二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、Song Lam, or Waiata to some of her New Zealand Maori friends, argues that Mandarin and Maori have much in common, particularly the five vowels(元音) which sound the same in both languages. And the mythological(神话) figure Maui of Maori legend has a Chinese “twin brother”, the Monkey King. Both could turn themselves into any shape or figure at any time.

Some academics claim that one of the native tribes in Taiwan, China speaks a language similar to Maori, notably in the naming of numbers. Evidence gleaned by archaeologists(考古学家) shows an ancient link between the peoples of Australasia and Taiwan, with the native language of Taiwan having similarities to the prehistoric Australasian language.

Confused by Maori place names and customs when she first moved to New Zealand, Song Lam spent eight years researching and three years writing her book, The Maori of New Zealand, which is believed to be the first Chinese-language publication to include Maori words, values and customs. The 120-page book, including 10 pages of photos and maps, descbribes Maori legends, traditions, history and folk tales.

Song Lam was inspired to write the book in 1990 when she tried to sign up for an education course in New Zealand and was asked for her comments on a local historical event, which she knew nothing about. She involved her two sons in her project and research after explaining to them the stories behind Maori place names. The younger boy, aged 10, used his skill at drawing to contribute an historic map of Maori tribes in New Zealand.

“Both Chinese and Maori like to present a gift when visiting others or receiving warm reception,” Lam says. “My book will be a good gift when I visit a Maori community.”

22、The amount of sunlight that Earth reflects back into space has decreased significantly in recent years. Whether the decline is a short-term phenomenon or yet another bad sign for Earth’s climate still has to be proved, scientists suggest.

Our planet, on average, typically reflects about 30 percent of the sunlight that shines on it. But new research strengthens previous studies suggesting that Earth’s ability to reflect light back has been declining in recent years, says Philip Goode, a scientist at Big Bear Solar Observatory in California. From 1998 to 2017, Earth’s reflectance declined by about 0.5 percent, the team reported in Geophysical Research Letters.

Using ground-based instruments at Big Bear, Goode and his colleagues measured earthshine - the light that our planet reflects to the Moon and then back to Earth - from 1998 to 2017. Because earthshine is most easily measured when the Moon is a slim crescent (新月) and the weather is clear, the team collected a mere 801 data points during those 20 years, Goode and his colleagues report.

Much of the decrease in reflectance occurred during the last three years of the two-decade period the team studied, Goode says. Previous analyses of satellite data, he and his colleagues note, suggest that the drop in reflectance came from warmer temperatures along the Pacific coasts of North and South America, which in turn reduced low-altitude cloud cover and exposed the underlying, much darker and less reflective seas.

“ Whether or not this is a long-term trend is yet to be seen, ” says Edward Schwieterman, a scientist at the University of California, Riverside. “ This strengthens the argument for collecting more data, ” he says.

Decreased cloudiness over the eastern Pacific isn’t the only thing cutting Earth’s reflectance, says Shiv Priyam Raghuraman, a scientist at Princeton University. Many studies point to a long-term decline in sea ice ( especially in the Arctic ), ice on land, and tiny pollutants called aerosols — all of which reflect sunlight back into space to cool Earth.

With ice cover declining, Earth is absorbing more radiation. The extra radiation absorbed by Earth in recent decades goes toward warming the oceans and melting more ice, which can contribute to even more warming, says Schwieterman.

Altogether, Goode and his colleagues estimate, the decline in Earth’s reflectance from 1998 to 2017 means that each square meter of our planet’s surface is absorbing, on average, an extra 0.5 watts (瓦特) of energy. For comparison, the researchers note in their study, planet-warming greenhouse gases and other human activity over the same period increased energy input to Earth’s surface by an estimated 0.6 watts of energy per square meter. That means the decline in Earth’s reflectance has, over that 20-year period, almost doubled the warming effect our planet experienced.

【1】What has happened to the sunshine that shines on the Earth according to the study?

A.It has been declining in recent years.

B.It has been absorbed much less by the Earth.

C.Its ability to come into the atmosphere has declined.

