二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、Young children from poor families are more likely to consume junk food and fizzy drinks(汽水) than their richer companions. A study of 1,800 four- and five-year-olds found more than half of those from poor backgrounds drank at least one a week, compared to just four in ten oofy kids. They also drank less milk and consumed more fruit juice which is also linked to child obesity (肥胖) caused by high sugar intake(摄取量).

The phenomenon also relates to children who spend more than two hours a day in front of a TV or playing computer games—whatever their social circumstances. A companion study also found children from poor families were more likely to eat chips, sweets and chocolate. Professor Kate Storey said, “when you are looking at that age group, and such a large percentage of very young kids in the study are consuming a large amount of soda(苏打汽水),it is quite concerning.

The researchers carried out the study by surveying the parents of their participants to find out their dietary habits. Professor Storey said, “If you are drinking a lot of soda and fruit juice, they can displace(取代)consumption of water and milk, which are important not just for ending thirst, but for developing healthy bones and teeth, and health and wellness in general.”

Co-researcher Dr John Spence said, “Dietary behavior and intake patterns are influenced heavily by what happens in the first few years with children, and they maintain those patterns throughout childhood and into adolescence(青少年时期).” In addition to basic health education, this study identifies a need in how we are dealing with poverty and recognizing there is more to poverty than simply the number of dollars people have.

Professor Storey said that shows how education can make a difference and lead to healthier eating habits, regardless of what is happening at home. “Many families live in places that might not be very healthy for them and, as a result, they make unhealthy food choices. You can start making a difference in different places. It calls for action in multiple settings, schools and communities, for example. That light-bulb moment can happen in a variety of places,” Professor Storey added.

22、   London Fashion Week will not feature any animal fur clothes or accessories(配饰) on the runway this year, making it the first fur-free major fashion week.

In a statement, the BFC said: "The BFC survey results reflect a cultural change not only based on ideals and choices made by designer businesses, international brands as well as consumer feeling but also encouraged by the attitude of multi-brand stores who are moving away from selling fur.”

There is increasing pressure from anti-fur protesters(抗议者) to ban fur or boycott designers that use the material. During last year's London Fashion Week, there were 250 anti-fur protesters, The Guardian reported, and a show in February saw an activist storm the stage at a Mary Katrantzou show. Following the incident, Mary Katrantzou's team made a statement insisting that the collection was animal fur-free and “only man-made fur was used.”

Ahead of this year's fashion week, set to take place from September 14 to 18, an open letter written by singer Paloma Faith and published by Peta also called for a ban of animal fur.

The letter read: “The BFC shouldn't be approving a material whose production is considered so cruel that it is outlawed in the UK. With the vast number of cutting- edge, eco-friendly man-made furs available on the market today, I'm sure you'll agree that there's no longer any excuse for killing animals for their fur.”

London Fashion Week's fur-free runway follows a similar policy recently adopted by Burberry Design to end the use of fur including rabbit, fox, mink, racoon, and angora wool, as is confirmed by Burberry CEO Marco Gobbetti in an interview with Business of Fashion.

The BFC's news has been met with support from people on social media, who have applauded the designers choosing to give up the use of animal fur.

“I am so excited that fur has been banned from London Fashion Week! Progress!” Faith wrote on Twitter.

Another said: “London Fashion Week is ditching fur and leading the way towards a fur-free future in fashion.”

A.To compare the two fashion shows.

B.To prove Mary Katrantzou was wronged.

C.To show pressure from anti-fur protesters.

D.To indicate the popularity of London Fashion Show.

2Why does Paloma Faith think there is no excuse for killing animals for their fur?

A.It is expensive to kill animals for fur.

B.BFC has banned the use of animal fur.

C.Production of animal fur is illegal in the world.

D.Good Man-made furs are available on the market.

3What's the ordinary people's attitude towards the first fur-free major fashion week ?

23、From Now on, Stop Wasting Food

Who hasn’t felt the shame of a refrigerator clean? You paid money for your leftovers, and now you have to throw them away.

Take heart. You’re far from the only person to waste food and money. And unlike more ambitious money fixes, reducing food waste is relatively simple and sure to pay off. In fact, a person could save about $370 annually on average by wasting less food. 【1】 . Most food we throw away ends up in landfills, which release harmful gas. Less waste, less gas.

So make this the year you don’t have to come eye-to-eye with another rotting food. Here’s how to waste less food:

【2】

“Get a reality check on what’s going to waste in your fridge,” says Cassie, program manager at Stop Waste Organization. Evaluate and remove all items that are spoiled. 【3】 , rather than feel bad about it. “Ask yourself, ‘Why am I throwing this food away?’ ” she says.

Did you buy an ingredient you never used? 【4】 . Did you forget about leftovers or produce that’s gone bad? Stop Waste Organization recommends designating part of the fridge to food that’s quick to spoil. Label that section with an “Eat This First” sign.

Store foods to last

【5】 . Google “how to store produce” and you’ll learn that some foods should be refrigerated (kiwis, cucumbers), while others shouldn’t (bananas, avocados). And some fruits, like apples, release a gas that ripens other produce faster.

A.Try to learn from the waste

B.Start with a fridge cleanout

C.Purchase less and save more money

D.Reducing food waste also helps the planet

E.More planning before shopping could help

F.You bought the right groceries and now make sure they stay fresh

G.Remember to store all foods in the refrigerator to help them last longer

24、The most important life lesson I’ve learned from running is to run at my own pace. This lesson has guided me in many ways. In particular, it made me challenge the fixed expectations of retirement and aging.

Running is a metaphor (隐喻) for life. I realized this while training for a marathon to celebrate my 60th birthday. All the other runners being faster than me made me embarrassed, but my coach shared some valuable advice: run at your own best pace — setting a goal or target time could be a limitation. He was right. Over time I ran more easily and faster. I also enjoyed the experience much more.

I have applied this principle to other areas of my life. Finding a rhythm is not about efficiency or how many things I can get done in a day. It has more to do with what I decide to do at this stage in my life. Running carries its own set of expectations, including what people at certain life stage should be doing or not doing. Expectations at my age can center on how leisure time is spent, decisions about employment, and even the role of a grandparent.

I used to think it was young people who bore the impact of peer pressure, but older adults can experience it too. This is ironic, because often later in this life is a time when we tend to care less about the opinions of others.

I’m not suggesting we postpone dreams. Of course, we should do what matters to us, but it’s easy to view retirement as another occupation with benchmarks (基准) to be met. It’s a comparison trap that makes what someone else does the reference point.

Forget what others are doing. Their pace is not necessarily the pace you should run at. Run at your own way. Our bodies know what they need. Our hearts know what they need. In living life on our own terms, we will likely feel stronger in body, mind and spirit.

【1】What motivated the author to participate in marathon?

A.Her eager interest in running.

B.Her strong curiosity for marathon.

C.Her keen wish to celebrate her birthday.

D.Her urgent need to enhance her strength.

【2】What do the underlined words “this principle” in paragraph 3 probably refer to?

A.Setting a target time.

B.Finding your limitation.

C.Challenging fixed idcas.

D.Running at your own pace.

【3】How does the author feel about being retired?

A.Nervous.

B.Confused.

C.Optimistic.

D.Grateful.

【4】What can we know about the author?

A.She benefits from the coach’s words.

B.She used to be a professional runner.

C.She sees the value of a reference point.

D.She’s suffering a lot from peer pressure.
