21、 An advance in electronic publishing could make the e-book you are reading seem as dated as a silent film. Publishers hope to explore the growing success of e-books by releasing versions with added soundtracks(电影配音) and musical accompaniments.
The noises in the first multimedia books — released in Britain on Friday — include rain hitting a window in a Sherlock Holmes tale. When the plot of a book reaches the most exciting part, background scores will create tension.
Supporters argue that sound effects are the next logical development for e-books and will add excitement for younger readers. Critics, however, will argue that the noise will ruin the simple pleasure of having the imagination stimulated by reading.
Caroline Michel, chief executive of the literary agency, said the new generation of computer- literate readers was used to multiple sensory input. She said, “Young people have split computer screens where they may be watching television and replying to an email at the same time. If that‟s what the market wants then we should respond to the market.”
Book track‟s sound effects work by estimating the user‟s reading speed. Each time you turn a page, the software reassesses where you have reached in the text and times the sounds to switch on accordingly. If the soundtrack becomes out of synch (同步), a click on any word will reset it.
Some authors fear that a soundtrack could destroy the peace and quiet of libraries and ruin the pleasure, of reading. David Nicholls, author of Our Day, the bestseller now released as a film, said, “This sounds like the opposite of reading. I have enough trouble reading an e-book because I‟m constantly distracted by emails.”
Stuart Mat Bride, the crime writer whose novel Shatter the Bones was an e-book bestseller, sells 18% of his books as electronic downloads. He said, “If I‟m reading, I will do the noise in my head. I don‟t need someone to tell me what tea cups clinking sounds like. That would irritate(激怒) me.”

Big Chicken, by Maryn McKenna
Investigative journalist Maryn McKenna uses the modern industrial chicken as a window into how antibiotics(抗生素) transformed modern agriculture—for good and ill. She traces how animal antibiotics endanger human health, causing serious problems from antibiotic resistant stomach infections to UTIs. Recognizing that Americans are going to continue to eat chicken no matter what, McKenna suggests a way in which factory farming rids itself of its dependence on antibiotics.
Why Time Flies, by Alan Burdick
New Yorker staff writer Alan Burdick examines the greatest gift humanity has ever known: time. Time, he writes, appears to exist in two distinct forms. One is the standardized, objective kind found in clocks and watches; the other is our internal, biological sense of time, the one we measure in our cells, bodies and minds. But the closer he looks, the less clearer this distinction appears.

23、Getting your kids organized for the new school year
Parents can begin good organization habits with preschool-age children, said Elana Spira, Ph.D., co-author of The Organized Child. She suggests asking them to do small, simple actions on a regular basis. Maybe they unpack their backpacks and bring their lunch bag to the kitchen, or take their shoes off at the door.【1】. Doing small things at a young age helps children exercise discipline(自律) and attention, all of which they’ll need later on.
When kids enter elementary school, they’re ready for more responsibility. This is the time to teach them about daily activities, and help them take control over theirs. 【2】. When do children do their homework? How long do they need? Where do they do it? Where does the homework go once it is done? Figure it out all before, and keep to the schedule as much as possible.
As children get older and their schedules get busier, they need their parents ‘ help in recognizing priorities(优先处理的事) and understanding what it takes to make it all work. As with younger children, the goal is to help them figure out what will work for them — and then help them keep to it.
【3】. Julie Morgenstern, organizing and productivity expert, suggests keeping a family calendar—paper or electronic—and keeping it regularly. Each family member should have a color belonged to their activities, so it’s easy to see who is doing what, when. “You can’t expect people to look at the calendar on their own. You should have a family sit together every day to look at it, and look at three days ahead,” Morgenstern said. “【4】.”
“Set the child up for success by changing gradually,” Spira advises. “【5】. Wait until the child has been consistently successful with one solution, before moving on to the next.”

24、The topic “slash youth”, referring to those refusing to be defined or bound by just one personal identity and choosing to undertake multiple careers, has fueled heated debate on social media. On Douban, a Chinese social networking platform, the topic has attracted about 11,000posts and has been viewed over 400 million times. China’s young people are keen to share their slash youth stories online, presenting themselves as multiple and sometimes distinct identities, such as a nurse and model, a teacher and stand-up comedian, and an engineer and musician.
Xing Eryang, a 31-year-old female resident in Beijing, founded the Douban topic in 2021.While staying diligent about her daytime work, she is developing her hobbies, including stand-up comedy and vlogging, into secondary careers during her spare time. And she is amazed to find her “slash life” philosophy followed by so many of her peers.
Weiheng, a 26-year-old woman in Guangzhou, and Tang Yuhan, a 27-year-old man in Xuancheng city, Anhui province, are both participants in the topic, with their stories earning thousands of likes so far. The two are both musicians in their spare time, even though they are thousands of miles apart and have different jobs in media and finance. Their passion for music has grown since college and they didn’t abandon their enthusiasm, even after entering the workplace.
Their reaction showed the gap between the young and former generations. “My parents used to say, ‘music cannot earn you money’, so the band thing was regarded as a waste of time. However, we want to pursue whatever we love and are willing to pay for it.” says Weiheng.
“The ‘slash life’ mania(狂热)shows that, along with China’s economic development, our society is becoming more and more diversified and inclusive, and it welcomes everyone’s self-fulfillment,” says Shi Yanrong, an associate researcher from Tianjin Academy of Social Sciences. “Young people no longer have to rely on work and money for their sense of self-worth. They tend to practice a carpe diem(活在当下)philosophy and create their own identities.”
