二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、   Laura Sides was a psychology major at the University of Nottingham in 2004. She first noticed signs of her dad’s developing dementia(痴呆) when she moved to Nottingham. She said, "Dad was a doctor, so he knew exactly what had happened to him, but people try to hide it when they are ill. Then, I came home for my 21st birthday and arranged to meet him, but he never showed up as he’d forgotten. That’s when I knew something serious had happened."

So, aged 21, she decided to leave university and look after him herself. She lived close by, popping in every day to make sure he was eating, and that the house was tidy, before heading off to her work.

Besides challenging moments, there was a time when looking after her dad was a pure joy. "We’d wake up, I’d ask what he wanted to do that day, and however ridiculous the adventure is, off we’d go."

Sadly, in 2009, 5 years later, Laura lost her father. Before he died, Laura went to a hospital appointment with him, where doctors mentioned that his form of Alzheimer’s disease was genetic meaning there was a fifty-fifty chance that she had inherited it. For several years Laura agonised over whether to be tested, finally finding out in August 2017 that she has the APP gene, meaning that, like him, she will develop the condition within a decade.

At first, she struggled, feeling as if her life lacked purpose. Then, during a sleepless night in the summer of 2018, she decided at around 2 a.m. to enter the 2019 London Marathon sponsored by the charities Alzheimer’s Society and Alzheimer’s Research UK.

She hoped to start the conversation around early-onset Alzheimer’s disease and to encourage people to talk about it more openly. "I remember when Dad was ill, people wouldn’t know how to react, but I want to be honest and open," she added. "The more information we can get, the less of a taboo(忌讳) we will feel. That said, the support I’ve received so far after going public has been amazing — that’s what is carrying me through."

22、When Amanda Lemay heard the story about a baker and her husband who were traveling around the United States in a van (厢式货车), learning from expert bakers, she wanted to do something similar. So she got rid of most of her possessions and made an old ambulance with her dad into a lovely home on wheels.

Lemay's ambulance is actually a former emergency response vehicle for the US Navy, built on a 2006 Ford E350 Cutaway. Renovations (改装) were mainly done by her and her dad. Now the dark blue vehicle has a lot of built-in cabinets on all sides, offering a lot of storage space, while the rooftop has 400-watt of solar power panels and a small roof deck where Lemay practices Yoga. The inside is tastefully done to suit Lemay’s work and hobbies. As Lemay mentions, not only did her father help, but also the rest of her family. Lemay’s mother helped sew the decorations on the removable cushions, and her sister crafted the leather pulls.

Her current nomadic (流浪式的) lifestyle fits well with her work doing audiobooks, voiceovers, and publishing work. In the end, this unexpected path has Lemay rethinking what it means to be truly sustainable, now that van life has gotten her to become minutely aware of the water, electricity, and other daily resources that she uses. But all these day-to-day trouble is balanced with a greater sense of freedom.

“It’s almost mind-blowing, it feels like a completely different life because I'm doing the work online, and I can do things on my own schedule. Most of my days are mine—so by living in the van, I can be where I want to be, and do the things I want to do, and spend time outside. ”

23、TONY SOPRANO’S LAST MEAL

Between 1912 and the 1990s, New Jersey State was home to more than 20 diner manufacturers who made probably 95 percent of the diners in the U.S., says Katie Zavoski, who is helping hold a diner exhibit. What makes a diner a diner? (And not, say, a coffee shop?) Traditionally, a diner is built in a factory and then delivered to its own town or city rather than constructed on-site. Zavoski credits New Jersey’s location as the key to its mastery of the form. “It was just the perfect place to manufacture the diners,” she says. “We would ship them wherever we needed to by sea.”

GOOD FOOD, GOOD TUNES

Suzanne Vega’s 1987 song “Tom’s Diner” is probably best known for its frequently sampled “doo doo doo doo” melody (旋律) rather than its diner-related lyrics. Technically, it’s not even really about a diner — the setting is New York City’s Tom’s Restaurant, which Vega frequented when she was studying at Barnard. Vega used the word “diner” instead because it “sings better that way,” she told The New York Times. November 18 has since been called Tom’s Diner Day, because on that day in 1981, the New York Post’s front page was a story about the death of actor William Holden. In her song Vega sings: “I Open / Up the paper / There’s a story / Of an actor / Who had died / While he was drinking.”

