21、 Classified advertising is that advertising which is grouped in certain sections of the paper and is thus distinguished from display advertising. Such groupings as ―Help Wanted, RealEstate(不动产), Lost and Found are made, the rate charged being less than for display advertising. Classified advertisements are a convenience to the reader and a saving to the advertiser.
The reader who is interested in a particular kind of advertisement finds all advertisements of that type grouped for him. The advertisers may, therefore, use a very small advertisement if it was placed among larger advertisements in the paper. It is evident that the reader approaches the classified advertisement in a different frame of mind from that in which he approaches the other advertisements in the paper. He turns to a page of classified advertisements to search for the particular advertisement that will meet his needs.
As his attention is voluntary, the advertiser does not need to rely too much extent ondisplay type to get the reader’s attention. Formerly all classified advertisements were of the same size and did not have display type. With the increase in the number of such advertisements, however, each advertiser within a certain group is competing with others in the same group for the reader’s attention. In many cases, the result has been an increase in the size of the space used and the addition of headlines and pictures. In that way, the classified advertisement has in reality advertisement. This is particularly true of real estate advertising?

22、 Megan Piontkowski, an artist and illustrator, was out of work due to the pandemic (流行病). She learned through a friend that a Brooklyn hospital needed fabric masks for workers. Piontkowski already had some fabric on hand and a sewing machine, so she got to work. She washed the fabric, sewed masks, washed them again, and hung them to dry. After that she drove them to the hospital. When she asked if the hospital would pay for the masks. she was told they had no money.
“I felt very mixed about it,” she told VOX, a famous American TV station. She knew the hospital needed masks badly. But meanwhile, “I’m out of work and I 'm being asked to donate them.” “The fact that she wasn't compensated(补偿) for sewing highly necessary items felt like a ease of traditional ‘women’s work’ not being valued,” Piontkowski said. While larger companies have begun massive cloth masks in recent weeks, much of the work of making the protective clothes, especially in the early stages of the pandemic, was done at home-often by women. That gender breakdown is continuing in some volunteer efforts-about 85 percent of the around 70 volunteers sewing masks for the New York City-based group Face Mask Aid, for example, are women.
And masks are only part of the story. The demands of daily life during the coronavirus pandemic are many, from shopping for food shortages and virus fears to caring for children when schools and day cares are closed. And in many cases, women are the ones figuring out how to meet those new demands. Some women are still working outside the home a essential workers but shouldering care responsibilities when they get home.
It doesn’t have to be this way. With more men going into tasks like cooking and educating children, it is potential to reset gender norms. “The pandemic is potentially sparking new conversations about divisions of labor,” Jill Yavorsky, a sociology professor at the University of North Carolina, Charlotte, told VOX.
【1】What can we learn about Megan Piontkowski from paragraph 1?

23、Internet communication is having a positive influence on education in and out of the classroom. The Internet provides the opportunity for people anywhere in the world to access quality educational services from the comfort of their home. The Internet allows you to have access to educational opportunities on your schedule, and at your own pace.
Classroom usage of computers in the United States began in the early 1980s, with applications limited to software packages that provided drill and practice by students. By the early 1990s, most classrooms in the United States had a computer the teacher could use to aid in the presentation of academic material. By the late 1990s Internet usage became widespread, becoming a significant factor in classroom instruction. The late 1990s also saw the rise of Internet based post-secondary educational programs that allow students to earn a college degree without attending a class in a traditional institution.
Internet usage opens the entire world of information and communication to students. Students can access libraries from any city of the world at any time day or night. Students can have 24 hour access to all materials needed to complete an assignment.
Students using computer technology and communication tools to research, develop and publish school projects develop critical thinking skills that are essential in decision making processes. Teachers need to equip students with a new set of skills which will enable them to locate, analyze, evaluate, and synthesize the vast amounts of information available. Students must become information managers.
Students who learn to use computers and the Internet proficiently (熟练地) develop competencies that are required in the 21st century workplace. Internet usage allows students and workers to communicate efficiently, increasing productively and facilitating creative thinking. The pace of technological change is forcing students to continue learning new skills and responsibilities. The reality of rapid change will challenge established instructional methods, and will transform schools into technological training centers.
【1】What can computer technology and communication tools benefit students?
A. Entering libraries freely.
B. Making essential decisions.
C. Being information managers.
D. Gaining important thinking skills.
【2】What makes students pursue new skills continuously?
A. The high pace of modem society.

24、 The Wall Street Journal recently published an excellent article penned by Wendy Bounds on a hot topic here at MNN: the air-purifying qualities of the common houseplant. Given that the air inside your home can be 2 to 5 times more polluted than the air outside of it, making it clean with plants like peace lily(百合花)and asparagus fern(芦笋蕨)is an economical, artistically pleasing alternative to air purifiers. So, it's been acknowledged that a bunch of pretty potted houseplants can help you maintain a healthier home, but a smarter home?
That's the question in light of a recent study published by the Journal of Environmental Psychology showing that the presence of plants in a room, particularly in an office environment, can shrink attention span(范围). Struggling directive attention (the kind of attention that takes effort) can be refreshed through exposure to naturalistic environments. Basically, taking a walk through the park can clear one's head. But can a head be refreshed simply by being surrounded by houseplants?
To test their theory, the study's authors rounded up a bunch of participants, put some of them in a room with no plants and put others in a room with four plants placed around a desk, and put them all to the same series of tests. First was a Reading Span Test, which involves reading a series of sentences aloud and remembering the last word in each sentence. This task requires that you fluently switch between attention demanding tasks: from reading and memorizing at one moment, to writing and recalling at the next. Next came a proof-reading task followed by another Reading Span Test.
The results? Participants working in the room with the plants improved their performance from the first Reading Span Test to the second while those working in the room lacking in greenery did not. Consequently, the benefits of working among plants is indeed evident.
【1】What do we know from the first paragraph?
A.Staying indoors can help avoid the poorer air outdoors.
B.Houseplants can function as beautiful cheap air purifiers.
C.Planting potted flowers as decorations is very interesting.

A.Focus one's attention. B.Disturb one's attention.

【3】What does the test prove?
A.Working in nature helps increase productivity.
B.Houseplants will be in great demand in our life.
C.Greenery creates healthier naturalistic atmosphere indoors.
D.Working among houseplants improves mental functioning.
【4】What can be a suitable title for the text?
