二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、   Turtles have an unfortunate habit of eating plastic objects floating in the sea. These cannot be digested and may ultimately kill them. It is widely assumed that this fondness for plastics is a matter of mistaken identity. Drifting plastic bags, for instance, look similar to jellyfish (水母), which many types of turtles love to eat. Yet lots of plastic objects that end up inside turtles have no similarity to jellyfish. Joseph Pfaller of the University of Florida therefore suspects that the smell of marine microorganisms (海洋微生物) which grow on floating plastic objects fools turtles into feeding.

The idea that the smell of floating plastic objects might lure animals to their death first emerged in 2016. Researchers at the University of California noticed that certain chemicals, notably dimethyl sulphide (二甲基硫), which are released into the air by floating plastics, are those which many seabirds sniff () to track down food. These chemicals mark good places to hunt because they indicate plenty of the algae (海藻) and bacteria (细菌). The researchers also found that birds which pursue their food in this way are five or six times more likely to eat plastic than those which do not.

Since turtles are known to break the surface periodically and sniff the air when finding the way to their feeding areas, Dr Pfaller theorised that they are following these same chemicals, and are likewise fooled into thinking that floating plastic objects are eatable.

To test that idea, he and his colleagues set up an experiment. They arranged for 15 turtles to be exposed to four smells: the vapour from deionised water; the smell of turtle-feeding balls made of shrimp and fish meal; the smell of a clean plastic bottle chopped up into ten pieces; and the smell of a similarly chopped bottle that had been kept in the ocean for five weeks to allow algae and bacteria to grow on it.

Two of the smells proved far more attractive to the animals than the others. When sniffing both the smell of food balls and that of five-week-old bottles, turtles kept their nostrils out of the water more than three times as long, and took twice as many breaths as they did when what was on offer was the smell of fresh bottle-plastic or deionised-water vapour.

Though they have not yet tested whether dimethyl sulphide is the culprit, Dr Pfaller and his colleagues think it is the most likely candidate. In an unpolluted ocean, pretty well anything which had this smell would be eatable— or, at least, harmless. Unfortunately, five-week-old plastic bottles and their like are not.

3Dr Pfaller’s research shows_______.

A.turtles prefer the smell of plastics

B.turtles live on marine microorganisms

C.dimethyl sulphide may be to blame for turtles’ death

D.plastics release the same chemicals as microorganisms

4What is the purpose of the passage?

A.To propose a new way to study turtles.

22、   Along Utah's Highway 68 in the small community of Elberta, Utah stands an industrial dome(圆屋顶). Inside is a futuristic collection of shelves, towering 25 feet tall. The dome is home to a vertical farm, which doesn't grow food for humans but for cows.

Three years ago, Lance Bateman and his three brothers agreed to be part of a pilot project that would use vertical farming to grow and feed the cows for their dairy and beef farm, Bateman Mosida Farms. Grov Technologies, an agriculture tech company in Vineyard, Utah, partnered with Batemans on the project and developed all the equipment for the vertical farm.

The brothers are now using six towers to pump out fresh wheatgrass for their herd of 20,000 cows 365 days a year. The vertical farm takes up about 857 square feet of space, but it does the work that would be required on 35 to 50 acres of land, according to Grov Technologies. Supporters claim vertical farms use 95% less water than in conventional field farming. A full harvest cycle in the Bateman's farm takes anywhere from five to seven days, starting with a tray of seeds that is carried to the top of the tower and rotated on wheels through the entire structure.

Bateman says each tower provides about 2,800 pounds of feed each day, which is only about two percent of what his cows eat in a day. His farm grows feed conventionally when it can and buys the rest. The farm is also planning to install four more towers within the next six weeks.

According to Bateman, studies conducted by Grov Technologies in 2019 found that, when the cows were fed 12-15% of the vertical farm's feed in their diets, they produced more milk or at the same pace while eating less feed overall, ultimately improving the farm's bottom line.

“A farm is an expensive venture, but I know with this facility, we can compete, especially with different climate scenarios(说明)across the world,”he says. “I believe this will make farming available in areas where it hasn't been able to happen. ”

【1】What's the purpose of the writer by writing the second paragraph?

A.To describe how the vertical farm works.

B.To value the history of the vertical farm.

C.To show the structure of the vertical farm.

