二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、On March 9, 2022, two manatees(海牛)arrived at the Aquarium’s off-site Animal Care Facility from SeaWorld Orlando for ongoing care until they are healthy enough for release back into the wild.

The orphaned young manatees, an approximately 160-pound male and 175-pound female, were rescued in December and have received rehabilitative(康复的) care at SeaWorld Orlando since then. The female was only 124 pounds when she was found suffering from cold stress in Blue Springs, Florida. The male was found near a Fort St. John, Florida power plant with a deceased female, most likely his mother, and was only 126 pounds. The two are now stable and have moved to the next phase of their recovery.

In 2021, 1,101 manatees died, primarily from starvation due to loss of seagrass in the Indian River Lagoon, a result of pollution and ongoing water quality issues. As of March 2022, over 400 manatees have already died. Other challenges manatees face include cold stress and boat strikes.

The MRP is a cooperative group of communities dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, release, and monitoring of manatees. As part of this partnership, Georgia Aquarium designated additional rehabilitation areas at its Animal Care Facility, which offers new life support systems, access to medical care and monitoring, and large enough space. This facility is an additional recovery care space for manatees until they are healthy enough for release, and   for other animals in need of rehabilitation or quarantine(隔离). The manatees being cared for by Georgia Aquarium will not be on display to the public.

Vice president of zoological operations at Georgia Aquarium, Eric Gaglione, explained the Aquarium’s involvement with manatees, “Georgia Aquarium has been involved in manatee research and health assessments for several years, but this is the first time we have manatees under our care. We are honored to join our colleagues in the Manatee Rescue and Rehabilitation Partnership and give these two orphaned manatees a fighting chance. Manatees are in crisis, and it is our role as a responsible aquarium(水族馆) to do everything we can to change their fate in the wild.”

Once the manatees have reached sufficient size and become healthy enough to survive on their own, they will be returned to the care facility at SenWorld Orlando before being released back into the wild.

23、On a Friday evening in December, two weeks before Christmas, I lost my job. I hadn’t seen it coming. I was excited for the weekend, when my daughter, Kristil, then 12, and I planned to get our Christmas tree. Then I listened to my voicemail: “We’re sorry but your work assignment has ended as of today.”My heart sank. I wasn’t just a single mother; I was the only parent. My paycheck was survival.

Over the next week, as my bank account grew smaller, I crazily applied for jobs, but I was defeated.

It had been snowing on and off all morning. I noticed a woman with short white hair struggling to open her car door against the wind. As she got out, I realized it was my old professor, Mrs. Heffernan. I hadn’t seen her since we’d met for lunch three months ago.

I’d first met Mrs. Heffernan 10 years earlier when I was her student at Edge wood College. Kristil was 3 at the time, and I sometimes took her to class. Mrs. Heffernan was understanding and would bring coloring books to occupy Kristil.

Even after I graduated, Mrs. Heffernan kept in touch. I had grown to love her like family.

I rushed to the front of my building. “What are you doing out in this weather?” I asked as we hugged.

“Well, I tried to call last week but couldn’t get through. Then I called your job and they said you weren’t working there anymore, so I thought I would come by,” she said. “I have gifts for you and Kristil. ”

I made her a cup of tea and we talked. Just being in Mrs. Heffernan’s presence gave me hope that things would be all right.

As she got up to leave she handed me a Christmas card and kissed me on the cheek. I walked her to her car and waved as she pulled away.

When I opened her card I was in shock. Hundred dollar bills fell onto the table. Tears of gratitude filled my eyes as I counted. Mrs. Heffernan had given me $1,000.

【1】What can we learn about the author from the first paragraph?

A.She was divorcing her husband.

B.She was fired unexpectedly.

C.She sent an e-mail.

D.She couldn’t afford a Christmas tree.

【2】What was Heffernan’s real purpose of visiting the author?

A.To have a talk with her.

B.To wish her a merry Christmas.

C.To offer her some financial help.

D.To give her daughter coloring books.

【3】What role might Mrs. Heffernan play in the author’s life after graduation?

A.A life advisor.

B.A respectable friend.

C.A helpful consultant.

D.A professional expert.

【4】Which words can best describe Mrs. Heffernan?

A.Friendly and confident.

B.Wealthy and optimistic.

C.Warm-hearted and brave.

D.Kind-hearted and generous.

24、   We all regard receiving presents as a pleasant experience and yet it can be one of the most awkward situations. It is often difficult to look pleased when you receive a gift which is entirely useless or the wrong size.【1】 However, you have no right to change an article purchased just because it does not fit or is not to your taste. Worse still, the agreement on the sale is between the person who bought it and the shop.

So you will have to tell your favorite aunt that the T-shirt does not fit. But an exchange is not always that simple because there has to be a good reason for it. 【2】 For example, if the buyer was told that a switch was voice-operated and later found out it was not, then action could be taken. You would have the right to return it and get the money back.

But if you are returning something, no matter what the reason is, you will be expected to have proof of purchase. If the receipt cannot be found, then it is possible to use another proof of purchase such as a credit card receipt. 【3】

Many big stores have a much more tolerant policy towards returns and see it as a gesture of goodwill to exchange goods without question. Stores including Marks & Spencer are well known for their “no argument” policy on returned goods. 【4】

So if a shop refuses to exchange the goods or to offer a refund, the seller is likely to be within his legal rights unless there is something wrong with the goods. In that case, the boot is on the other foot. You have every right to demand a cash refund or a replacement, but only if you have returned it within a “reasonable” time.

【5】 Some shops and stores expect things to be returned within a week of purchase, while others may permit a much longer time limit. In any case if you return a thing after what is considered a “reasonable” time, then all you are legally entitled to is the cost of repair.

A.You should make clear what your legal position is before returning goods to the shops.

B.Unfortunately, the law does not explain what is meant by “reasonable”.

C.If all of these have been lost, you may have to rely on a witness.

D.All you can do is exchange it after your friend or relative has gone home.

E.It is unlike anything you would buy for yourself.

F.However, shoppers should remember this is a privilege, not a right.

G.Either the thing has to be broken or unsuitable for the job it was intended to do.
