21、On March 9, 2022, two manatees(海牛)arrived at the Aquarium’s off-site Animal Care Facility from SeaWorld Orlando for ongoing care until they are healthy enough for release back into the wild.

The orphaned young manatees, an approximately 160-pound male and 175-pound female, were rescued in December and have received rehabilitative(康复的) care at SeaWorld Orlando since then. The female was only 124 pounds when she was found suffering from cold stress in Blue Springs, Florida. The male was found near a Fort St. John, Florida power plant with a deceased female, most likely his mother, and was only 126 pounds. The two are now stable and have moved to the next phase of their recovery.

In 2021, 1,101 manatees died, primarily from starvation due to loss of seagrass in the Indian River Lagoon, a result of pollution and ongoing water quality issues. As of March 2022, over 400 manatees have already died. Other challenges manatees face include cold stress and boat strikes.

The MRP is a cooperative group of communities dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, release, and monitoring of manatees. As part of this partnership, Georgia Aquarium designated additional rehabilitation areas at its Animal Care Facility, which offers new life support systems, access to medical care and monitoring, and large enough space. This facility is an additional recovery care space for manatees until they are healthy enough for release, and   for other animals in need of rehabilitation or quarantine(隔离). The manatees being cared for by Georgia Aquarium will not be on display to the public.

Vice president of zoological operations at Georgia Aquarium, Eric Gaglione, explained the Aquarium’s involvement with manatees, “Georgia Aquarium has been involved in manatee research and health assessments for several years, but this is the first time we have manatees under our care. We are honored to join our colleagues in the Manatee Rescue and Rehabilitation Partnership and give these two orphaned manatees a fighting chance. Manatees are in crisis, and it is our role as a responsible aquarium(水族馆) to do everything we can to change their fate in the wild.”

Once the manatees have reached sufficient size and become healthy enough to survive on their own, they will be returned to the care facility at SenWorld Orlando before being released back into the wild.

22、It was the final soccer game of the year. I was excited because I love playing soccer, but I was also sad to see the season end. My friend Amanda played on my team. She had worked hard in practice, but she had not scored in a game all season. We had one last chance to change that.

The game started out fast. Players from both teams crowded around the ball as it moved up and down the field. After a few minutes, one of our players burst out of the crowd of players like a piece of overheated popcorn bursting from a pan. She sped down the field toward the other team’s goal, keeping the ball in front of her. With a speedy kick, she sent the ball through the air and toward the goal. The goalkeeper reached to block the shot, but the ball soared(高飞)past her hand.

Our team had scored first, and we let out a cheer.

Our cheering did not last long, though. The opposing team, like a sleeping creature that has been awakened, came quickly to life. Their players rushed down the field, keeping the ball out of the reach of our players. In no time they scored a goal, tying the game.

The players on our team looked worried. Winning this game was important to us, but it seemed just as important to the other team. An opposing player almost scored another goal, but we blocked the net so the ball could not go in. After that, the game stayed tied for a long time.

With less than a minute left in the game, I was able to get the ball and pass it to Amanda. She looked nervous at first, but then she began to move toward the goal. Stopping quickly, she kicked the ball as hard as she could. It flew through the air, past two players from the opposing team, and right into the net! Our team let out another cheer. A few seconds later, the game ended.

Amanda had scored her first goal, and we had won the game. Her effort all season had finally paid off. The whole team gathered around her joyfully.

“Thanks, Julie,” Amanda said to me with a smile.

“No problem,” I replied as we walked off the field. “You earned it!”

23、Time for Kids (TFK) gets the great news on the coolest toys for 2014 at the 111th American International Toy Fair.

What’s four days long, bigger than seven football fields, and filled with thousands of toys? It’s Toy Fair 2014!

Each year, hundreds of toy companies from across the country come together in New York City. All kinds of products are shown as a way to know what’s to come in the new year. This year’s trends (款式) include oversize toys. “In 2014, everything is really big and really out there,” says Adrienne Appell, a toy-trends expert.