D.To explain how the vertical farm came into being.

【2】What can we learn about the vertical farm according to the passage?

A.It has replaced conventional farming.

B.It needs more acres of land to work.

C.It is water-conserving and efficient.

D.It is relatively easy to maintain.

【3】How much feed is needed daily for all the cows on the farm?

A.70,000 pounds.

B.72,800 pounds.

C.140,000 pounds.

D.142,800 pounds.

【4】What is mainly implied in Bateman's words in the last paragraph?

A.Vertical farming has a promising future.

B.Vertical farming remains to be improved.

C.Competition is usually an expensive venture.

D.Farming won't happen with climate scenarios.

23、2017 was an influential year for artificial intelligence, not just in terms of the advancement of the technology itself, but also for the development of our understanding of AI’s influence on our society.

When we talk about AI, often we focus on the belief that it is going to take away certain types of jobs. However, we often ignore the fact that this technology will also slowly spread into most of our lives during work.

I refer to this as the difference between AI and IA: artificial intelligence vs. intelligence augmentation (智能增强). Despite the great steps we’ve made in AI development and will continue to make in 2018, we are still years away from AI fully replacing human jobs. However, we are much closer to seeing the influence of AI spread into almost every job and the growth in human intelligence.

Take a doctor for example: AI will soon be able to test and diagnose (诊断) common diseases more quickly and accurately than humans. Now, doctors can spend more of their time explaining the possible diagnoses, communicating with patients and developing unique, reliable treatment plans that are most effective for each specific patient.

Algorithms (算法) are desirable for their ability-to make well-informed decisions quickly and accurately, allowing us to focus on the parts of our job that are most important. But that same power allows algorithms that are making incorrect decisions to do so with greater speed and widespread influence than humans have ever had.

2018 will be the year that companies purchasing AI products don’t just ask about the predictive power of an algorithm-they will make sure that algorithms are tested in advance, greatly reducing their potential unexpected influence.

1What do most people mainly focus on AI?

A. AI can be completely controlled.

B. AI will replace certain human jobs.

C. AI is advanced technology.

D. AI will gradually spread into our lives.

2Why does the author mention the doctor?

A. To prove AI will make more doctors unemployed.

B. To prove AI always makes right decisions.

C. To prove AI will change the way we work.

D. To prove AI can make treatment plans.

3What is the author’s attitude towards AI and IA?

A. Objective.   B. Negative.

C. Optimistic.   D. Uninterested.

4What will probably the following paragraph refer to?

A. To tell the readers how AI can be closely controlled.

B. To compare the very difference between AI and I A.

C. To explain to us why an Algorithm is so important.

D. To predict the development of AI in the year of 2018.

四、书面表达(共1题,共 5分)

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。

It was a warm weekday evening in May last year when my friend Alice and I were on a long walk around the university campus. We had met on a university trip in 2019, when I was in my final year and Alice was a master’s student. We loved each other at once because we both love books and talking loud about how odd the world is.

I had brought a book of mini plays that we were performing to each other as we walked, just for fun. At one point, as part of the merrymaking, Alice set off a quick run and I took it as an invitation to race. We were on a long pavement when I stuck my foot out to trip her—I just wanted her to have a tumble (跌倒) so we could laugh about it. She fell instantly and I kept on running; it was all part of the joke. But then I heard her screaming. I turned around and she was on the ground, holding her right leg. I thought for a second she must be kidding, for there was no way she could have hurt herself that badly. But her face was out of shape in pain and she was making this crying sound.

A man who was walking by had seen what had happened. He called an ambulance as soon as he saw Alice. Within 10 minutes it arrived. The medical staff had to pick her up and carried her into the ambulance.

I went back to Alice’s house to tell her sister, who she lives with, what had happened. We drove to the hospital, even though we knew they couldn’t let us in because of COVID-19. Tests revealed that Alice’s leg had shattered (粉碎) in eight places. She would remain in hospital for weeks and would probably be restricted to her bed at home with a full-length cast for months after that. Because of COVID-19, we still couldn’t visit her. Alice treated the situation with levity (轻率), telling me not to worry because accidents happen.

Paragraph 1:

She spent three weeks in hospital.

Paragraph 2:

So I wrote her a story, a kind of long-form apology, with Alice as the main character.
