions such as sleep, appetite and emotions. Past research has suggested these cells help to control REM sleep patterns.

The team looked at MCH neurons in mice, and found 52.8 percent were active during REM sleep, compared with 35 percent when the mice were awake. They also turned MCH neurons on and off during memory tests. MCH cells appeared to send messages to the part of the brain to stop the formation of memories.

Study co-author Thomas Kilduff said the team was surprised to find that mice performed better on learning and memory tasks when the MCH cells were inhibited(受抑制).“This result suggests that stimulation of the MCH neurons may disturb memory strengthening - that is, MCH neurons may help forgetting," Kilduff explained.

Asked what motivated the study, Kilduff said, "There is research argument about the role of sleep-in learning and memory, specifically, whether REM sleep, slow-wave sleep or both types of sleep are important for memory strengthening."

Kilduff acknowledged the study was conducted only on mice, not on humans. Also, mice are animals that remain active at night, with periods of sleeping and being awake distributed throughout the day and night, whereas most humans have a single sleep period that usually occurs at night, he said.

【1】What does the underlined word “discard" in Paragraph 1 mean?

A.Get rid of.

B.Bring in.

C.Make use of.

D.Dream about.

【2】What can we learn about MCH neurons in mice during REM sleep?

A.All of them are active.

B.Over half of them are functioning.

C.Most of them can control emotions.

D.35 percent of them can refresh memories.

【3】What did Kilduff think of the result of the study?

A.It was highly questioned.

B.It helps explain dreams.

C.It could apply to all people.

D.It was limited in some way.

【4】In which section of a newspaper may this text appear?

A.Entertainment.

B.Sports.

C.Tech and Science.

D.Culture.

24、It’s well-known that being in green spaces is good for physical and mental health. 【1】 A population-based study published in Scientific Reports looked at the effect of urban waterways on mental health and found that proximity (接近) to water increased positive feelings of wellbeing.

“If you’re in a body of water, your internal state just becomes calm,” Dr Natalie Azar, NBC News medical contributor, told TODAY. “【2】 However, we’ve never really been intentional about it.”

Being near water gives people a consciousness of something greater than themselves. The sounds and movement of water can get people to focus their attention and this invites calm. “You don’t have to go to the coast to experience this wellbeing,” said Azar. “Any waterway will do, including lakes, rivers, canals or ponds. 【3】

A new study conducted by King’s College London has also proved that spending time near urban canals and rivers is linked to feeling happy and healthy, stressed a press release from the college. Moreover, it has found that urban waterways are superior to feelings of wellbeing than just being near the ocean.

【4】 This means their capacity to improve mental wellbeing is likely to be due to the multiple benefits associated with both green and blue spaces,” said Andrea Mechelli, professor of early intervention in mental health at King’s College London.

The study has also found that there are continuous improvements to mental wellbeing for up to 24 hours after visiting urban waterways. 【5】 In England and Wales, people have access to 3,218 kilometers of rivers and canals that are readily accessible. In fact, 9 million people live within 1 km of a canal—something that is easily walkable.

A.These results remain to be tested.

B.Even a flowing fountain will work.

C.This is good news for urban people.

D.It’s something that I think we’ve all experienced.

E.Our findings show that blue spaces are naturally calming.

F.Canals and rivers contain not only water but also trees and other plants.

G.Now scientists have discovered blue spaces are also connected to better mental health.
