二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、   A rescue group made sure hunting dogs Herbier and Hilda were adopted as a pair since Hilda helps Herbier get around.

For more than 50 years, guide dogs have been trained to help humans with vision challenges live without boundaries and enjoy independence in their homes, offices, and the community at large. Given dogs' ability to be trained, along with their skills, it seemed unavoidable that there would be an unofficial guide dog for a blind dog.

Almost more exciting is the fact that one such set, which was abandoned together in Salem about a month ago, has found a new forever home that will allow the blind dog and his caretaker dog to remain together.

A little more than a month ago, someone abandoned three dogs over the fence of a local gentleman who formerly rescued greyhounds. The man no longer rescues the little dogs of being long of body, short of leg and droopy of ears, but he did know to take them to the Marion County Dog Services shelter.

The county shelter knew immediately to contact Diane Young at Salem Dogs, a local dog rescue known for being heavy on love and affection that the county most likely has on speed dial.

The rescue director responded in time, taking in the two of the dogs. One black male was healthy and passed tests quickly and easily. He was put up for adoption at the shelter and was quickly accepted.

The other two are between the ages of 4 and 5, required a bit more care. Hilda, a long-haired, black-dappled female, was obviously connected to Herbier, a light-brown, smooth-coated brown greyhound who had vision problems.

1What can we learn about the abandoned dogs?

A.They have been trained for their ability and skills.

B.The three dogs were abandoned because they are blind.

C.They are finally adopted to live with the man who found them.

D.The dog Hilda offers to help the blind dog Herbier get around.

2What does the underlined word “greyhounds” in Paragraph 4 refer to?

A.Cows who have lost their babies. B.Dogs who are abandoned by their owners.

C.Humans who become old and lonely. D.Chickens which are living with their mom.

3What can we infer from this text?

A.The touching story of two dogs helping each other happened one month ago.

B.Humans began to train dogs for the ability and skills of guidance five years ago.

C.The two abandoned dogs are still living together at the shelter today.

D.The two dogs were abandoned most probably because they were blind.

4What is the text mainly about?

A.A moving story about two dogs. B.The Marion County Dog Services shelter.

C.A dog and a blind dog were trained. D.Two dogs were abandoned by a man.

22、Museums can be overwhelming. With thousands of pieces there, how do you know which to focus on? And once you see a piece you like, how do you interact with it? Here is some advice on how to have a meaningful connection when you look at art.

Get up close and personal.【1】 Therefore, take your time to observe qualities about a work that may not come through on a computer screen. That includes its look and the feel of its surface, the marks made by the brush and the path your eyes take when viewing the work.

Stand back. Next, take a few steps back, stand in the center — and observe what’s happening in the big picture. What’s going on in the piece? 【2】 What are they doing? How are they related?

Look at it from an angle. Then try looking at an artwork from its sides, because you might catch something you might not have seen straight on. If it’s something like The Ambassadors by Holbein at The National Gallery in London, if you stand to the side, you’ll see something that from front on looks very different. 【3】 That’s called anamorphic art.

Move your body. If you’re looking at a painting, you can take a finger to the air and trace the outline of the figure or the movement of the brushstrokes. 【4】 This can help you see and feel what it might be like to make this artwork from the artist’s perspective.

Consider the subject of the art. That can have a profound effect on how you feel about the work-and perhaps you can learn something from it. Take the example of Andrew Wyeth’s famous painting, Christina’s World, which depicts (描绘) a girl with a muscle disease crawling across a field to get to her home in the distance. The painting personifies (体现) determination.【5】

A.So just keep an open mind.

B.What have they gone through?

C.When you stand to the side, it changes.

D.How are the figures in the piece arranged?

E.We have the luxury of seeing the real thing at a museum.

F.When looking at sculptures, try the poses with your body.

G.It can in a way relieve your stress to know we have this inner strength.

23、This summer we witnessed interview teams at the North Pole wearing short sleeve shirts due to the warm weather. A study published on Aug 29 revealed more concerning issues in the supposedly coldest area of the world. Zombie ice from a massive Greenland ice sheet was confirmed to be melting, which would eventually raise global sea levels by at least 10 inches (27 centimeters) on its own, reported Associated Press (AP).

Zombie ice is the kind of ice that is still attached to thicker areas of ice, but is no longer getting fed by larger glaciers. Since glaciers are getting less snow to complement the amount of ice melted, once the zombie ice is melted, it cannot be re-formed.

Scientists decided to look at the balance of the ice. In perfect equilibrium (平衡), snow in the mountains of Greenland flows down and thickens the sides of glaciers, balancing out what’s melting on the edges, according to AP. But in the last few decades, there is less refill and more melting, creating an imbalance.

Study co-author William Colgan told AP that 3.3 percent of Greenland’s total ice volume will melt eventually. “Starving would be a good phrase for what’s happening to the ice”, Colgan added.

