二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、Artificial intelligence (AI) technology has been widely applied in a national park in Northwest China to track snow leopards inhabiting the region.

The AI-aided digital toolbox can automatically tell the species apart in the Qilian Mountains National Park, Gansu province, from other wildlife, using images captured by infrared cameras (红外相机). The technology, jointly developed by Chinese internet giant Tencent, the World Wild Fund and One Planet Foundation, can thus improve data processing efficiency.

Located at around 3, 500 meters above sea level, the Qilian Mountains with vast stretches of bare rocks reaching from the grass provide a favorable hideaway shelter for the snow leopards.

Though more than 200 cameras have been put in the region, sorting out relevant information had not been easy for researchers.

“For conducting further studies on the population, distribution and activities of the snow leopards, a flagship species in the region, the cameras would capture (捕捉) hundreds of thousands of video clips and photos every quarter,” said Ma Duifang with the administration bureau of the park’s Gansu section.

“Even a slight movement in the environment, such as a mild breeze blowing over the grass, can activate the cameras. Sometimes, curious wildlife bumps into the device triggering the shutter (触发快门), and the cameras take pictures of mere clouds,” Ma added.

Ma and his colleagues had to go through each video frame by frame (逐帧地). The information of species that appeared on the images also required human input, so it often took them several weeks to complete such tasks.

Tencent’s engineering team has independently developed a species recognition algorithm (算法) by means of transfer learning and automatic data enhancement. Thanks to AI technologies, researchers in the Qilian Mountains National Park no longer need to work like mad in search of leopards hiding out in the wild.

“The forest police can now locate a snow leopard from 1, 000 pictures in just about 20 minutes, much faster than before,” said Huang Xiangqi, one of the tech developers.

Snow leopards are under China’s highest national-level protection and are listed as vulnerable (脆弱的) by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

In China, they can be spotted in cold areas in southwestern, northwestern, and northern regions including Tibet, Sichuan, Xinjiang, Gansu and Inner Mongolia.

“We hope we can combine monitoring data with field investigation to help researchers accurately identify the wild species so as to draw up a more specific plan for their protection,” said Ma Yao, director of the project, hoping the digital toolbox can be used in more countries.

22、   They call it the “rule of 150”. An anthropologist(人类学家)called Robin Dunbar made a study of 21 different primitive societies. He found that they all lived in villages of around 150 people. Then he asked people living in modern cities to make a list of all the people they knew well enough to talk to. Each of them made a list of around 150 people. Many of us have left village life behind. But the idea of the village has not left us.

Other studies of businesses and army units have shown that when people are forced into groups of over 150 they become inefficient. There are just too many people around to communicate with effectively. It also seems that when our personal “villages” become too small, people feel lonely. We need other people to help us.

Many people see life as a kind of journey. As they travel they pick up things they need. These are friends, a family and jobs. This is a narrow way of looking at things. It does not explain why people who get good jobs and become rich are often unhappy.

Using the “rule of 150”, we can see things differently. Instead of being a lonely traveler, you are the head of your own village. You are responsible for every part of village life. Getting a good job helps with the “economic development of your village. But you also need to pay attention to the social harmony of your village.

Many people think that happiness is about winning a race. The winner gets a great job, a perfect family and a lot of money. The loser should expect to be unhappy. The “rule of 150” teaches us that happiness comes with getting the right balance of relationship in our lives.

In a competitive society it is easy to judge people according to the kind of job they have or how much money they make. In fact, we are all the boss of our own villages. This is a difficult job. It is worthy of your respect.

【1】What does the figure “150” relate to?

A.The size of a group.

B.The number of groups.

C.The amount of work.

D.The number of primitive societies.

【2】What is the author’s opinion about “seeing life as a kind of journey”?

A.It only refers to rich people.

B.It doesn’t include village life.

C.It can’t cover all possibilities in life.

D.It may bring about unhappiness.

【3】What do you do as the head of your own village?