【3】What can be inferred from the passage?

A.The earth will reflect less and less sunlight in future years.

B.The melting of ice on Earth is the only reason for cutting Earth’s reflectance.

C.The energy absorbed by our planet’s surface almost doubled from 1998 to 2017.

D.Scientist may try to collect more data to study the tendency of Earth’s reflectance.

【4】What is the main idea of the text?

A.Earth is losing more ice.

B.Earth is reflecting less light.

C.Earth is becoming warmer.

D.Earth is taking in more energy.

23、It was the festive season. Mom had baked some delicious cookies. Jam tarts were always my favorite and I had enjoyed myself to excess. Moreover, the refrigerator was well-stocked with chocolates and ice-cream so I helped myself to all the goodies. That night I woke up with an unbearable toothache. No amount of aspirin could stop the pain.

When morning arrived, I had to do the unavoidable - make an appointment with the dentist. My dental appointment was at 2 pm that afternoon, which was just another four hours away. The thought was enough to kill my interest in everything else. I had butterflies in my stomach. I arrived at the dental clinic an hour before the appointment.

After registering, I walked unenthusiastically towards a chair. I did not even bother to look at the other patients. Picking up a few magazines, I tried to read to get rid of my fear and pain, but I could not concentrate. All I was aware of was a terrible pain. The sight of patients coming out from the treatment room, with large pieces of gauze sticking out from their mouths, only seemed to worsen my pain.

One of my New Year resolutions was made while I was shifting restlessly in my seat. I vowed never to taste another jam tart or take a chunky bite of chocolate in the future.

When my name was finally called, I staggered into the treatment room. I heard the dentist greeting me, but I could not bring myself to respond to his greeting. The sight of the drilling equipment and the hypodermic syringes (皮下注射器) only increased my feelings of sickness. When the dentist asked me to take my seat and then open my mouth, I felt my heart pounding very fast. I was sure that I was going to get a heart attack.

The dentist informed me that it was best to extract the tooth. I nodded and opened my mouth and tried to think of other things. The next minute or so was one of the most terrifying moments of my life. I grabbed the dentist’s hands more than once. At first, he was quite taken aback and eyed me suspiciously. Then he warned me that he would have my hands tied if I were to repeat my antics. I did not think that he was joking!

Soon the pain gave way to a soothing sensation. When the dentist told me that the pain was all over, I could hardly believe my ears. After paying for the extraction, I walked out of the clinic confidently and headed for the nearest bus stop. I swore that this would be the first and the last time I stepped into a dental clinic.

24、Some people are early risers while others can’t seem to get to bed until well after midnight. Why is this? A research team has a new finding that shows how a “switch” in the biological clocks of early risers leads them to operate on a daily cycle of about 20 hours instead of a full 24-hour cycle.

This finding from Carrie Partch and her colleagues builds on decades of research into biological clocks, which control sleeping and waking, rest and activity, body temperature, heart rate and so on.

Partch and her colleagues focus on two main clock components: an enzyme (酶) known as casein kinase 1 (CK1) and a protein (蛋白质) called PERIOD. It turns out that the timing of biological clocks is strongly influenced by the rise and fall of the PERIOD protein, and this daily change normally takes place over 24 hours. But CK1 adjusts PERIOD levels by chemically modifying the protein, thereby adjusting its stability.

What they’ve discovered is that a part of CK1 acts as a switch. When this switch functions normally, it generates a near- perfect 24-hour cycle by keeping PERIOD’s stability right. In this case, people easily and correctly match their biological clocks with the daily coming and going of daylight.

If the switch favors a faster breakdown of the protein, the daily cycle grows shorter and less tightly bound to daylight. For these early risers, it’s a constant struggle to adjust to life in a 24-hour world. On the contrary, a switch that favors a slower breakdown will lengthen the clock, causing some people to be night owls (夜猫子).

Partch’s discoveries are sure to offer a new view on how the biological clocks make us tick. She hopes they’ll result in new ways to adjust the clocks in people with sleep disorders and even the means to reset the clocks in people who regularly travel overseas or work the night shift.
