二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、   In 2010, a terrible earthquake occurred in China’s Qinghai province, causing tremendous damages. With the aid of the central government and people throughout the nation, the rescue and recovery lifted the survivors further and further from hell.

But there was still much room for improvement. Qinghai taught me to create light when there seems to be none to be found—literally.

I started working on the highland region by installing solar panels in an isolated school without electricity. We also provided metric tons of clothes, computer labs, libraries food, medicine, coal and even yaks. Indeed, when first arrived in China, never imagined I’d’ end up buying, riding, milking and getting kicked by yaks-let alone harvesting their waste for fuel. Even there, on the “planet’s third pole”, Chinas’ poverty alleviation miracle means that the Qinghai I’ve returned to recently is different place than I first saw in 2011. Since the government has brought unthinkably rapid development, we’ve shifted toward providing surgeries for nomadic children and university scholarships for nomads.

One surgery was for girl with a severe cleft palate. She’d lived in such a remote area that she was amazed when she first rode an escalator in Beijing. She was shocked by the “stairs that move themselves”. A friend paid to fly her home after the surgery. She was amazed because she didn’t know that planes flew above the clouds. She felt like an angel. And I, too, felt closer to heaven.

My book, Closer to Heaven, published in English and Chinese by China Intercontinental Press, is the highlight of my life’s mission to contribute to and tell the story of China’s poverty alleviation miracle from the front lines.

These journeys have been adventures. They’ve brought me from the darkness of the quake zone toward the light, from the United States to the “roof of the world” and closer to heaven. And they’ve been firsthand exploration of how China, in turn, has lifted so many people from the hell that is poverty and closer to heaven, as it exists on this Earth.

22、In Kansas City,Missouri,a computer helps firefighters. The computer, which works very fast, has information about all the 350,000 street addresses in the city.Within two or three seconds after a call is received, the computer provides necessary information for the firefighters. The information is then sent to them by radio from the computer centre in the City Hall. The exact place of the burning building and its size, type and any other details are clear to them.

The Kansas City computer system also has a medical record of each of the city’s 900 firefighters. This kind of information is especially useful when a firefighter is injured. With the information, doctors at hospital can treat the injured firefighters more quickly and easily.

The firefighters themselves greatly appreciate the computer’s help. They know about possible danger ahead of them and can prepare for it.Many times the computer information helps to save lives and property(财产).Sometimes the lives are those of firefighters themselves.

Mike Horan,a firefighter captain, says,“I feel as if the computer is ready to help me if I get hurt.”

23、What if AI could interpret your imagination, turning images in your mind into reality? While that sounds like a detail in a science fiction, researchers have now accomplished exactly this. Researchers found that they could reconstruct highly accurate images from brain activity by using the popular stable diffusion (扩散) image generation model. The authors wrote that unlike previous studies, they didn’t need to train the AI models to create these images.

The researchers said that they first predicted a potential representation, which is a model of the image’s data, from fMRI (功能性磁共振成像) signals. Then, the model was processed and noise was added to it through the diffusion process. Finally, the researchers decoded (解码) text representations from fMRI signals and used them as input to produce a final constructed image.

The researchers wrote that a few studies have produced good reconstructions of images but it was only after training. This resulted in limitations because training complex models are challenging and there are not many samples to work with. Prior to this new study, no other researchers had tried using diffusion models for visual reconstruction.

In the past, we’ve seen other examples of how brainwaves and brain functions can create images. In 2014, a Shanghai - based artist Jody Xiong used sensors to connect sixteen people with disabilities to balloons of paint. The people would then use their thoughts to burst specific balloons and create their own paintings.

With the advancement of AI, more and more researchers have been testing the ways AI models can work with the human brain. In a January 2022 study, researchers at Radboud University in the Netherlands trained an AI network on fMRI data from 1, 050 unique faces and converted the brain imaging results into actual images. The study found that the AI was able to perform reconstruction. In the latest study, the researchers found that current diffusion models can now achieve high-quality visual reconstruction.

【1】How did researchers make images from brain activity in the previous research?

A.By using generation model.

B.By training AI models.

C.By reconstructing mind.

D.By predicting people’s imagination.

【2】Where are images’ data from?

A.The fMRI signals

B.The diffusion text.

C.The processed model.

D.The text representation.

【3】Why do the researchers think their new study is meaningful?

A.Their training work is very challenging.

B.They’ve made training models less complex.

C.Nobody has reconstructed images by brainwaves.

D.They can reconstruct accurate images from brain activity.

【4】What can we infer from the last paragraph?

A.Few researchers have used AI to make reconstruct images.

B.Scientists should do more to make high - quality reconstruction.

C.The AI models should be improved to work with fMRI data.

D.The AI contributes a lot to good visual reconstruction.

24、Scientific reports show the destructive effects of climate change, but many scientists say it is important to remain positive. If the world continues to change, don’t give up, and we can still prevent some of the worst effects of climate change.

Recently, however, many scientists are dealing with the feeling of doom about climate change or “doomism.” Jacquelyn Gill is a climate scientist at the University of Maine. She says that around 2018 she noticed an increase in these “doomers,” or people who think that saving the earth is hopeless. They refuse to change their behavior or consider how they can work to prevent climate change.

The United Nation’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) recently published its third report. This report explained the damage caused by the burning of traditional fuels, like oil and coal. New investments in traditional fuels and removal of forests for farming are preventing the world from helping stop climate change.

Anderson is the Environment Program Director for the United Nations. She says officials are trying to get people to take action because there is a climate crisis. Their goal is not to scare people into doing nothing.

“We are not doomed, but rapid action is absolutely essential. With every month or year that we delay action, climate change becomes more complex, expensive and difficult to overcome,” Andersen said.

The UN IPCC report stated that without fast and extreme measures to cut carbon pollution, the world is not likely to limit warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. The global temperature has already increased by 1.1 degrees Celsius. After 1.5 degrees, climate change will quickly worsen causing environment to be in danger. It will cause an increase in weather disasters.

James Skea is a leader from the UN IPCC Report. “We don’t fall over the cliff at 1.5 degrees. Even if we were to go beyond 1.5, it doesn’t mean we throw up our hands in despair,” Skea said.

Michael Mann is a climate scientist at Pennsylvania State University. He says that scientists used to think Earth would continue to warm decades after we balance emissions. Balancing emissions to net zero means not creating more carbon in the atmosphere than oceans and forests can remove. New research suggests that it will only take a few years to decrease carbon levels in the air after we balance emissions.

【1】What is the writer’s attitude towards climate change?

A.Optimistic.

B.Pessimistic.

C.Cautious.

D.Objective.

【2】According to the passage, which is mentioned in the third report by UN IPCC?

A.The change of people’s behaviors.

B.The damage caused by human activities.

C.The sharp increase in number of doomers.

D.The measures to help stop climate change.

【3】What is the main idea of the last paragraph?

A.The significance of UNIPCC third report.

B.The difficulties of decreasing carbon levels.

C.Scientists’ optimistic attitude towards climate change.

D.The need to take immediate actions against climate change.