A.Take a long journey with the other villagers.

B.Compete against others to achieve happiness.

C.Use the “rule of 150” to improve the village life.

D.Deal properly with the people and things around you.

【4】What is the “rule of 150” discussed in the text mainly about?

A.The journey of life.

B.Relationship in one’s life.

C.The way to look at things.

D.The competitive society.

24、I was recently surfing the Internet when I came across a collection of strange beach photos where everyone had a cloth wall surrounding their little patch of sand. I had never seen anything like it before, and I was interested in it. So I started searching all sorts of phrases that might throw light on the mystery of Polish beach separators.

I found a site on Poland’s affairs that actually covered this “phenomenon” in details. According to the site, beach separators have been a part of Polish beach-going culture for a long time, but have recently been getting a lot of attention online, after foreign tourists started posting photos on social networks.

Beach separators vary in size according to the size of the group. You’ll see tiny ones only surrounding the space around a single beach towel, and giant ones separating a large part of the beach. They weren’t designed to protect their users from prying(窥探)eyes. It’s no secret that strong winds are very common on the shores of the Baltic Sea, so they were originally meant to allow beach-goers to enjoy sunbathing without having their belongings blown away, or sand blown in their faces.

However, in recent years, people have begun criticizing them. During the summer, beach separators are placed so close to each other that a person can hardly pass between them, let alone find a place to put their own beach towels. This creates a problem for foreign tourists unfamiliar with them, who just want a place to lie down on the sand. And thus they can easily create all kinds of conflicts due to the lack of space. For example, some people leave the beach for hours but leave their separators in place to make sure that their space doesn’t get occupied by someone else.

Having visited a fair number of seaside resorts(度假胜地)across Europe, I admit that I have never seen anything like this before.

1What attracted the author’s attention according to the first paragraph?

C. The sand patches   D. The colorful stones

2Why did the beach-goes set up separators?

A. To attract others’ attention   B. To keep themselves in privates

C. To stop winds disturbing them   D. To protect themselves from sunburn

3What seems to be the problem with beach separators?

A. They cause plenty of garbage

B. They make the beach overcrowded

C. They leave their separators unattended

D. They lead to many crimes against foreigners

4What’s the author’s purpose of writing this passage?

A. To encourage the local tourism in Poland

B. To introduce a kind of Polish beach culture

C. To discuss the possibilities of solving the beach problem

D. To urge the tourism department to face the beach problem

四、书面表达(共1题,共 5分)

26、Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point'(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.

These days, its not unusual to see middle-aged men collecting Star Wars action figures, office workers wearing Hello Kitty accessories, or celebrities like David Beckham playing with Lego bricks, it's becoming more and more common to see adult taking an interest in toys, comic books and the activities that are traditionally associated with children. This phenomenon has given rise to a new word: kidult.

What lies behind the phenomenon? One is about adults' nostalgia(怀旧)for the carefree days of childhood, and this is especially true with today's fast-paced, stressful lifestyles. Another is about a societal change in recent decades where people are starting families later. As a result, they have more time and money to spend on themselves. Some adults could only window-shop for their dream toys when they were kids, but now they can afford that radio-controlled car or high-priced doll they have always wanted.

Society traditionally disapproves of adults who refuse to put aside childhood interests, viewing the refusal as a sign of social immaturity (不成熟) and irresponsibility. Those who agree with this view sometimes claim that kidults are suffering from the pop-psychology concept known as Peter Pan Syndrome, an anomaly(异常)that people remain emotionally at the level of teenagers.

From the standpoint of kidults, though, this phenomenon is seen as nothing but harmless fun. Kidults insist that having youthful interests keeps them young, happy and creative, and their refusal to conform to society's acccptable tastes shows independent thinking. Besides, they argue that being part of the social trend of delayed adulthood is not purely a personal choice. The real causes include expensive housing, increased educational requirements for employment and poor work opportunities.