Toy Fair is the largest toy trade show in the Western Hemisphere (西半球). Toy-store buyers go to the event to decide which toys they may want to sell during the holiday season. Members of the media, like TFK, go to the fair to report back on all the cool trends. Unfortunately, Toy Fair is not open to the public.

This year’s Toy Fair was the biggest in its 111-year history. More than 1,000 toy companies showed products from simple card games to high-tech robots. “Larger Than Life” was a Toy Fair favorite. This trend is all about big toys with a big play value.

Though it is all fun and games at Toy Fair, we saw lots of products making a push towards education, with STEAM. That stands for science, technology, engineering, art, and math. This trend includes word games. And of course, we saw some super cool, high-tech games. “Technology is always going to influence toys,” says Appell. “This year we saw lots of 3D games, and robots.”

24、   After exactly a year of staying at home, we have adapted to socializing digitally, in short bursts of time.Remember in Before Times you could head to the gym after work and then get dressed for dinner and a night out? The pandemic(疫情) has changed this. Our social batteries have run out of charge. It's been a long time since we had to perform our social role for an extended period.

For 23-year-old Hafsa, the excitement of her friends and family to restart their social lives has left her astonished. “ At the minute my parents are planning a trip abroad and I keep postponing getting back to them with a date,” she explains. “They don't know it's because of all of this. Just the thought of being in a room full of people is scary, it's like going back to school.”

Heather Garbutt, psychotherapist of the Counselling & Psychotherapy Centre says communication is key to recharging your unused social battery. “Take it slowly and don't immediately organize a large get-together,” she advises. “Go for a walk with somebody for no more than half an hour and gently get used to being with people again. It may actually be a shock to our system which has been shut down to some degree to cope with absence. We may have that longing to be with others, but that doesn't mean we are free from anxiety. It would be good to start off with a conversation about what it's going to be like when you are all together again.”

She says finding some causal topics to discuss also works. Acknowledge that many of you may feel a bit awkward after being physically apart for so long. It's a bit like learning to walk again after you've broken a limb. It may all be off-balance to begin with but you will find a new steadiness with practice. Whatever happens post-pandemic, your loved ones can't judge if you want to take it easy and not engage in the festivities immediately. We are recovering from a post-pandemic stress disorder, after all.

四、书面表达(共1题,共 5分)

26、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

Tucker stood by the back door and considered the winter sky: ice blue and not a single cloud. His breath made steamy circles in the air.

“I don’t think today’s the day, Tuck. We have to wait for the snow.” His father walked up beside him and looked outside. Then he walked off toward the basement door.

Tucker looked across the backyard of his family’s new house. Just beyond some pine trees, the flat ground pushed upward into a steep and empty hillside. Dad had promised that the hill would be perfect for sledding.

Tucker’s brand-new sled (雪橇板) rested in the corner of his room, sandwiched between his dresser and train table. It was perfect. He was sure it would be superfast. If only it would snow.

Tucker kicked gently at the door, then turned and went to look for his elder brother. Paul was in his usual spot, controller in hand, working his way through a video game.

“Hi, Paul.” Tucker sat down beside his brother. No response. “I said, ‘Hi!’” He tried speaking louder this time. “Sorry, Tuck. I’m at level ten. Later, OK?” Paul’s eyes remained glued to the screen. Tucker sighed and got up.

Tucker went down to the basement and found his father surrounded by piles of flattened cardboard (硬纸板) boxes. “Can you play knights (骑士) with me, Dad?” Tucker asked. His father looked over the wall of boxes and told him he had promised to get all these boxes broken down and ready for recycling. Tucker sighed. Suddenly, he got an idea.

Dad, can I have some boxes and some duct tape (胶带)?” Tucker asked. His father smiled, grabbed the duct tape and tossed (扔) it to Tucker. “Have fun.”

Despite the cold, Tucker was sweating from carrying a mountain of cardboard into the backyard.

Paul appeared and asked, “What are you up to?” “Oh, good. I need help cutting the duct tape.” Tucker threw the sticky silver tape roll to his brother.

An hour later, Tucker and Paul stood, with a cardboard sled, on top of the hill under the fading January sun.

Para 1: “Do you think it will work?” Paul asked as he handed Tucker his sled.
