二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、We have long been attracted by quick fixes that could increase our intelligence. Today, people’s hopes lie in brain training apps, some of which claim to result in “smarter minds”. But is this quick fix all it is said to be?

There are plenty of brain training apps, but they all share the same characteristics: they turn mental exercises like simple arithmetic (算术),memory tests and logic and pattern-matching problems into quick games. The more you play these mini-games, the smarter you will get-or so some apps tell us. It is really a big promise.

Many of the apps say they are beaked by “science”, a claim I found surprising as a former neuroscientist. The concept that increasing intelligence would be as simple as practicing a few mini-games every day flies in the face of what we have discovered about how humans think and learn.

After surveying a diverse spread of thousands of users across a wide variety of apps, researchers at Western University in Canada discovered that “brain training has no appreciable effect on cognitive (认知的) functioning in the “real world”,even after extensive training periods”. The positive effects that have been found are restricted to the very specific mini-games and tasks that users ‘are trained on, such as the ability to memorize lists of words or numbers, or perform mental arithmetic, with little benefit to other skills.

If you are expecting them to improve your ability to write a novel or construct a complex spreadsheet. I am afraid you will want to look elsewhere.

Puzzle video games such as “Baba Is You” and “Return of the Obra Dinn”, see players apply their skill at logic, memory and concentration in a far more complex way than any brain training mini-game.

B.Intolerant.

C.Uninterested.

22、Time for Kids (TFK) gets the great news on the coolest toys for 2014 at the 111th American International Toy Fair.

What’s four days long, bigger than seven football fields, and filled with thousands of toys? It’s Toy Fair 2014!

Each year, hundreds of toy companies from across the country come together in New York City. All kinds of products are shown as a way to know what’s to come in the new year. This year’s trends (款式) include oversize toys. “In 2014, everything is really big and really out there,” says Adrienne Appell, a toy-trends expert.

Toy Fair is the largest toy trade show in the Western Hemisphere (西半球). Toy-store buyers go to the event to decide which toys they may want to sell during the holiday season. Members of the media, like TFK, go to the fair to report back on all the cool trends. Unfortunately, Toy Fair is not open to the public.

This year’s Toy Fair was the biggest in its 111-year history. More than 1,000 toy companies showed products from simple card games to high-tech robots. “Larger Than Life” was a Toy Fair favorite. This trend is all about big toys with a big play value.

Though it is all fun and games at Toy Fair, we saw lots of products making a push towards education, with STEAM. That stands for science, technology, engineering, art, and math. This trend includes word games. And of course, we saw some super cool, high-tech games. “Technology is always going to influence toys,” says Appell. “This year we saw lots of 3D games, and robots.”

23、   One peaceful afternoon, I open a photo album. I turn to a photo of a nice old man I had the honor to meet once. The memories rush back. That old man was not only kind, but also a legend. He was once one of the glorious “Flying Tigers”.

The “Flying Tigers” were also known as the American Volunteer Group. They served in China before the United States officially got involved in World War . They fought bravely for us against the Japanese. Only a few of them are still alive.

Louis T. Sneddon was a tail gunner and assistant engineer with the 14th Air Force near Kunming.

I expected to meet a serious man, but in fact Louis was kind and always smiled at me.

“I’m happy to be back in your home after 60 years. China has been in my heart although far away,” he said to me.

I was astonished when he told me his story. He finished 30 to 40 flying tasks, with over 900 hours of flight time. The main task was to patrol (巡逻) and attack ships moving between Japan, China and the Pacific islands. Bomb runs would fly low under the radar, drop their bombs and fly over the ships. These were considered to be the most dangerous missions of the war.

“Were you ever afraid?” I asked.

“I don’t know. Well, I didn’t think much about it. I just… did it,” he said, with a smile on his face. “But I was fortunate. The 10-member crew of my plane all returned alive.”

He was badly wounded, but he did not report his wounds and kept flying. His bravery and spirit deeply moved me, while his personality taught me a life-lesson.

“Make every day count.” His words ring in my mind. But the important thing I learnt from him was that we need to overcome our fear. Sometimes we think too much about the consequences, when we should really breathe deeply and take the brave, necessary step.

1When did the “Flying Tigers” serve in China?

A.When World War II broke out.

B.Before the US was formally drawn into World War .

C.When America got the final victory in World War .

D.After China declared war against Japan.

2Which of the following is TRUE about Louis T. Sneddon’s main task?

A.It was extremely difficult and dangerous.

B.Louis T. Sneddon had to fly for 900 hours in this task.

C.No one but Louis T. Sneddon survived in this task.

D.Louis T. Sneddon was slightly wounded in this task.

3What can be a suitable title for the text?

A.A Tiger of a Man B.A Photo Album

C.Flying Tasks D.The American Volunteer Group

4What was the intention of the author to write this passage?

A.To memorize a brave soldier.

B.To tell us a lesson of being optimistic.

C.To share his experience with us.

D.To appeal for peace forever.

24、   Strange ice rings in Siberia’s Lake Baikal have puzzled scientists for decades, but now the mystery apparently has been solved. The answer: the rings are caused by warm, circular currents of water under the ice, called eddies (漩涡).

The eddies’ strong currents melt the ice at the edge, but weaker ones keep the center frozen. “Results of our field surveys show that there are warm eddies that circulate in a clockwise (顺时针的) direction under the ice cover,” said Alexei Kouraev, a hydrologist at the University of Toulouse, in a NASA statement. “In the eddy center, the ice does not melt — even though the water is warm — because the currents are weak,” he said. “But on the eddy boundary, the currents are stronger, and warmer water leads to rapid melting.”

During field work, Kouraev and his colleagues drilled holes near ice rings and set sensors capable of measuring the temperature and salinity (盐浓度) of the water to a depth of 700 feet. They found that the water in the eddies was 2 to 4 warmer than the surrounding water.

Most of the rings appear in March or April and have a width of about 3 to 4 miles — too big to recognize from the ground but easily seen from satellites above. Some rings were ephemeral while others lasted for weeks or even months.

Lake Baikal is the world’s largest and deepest freshwater lake, according to Gizmodo. It’s home to many varieties of fish not seen anywhere else in the world, and even a population of freshwater seals.

Researchers are still investigating what causes Baikal’s eddies but think it’s likely because of wind patterns, rivers that flow into the lake and the shape of the lake’s coastline and bottom.

1Which word can best replace the underlined word “ephemeral” in paragraph 4?

A.Steady. B.Current.

C.Fundamental. D.Temporary.

2Why is the ice in the center of ice rings frozen while that at the edge is melted?

A.Because the center of ice rings is 2 to 4 warmer than the edge.

B.Because the currents in the center are less powerful.

C.Because it is too wide to be recognized or melted.

D.Because water in the center circulates in a clockwise direction.

3Which of the following statements about Lake Baikal’s eddies is TRUE?

A.They are caused by hot and circular currents under the ice.

B.The ice in the center of Lake Baikal’s eddies melts faster than that of the edge.

C.Researchers are uncertain about the exact reason of the eddies’ existence.

D.Lake Beikal’s eddies can only be measured at the depth of 700 feet.

4What maybe the best title for the passage?

A.What’s causing the giant ice rings in Siberia?

B.The mystery of the eddies' in the Lake Baikal uncovered.

C.The largest and deepest freshwater lake — Lake Baikal.

D.Why does the edge of an ice ring melt faster?