MEET THE DINER ANTHROPOLOGIST

Richard J.S. Gutman has been called the “Jane Goodall of diners” (he even consulted on Barry Levinson’s 1982 film, Diner). His book, American Diner: Then Now, traces the evolution of the “night lunch wagon,” set up by Walter Scott in 1872, to the early 1920s, when the diner got its name (adapted from “dining car’’), and on through the 1980s. Gutman has his own diner facilities (floor plans, classic white mugs, a cashier booth); 250 of these items are part of an exhibit in Rhode Island.

24、W e all love bank holidays. In the UK, we only get eight bank holidays in one year, and at least five of those occur around Christmas time and Easter time! A bank holiday is a British English term. This is an official day that is decided by the government, when banks, shops and offices close for the day even though it’s a weekday—usually a Monday, and a lot of people have a day off work.

Bank holidays are different in Colombia—firstly, they are called “festivos”. There are twenty festivos for the whole country in one year! In Britain ,people get more holiday allowance(津贴)than Colombians but fewer bank holidays. There can be even more festivos in Colombia, depending on which region of Colombia you live in. This is because different regions have their own holidays. For example, some regions have a patron saint(守护神) in their region, so they have an extra festivo to celebrate that saint.

However, there are some days that are national holidays for historical reasons. There is an Independence Day celebration on July 20 every year. This is just like Bastille Day in France on July 14, or Independence Day in the United States on July 4. Other important festivos in Colombia are :Labour Day, on May 1, and Columbus Day on October 12. Columbus Day is a historical bank holiday that almost every county on the continent of America celebrates. This includes Colombia, Chile, Peru, Argentina, Mexico and the United States. It is a memorialization of the day that the Italian sailor, Christopher Columbus, first reached land on the continent in the year 1492. Many people criticize this day and say it is not something to celebrate because of the way Columbus and his teams treated the people that were already living there.

1What is a “bank holida” according to the text?

A. An official nationwide vacation.

B. A holiday only for the bank staff.

C. A British traditional religion festival.

D. A celebration for Christmas and Easter.

2What can we learn from paragraph 2?

A. Colombia and Britain have the same number of festivos.

B. All Colombians have the same number of festivos.

C. Colombians have less holiday allowance than British people.

D. People in most regions celebrate a patron saint.

3Why do many Americans refuse to celebrate Columbus Day ?

A. Because Columbus wasn’t an American at all.

B. Because Columbus once treated the locals badly.

C. Because it wasn’t Columbus that found America first.

D. Because Columbus didn’t live in the continent of America.

4What is the text mainly about?

A. A British English term.

B. Bank holidays in Colombia.

C. Important festivos in America.

D. Different bank holidays in the world.

四、书面表达(共1题,共 5分)

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Last Saturday I received a call from my close friend, Peter. He asked me to help with his group who provided musical performances at the local hospitals. At first I was unwilling to go because of my unfinished homework, but I was finally persuaded into helping out this one time, which turned out to be an unforgettable and fruitful experience.

That evening, I was picked up by Peter and went to a local hospital with him, taking my guitar and hoping I could sing some solo songs with his musical group.

An extremely large hospital came into our sight. When guided into the hall, we were shocked to find so many patients and staff there. What we saw next aroused our sympathy. Some patients were in wheelchairs or with their arms in bandages, while others were with their drips attached. Some faces were rather pale; some wore worried expressions; some walked as fast as they could. Maybe their days seemed to be dull during the period of their treatment, so our coming brought some color into their lives. Seeing their happy faces, I thought it was worthwhile to join Peter's group.

Among the audience, I spotted one particular young girl aged about 16, who was wearing a head scarf and appeared to be more delighted than the others. When we started our performance, excitement filled the hall. Peter mentioned to me that the young girl I had noticed earlier was singing along with all our songs quietly to herself. At a break, out of curiosity, I asked one of the nurses about the girl. She said that the girl suffered serious burns and was under treatment and that she was a bit down these days, but our performance had lifted her spirits. Our songs moved all the people present. They all cheered for us, including the young girl and we were inspired. Facing these lovely people, we really wanted to do more.

注意:1、续写词数应为150左右;

2、请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

We asked the girl if she would like to sing with us.
