二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、   I never meant to be a teacher. I watched my mother over the years, and I knew it wasn’t for me.

Going back to school to learn French and then teach the language, our mother had changed the center of her world when we were pre-teens.

When we went to bed, I knew how worried she could be over her students when they were troubled and how much of their stress she took on herself.

What I didn’t realize was this life she’d chosen offered her deep rewards.

As I grew up, I fell in love with a French-speaking Swiss man who asked me to marry him and move to Switzerland. Years later, when I found myself back in my hometown with a small child and a love of my second language, a chance arose for me to join my mother’s world of education, and I accepted.

I landed in a primary school in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. From the first week, I knew I’d stick with teaching. This is the most challenging experience I’ve ever had, and absolutely the best. I teach French, and I have never felt so much excitement as when I receive smiles from children, or praise from other teachers.

Most of my students have not traveled outside the town where they live, and for some, a trip to the city museum proves the most adventurous experience in their lives. If I could somehow open the world to these children, and if I could push them a bit, to dream of living in a bigger word, they may work harder and maybe one day venture beyond their neighborhood.

I work late into each night creating lessons and activities for the following day, trying to come up with ways to attract my students and connect them to the larger world. I also plan to go back to school for further study so that I can also teach science, math, social studies, reading and writing.

22、Are you fed up with staring at a computer screen for hours straight just to review your classes? It’s a problem that many of us encounter(遭遇).So why not pick your headset and learn via a podcast?

Podcast, or boke, refers to a range of audio programs on different audio platforms. According to China Daily, podcasts have become popular among young Chinese people who would like to enjoy the peace and power of learning through sound.

Established in 2012, China’s largest online audio platform, Ximalaya saw its subscribers pass 600 million by December 2019.Among these users over 46 percent were born between 1990s and 2000s.On average, active users listen to podcasts for nearly three hours per day.

The emergence of domestic(国内的)online radio platforms and the convenience brought about by smart devices are certainly two reasons for the popularity of the format. Its flexible nature also makes it a winner among the young audience.

“Audio is a good medium for content that can break the limit of time and space,” Jiang Feng, vice-president of Ximalaya, told China Daily. He added that podcasts have become an important channel for people to acquire information and knowledge .It also can accompany listeners in many different circumstances including working ,studying, exercising, traveling and just before going to bed.

Apart from providing company, the new media form also gives people a platform to speak out about important issues.

A senior high school student who wanted to be admitted to the Central Academy of Drama failed his national college entrance examination twice. He talked about the pressure he faced on an audio program called Please Listen, launched by Mango TV on Feb 19,2020.The program was designed to relieve audiences’ worries by sharing their own stories.

Podcasts tend to be a discussion, and just like real life conversations, they follow a flexible structure and usually last for at least an hour. More often than not, you can’t summarize two or three important points from those conversations, like you could from articles. They often do not have conclusions, either. It’s a very freeform medium that is very friendly to listeners,” Pan Aijuan,a podcast listener and book editor at a publishing house, told China Daily.

At the same time, the use of podcasts trains people to first listen to others before offering one’s own opinions. It helps build up our patience and listening skills. Cheng Yanliang, a co-founder of the podcast Left and Right, stated that“ audio programs can filter(减缓)those bad-tempered people who would lose patience after reading several paragraphs and start writing awful comments to insult others”.

With such advantages,“ podcasts are entering the mainstream(主流)in China”, noted China Daily.

23、   Scientists at MIT have managed to change ordinary spinach plants into natural sensors which can find chemicals used in bombs. The secret to giving spinach these special powers is nanotech, which is scientific area that deals with making or changing things that are extremely tiny.

“Ordinary spinach plants can be found everywhere and easy to store; like other plants, they normally take in carbon dioxide gas,” the scientists say. “But actually they can sense small changes of soil and water potential and respond to them. If we tap into this point, there is a wealth of information to access. That's what the scientists use to power their tiny experiments.”

For this experiment, the scientists placed two different kinds of tiny nano-materials into spinach plants. To get them into the plants, the scientists put a liquid containing them on the bottom of the plant's leaves. As part of its natural process, the spinach plant pulls water through its roots and into its leaves. If the water contains certain chemicals used in bombs, the tiny sensors in the leaves make the nano-tubes, which, along with the sensors, were placed into the spinach plant before by the scientists, produce a slightly special kind of light. By watching the plant constantly using a camera attached to a cheap computer ,the scientists set up a system that can send a warning email if chemicals from explosives are found in the water.

The computer the scientists used is about the size of a playing card. They say that in the future, their system could even use a cell phone with its camera changed slightly. Discovering chemicals used in bombs is just one of the many uses the researchers are exploring. They have used such plants to discover several other dangerous chemicals as well. From their point of view, there's no doubt that in the future, such systems could give farmers specific information about the health of the land and water on their farms.

A.To control the camera.

B.To contain the liquid.

C.To fix the tiny sensors.

D.To give off plant light.

【3】What can we say about the application of the experiment?

A.It's diverse.

B.It's unexpected.

C.It's limited.

D.It's cheap.

【4】What's the suitable title for the text?
