21、Why Are Plane Seats Always Blue?
Planes are an engineering masterpiece. Since they were invented, they have made the world a better place. Like never before, we can travel to almost every corner of the world within hours.
【1】 The only time they land is when they need to get passengers on board or go through regular checks. This means the crew doesn’t have much time to clean up the plane. 【2】 Airlines are likely to go with dark blue fabric (布料)—it’s much more of a bother to clear up a red wine spill on white fabric than on blue.
Blue is also a color that can make passengers less anxious. If you are an 18-year-old teenager, you are probably not afraid of flying. But the aviation (航空) industry isn’t that old. 【3】 In fact, even today in the 21st century, 5% of the world’s population has ever flown on an airplane, which is extremely low. But that also means, most people are afraid of flying. Some statistics show that around 80 percent of people are scared to fly. 【4】 Compared to other means of transport such as cars, it’s a much safer option.
Anyway, people are afraid of heights. That’s why planes are purposefully designed in such a way to make you feel safe. For example, the color red is associated with objects to remind people of danger or to warn people that they need to stop. Green is used to make people aware of the presence of an emergency exit. 【5】
A.The airline business is expensive.
B.Unlike cars, planes are made to fly all the time.
C.Many airlines redesign or change their seats often.
D.Of course, it doesn’t make sense to be afraid of boarding a plane.
E.As recent as the 2000s, not many people had the opportunity to fly.
F.That’s why the seats must be designed in a way to look clean all the time.
G.But blue is a calm color associated with the positive qualities of trust and peace.
22、 If you were like most kids, your mother must have told you there were three no-no’s when it came to your fingers: Don’t put them in an electrical outlet, don’t stick them up your nose (at least not in public), and don’t use them when you are counting. 【1】 But experts in education and cognition now believe that using your fingers to do math is not only a perfectly good idea but may even help children become superior students.
It certainly makes sense. When children count on their fingers, they take an abstract concept — mathematics — and translate it into the most basic and visual form 【2】. Even when we aren’t actually counting on figures, they still can help us on math problems.
【3】 It activates when we respond to heat, pressure, pain, or the use of a given finger.
Studying brain scans, researchers discovered that when students aged 8 to 13 work on subtraction (减法 ) equations, this region “lights up” on the scans, even if the students aren’t using their fingers. The more complex the problem is, the more activities are detected.
The connection between finger use and math ability has been proved on old-fashioned math tests as well. With their eyes closed, first graders were asked to identify which of their fingers a researcher was touching. 【4】. When college students were given the same quiz, the highest scores once again performed best on calculation tests.
So what does all this mean? For one thing, parents and teachers shouldn’t discourage children from counting on their fingers. 【5】. Memorizing the multiplication tables may help, but it is not the best option. “I would like to see interesting and creative representations of ideas.” says Jo Boaler, a professor of math education.
Recently, a series of activities have been designed to strengthen students’ perception of their fingers. Maybe in the near future, there will be only two no-no’s regarding the use of fingers.
A.There is a section of the brain, called the somatosensory finger area.
B.Researchers also stress that students simply learn better using visual tools.
C.The first two laws of fingers are as true as ever.
D.That may sound simplistic, but the researchers offer an interesting explanation.
E.Researchers found those scoring highest on the finger-ID questions scored higher on a math test.
F.Researchers are unimpressed by those students who finish quickly as well.
G.In fact, experts believe the brain is built to “see” any process with our fingers.
23、 It’s normal to long for the taste of potato chips or a cheese-covered pizza. Even though they’re full of calories, eating them occasionally won’t do much harm. However, according to the new numbers, young people are becoming more gluttonous. The BBC’s Good Food Nation Survey showed that on average, 16 to 20-year-olds ate fast food at least twice a day in the UK. So what’s behind this fast food binge (狂热)?
WebMD, an online publisher of news and information of human health and well-being, surveyed nearly 600 teenagers and adults in the United States. They found that the most common reason was our busy lifestyle. More than 92.3 percent of respondents said they were too busy to cook. Many find it challenging to balance work and life, and the convenience of fast food meets their needs. Fast food is readily available in corner stores and vending machines (自动售货机). Remember those instant noodle cups from the supermarket? They’re ready in minutes, and you can store them at home for a long time.
But many people think this trend does no good. Sarah Toule, head of health information at World Cancer Research Fund, told the BBC: “It’s frightening that people, especially younger generations, are eating so much fast food loaded with fat, sugar and salt, but offers little nutritional value.”