With a great number of natural resources buried under the earth, areas of melted ice revealed treasures that attracted the world’s richest men. According to CNN, in early August, there was a “treasure hunt” in Greenland. Billionaires, including Bill Gates and others, financially backed KoBold Metals, a US-based mineral exploration company, to explore the rare metals under the glaciers in Greenland. The company told CNN that since there were enough minerals to power hundreds of millions of electric vehicles, the critical resource is capable of powering the green energy transition. While investors are taking advantage of global warming, experts feared that the mineral exploration is likely to worsen the local environment, draining up the world’s resources at a faster rate.

【1】According to the text, what can we infer about zombie ice?

A.It’s complemented by nearby glaciers.

B.It will melt away from the ice cap.

C.It’s independent from large glaciers.

D.It has increased by up to 10 inches.

【2】What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?

A.Why more zombie ice can’t be created.

B.How zombie ice is usually formed.

C.What the melting of zombie ice can lead to.

D.How zombie ice functions in the ecosystem.

【3】What is implied in the underlined sentence in Paragraph 4?

A.The ice has brought about starvation.

B.The ice is refilled more than before.

C.The ice is becoming gradually thinner.

D.The ice has been good to skate on.

【4】How did the experts feel about the “treasure hunt” in Greenland?

A.Supportive.

B.Tolerant.

C.Indifferent.

D.Worried.

24、   Beatrice Finkelstein, as chief of the Food Technology Section of the Life Support Systems Laboratory at Wright Patterson Air Force Base, bore responsibility for managing the nutritional needs of the astronauts. Her work in the field of space feeding was important in developing the equipment and techniques used in early space flight. Few, if any, female contributors played as important a role as she did during the early years of the U. S. crewed space program, and she deserves to be better remembered.

Finkelstein’s value to America’s space tasks went well beyond her technical contributions. She was frequently described in the popular press at the time as “the Nutritionist to the Astronauts”, as well as the proprietor or of “Bea’s Diner”, a restaurant designed to appeal to the public as a very friendly place.

In her role as nutritionist for the early space program, Finkelstein grew to know the astronauts well, as she communicated with them frequently. At times, she would step beyond her formal role as nutritionist, providing emotional and psychological support to the astronauts. On many occasions, she was one of the last people the astronauts communicated with before launch (发射), and there’s a lot of evidence that shows her friendship was a source of comfort during the stressful pre-launch activities.

The image of nutritionist Beatrice Finkelstein showed that the agencies that insured NASA’s successful space flights were staffed by smart women as well as smart men. Her role in America’s success in conquering space in the technical field of space feeding served as an example of the role women could and did play in the early space program.

【1】Why does Beatrice Finkelstein deserve to be remembered?

A.She was a really great astronaut.

B.Her astronaut team made significant achievements.

C.She bore responsibility for early space flight.

D.Her feeding work was vital in early space flight.

【2】What does the underlined word “proprietor” in Paragraph 2 mean?

A.Tutor.

B.Editor.

C.Owner.

D.Engineer.

【3】What can we infer about Beatrice Finkelstein from Paragraph 3?

A.She was also a psychologist.

B.She relieved astronauts’ pressure.

C.She communicated with astronauts after launch.

D.She cooked much nutritious food for astronauts.

【4】What is the best title for the text?

A.One Special Nutritionist

B.A Great Space Astronaut

C.The First Woman Astronaut

D.The Most Popular Nutritionist

四、书面表达(共1题,共 5分)

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Ms Hart stood in front of her class on the very first day of school and told the children a lie. Like most teachers, she looked at her students, saying that she loved them all the same, treating them all alike. And that was impossible because there in front of her, right on the third row, was a little boy named George.

Ms Hart had watched George the year before and noticed he was seldom engaged in school games, that he always wore torn dusty clothes and that he constantly needed a bath. As a whole, George was unpleasant.

When Ms Hart was required to review each child’s records, she put George’s off until last. But his file turned out a surprise. His first-grade teacher wrote, “George is a bright child with a ready augh. He is a joy to be around.”

Another teacher wrote, “George is an excellent student well-liked by his classmates, but he is troubled because his mother has a serious illness and life at home must be a struggle.” The next wrote. “George continues to work hard but his mother’s death has been hard on him. Since his father doesn’t show much interest, his home life will soon, affect him if some steps aren’t taken.”

The last record wrote, “George is silent and doesn’t show much interest in school. He doesn’t have many friends and sometimes sleeps in class. He could become a problem.”

By now Ms Hart realized the problem and Christmas was coming fast. Her children brought her presents, all in beautiful ribbon and bright paper, except for George’s, which was clumsily wrapped in the heavy, brown paper of a scissored grocery bag. Ms Hart took pains to open it in the middle of the other presents. Some of the children started to laugh when she found a toy bracelet with some of the stones missing, and a bottle that was one-quarter full of perfume. She stopped the children’s laughter when she declared how pretty the bracelet was, putting it on, and wearing some of the perfume behind the other wrist.

George stayed behind just long enough to say, “Ms Hart, today you smelled just like my mom used to.”

注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;

2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

After George left, Ms Hart decided to care for him like a mother.