She added, “Especially high in calories, fast food leads to unhealthy weight gain — which in turn increases the risk of 11 cancers later in life.”
So what is the right thing to do? Toule suggested that young people should prepare meals in advance and learn to include the different food groups in their diets.
【1】What does the underlined phrase “more gluttonous” in paragraph 1 mean?
A.Greedier.
B.Healthier.
C.Smarter.
D.Lazier.
【2】What is the main idea of paragraph 2?
A.People should make a change to their busy lifestyle.
B.Fast food helps people balance their work and life.
C.Fast food is becoming popular with teenagers and adults.
D.Nowadays people have more challenges both in work and life.
【3】According to Sarah Toule, fast food________.
A.can’t provide enough nutrition for eaters
B.will lead to 11 cancers
C.can help lose weight
D.is easy to prepare ahead of time
24、Jose Alberto Gutierrez’s life would never be the same again after finding a copy of Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy in the trash 20 years ago. It happened while he was driving his garbage truck through wealthier neighbourhoods at night and seeing books that were thrown away. It lit his desire to start rescuing books from the trash. He used to take home between 50 and 60 books every morning after his nine-hour shift that ran from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.. Eventually, he turned his book collection into a community library for children from low income families.
Colombia’s capital city of Bogota has 13 million residents and 19 public libraries. However, these libraries tend to be far away from where rural and poorer communities live. The option of buying new books is non-existent for families struggling to make ends meet. Gutierrez’s library is true representation of how one man’s trash can be another’s treasure. Having access to a library of books and being taken away instantly to another world while absorbed in a book is a luxury for the kids. “I think we are simply a bridge between people who have books and those who don’t have anything,” he said humbly about his remarkable attempt.
Gutierrez grew up poor, and his family could not afford to educate him beyond primary school. Nevertheless, his mother was an eager reader and read stories to him every night. Her love for books left a deep impression on Gutierrez, who never let a lack of formal education stop him from reading classics. He once said, “There’s nothing more beautiful than having a book in your pocket, in your bag or inside your car.”
Today, his library, titled “The Strength of Words”, occupies most of his home, and is piled from floor to ceiling with fiction and non-fiction titles. He has also roped in his family to expand this mission. Mrs Gutierrez, for example, selects and repairs the books her husband finds.
As word began to spread about his amazing project, fifty-six-year-old Gutierrez earned himself the nickname “Lord of the Books”. In spite of all this, Gutierrez is not yet content to call it a day. He continues to search bins for reading material.
【1】What is Gutierrez by occupation?
A.A public librarian.
B.A professional driver.
C.A trash collector.
D.a shift worker in a plant.
【2】What is a luxury for the kids in Gutierrez’s community?
A.Enjoying pleasure from reading.
B.Having their own real library.
C.The distance from public libraries.
D.The choices of buying new books.
【3】What really motivated Gutierrez to start his library for underprivileged children?
A.An assignment to rescue rejected books.
B.A passion for reading since childhood.
C.A pity on the underprivileged.
D.A desire to make a difference.
【4】What is the best title of the passage?
A.Lord of the Books.
B.From Trash to Treasure.
C.The Strength of Words.
D.A Bridge between people.

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Just as many families do at a point, Catherine chose to add a new family member by adopting a pet. Shortly after her daughter Kate’s birth, Catherine decided she wanted a close bond with a dog for Kate. Thus, Catherine called the dog shelter close by to inquire about adoption. After hearing about the available animals, she chose a Doberman Pinscher. Once they signed adoption papers, they named the dog Khan.
Catherine was hopeful this would provide valuable lessons for her baby, such as sharing, learning to love and responsibility to care for animals. She was looking forward to having the dog join the family.
Hearing of Khan’s rough background, Catherine immediately loved the dog. She was overjoyed to bring this special dog back to her family. Of course, she realized there were risks involved. Well, the obvious risks from bringing a large, potentially dangerous animal to her young baby, Catherine pushed them aside. If she had not adopted Khan, he would have been killed just a week later. So, this was his new life and second chance, and the family was hoping for the best.
Everything began smoothly. They trained Khan during the first few days. However, everything changed on that fourth day when the dog acted completely out of character.
The fateful day began with the usual playtime in the yard. Although baby Kate had her parents watching from a distance, they did not notice anything out of the ordinary. Kate and the new dog had been making a habit of playing out back like this. However, things were different this day.
So what was actually happening out there? The two were not being loud or crazy. They began running through the backyard grass together. Again, Catherine watched the two closely. Surprisingly, things had changed within an instant!
