21、The Mississippi State University Extension Service is offering the Master Gardener training and certification online again this year,

Participants take 40 hours of instruction in horticulture and related topics to become expert volunteers. Learn more and register for the first Master Gardener class of 2022 from February 1 to February 28 at http://msuext.ms/mg. Instruction for all classes is online and self-paced. The online class material is offered from March 15 to May 15.

About Volunteering

“The Master Gardener program trains active volunteers who exchange the 40 hours of educational training they receive for 40 hours of volunteer service within one year of their training,” said Jeff Wilson, a horticulture specialist of the Master Gardener program. “These Master Gardeners continue to be assets to their communities as, in future years, they continue to receive training and spend a minimum of 20 community service hours a year to maintain their certified status.”

The volunteer work of Master Gardeners helps local Extension offices reach a broader audience than is possible through just the efforts of Extension agents. Volunteers take on a variety of community beautification projects and extend the educational arm of the university to the public by providing horticultural information based on university research and recommendations.

“Master Gardener volunteers experience the personal satisfaction of serving their community, gaining horticultural expertise and connecting with their local gardening community,” Wilson said.

Fees

The cost for Master Gardener training is $ 125 for those who want to become certified volunteers and provide 40 hours of service. For $ 200, the same material is available for those not interested in the volunteer service component.

22、   High-pitched and yet distinct, the sound of a voice calling the name “Amy” is unmistakable. But this isn't a human cry—it's the voice of a killer whale called Wikie.

New research reveals that orcas are able to imitate human speech, saying words such as "hello", "one, two" and “bye bye”. The study also shows that the creatures are able to copy unfamiliar sounds produced by other orcas.

Writing in the journal Biological Sciences, researchers from institutions in Germany, UK, Spain and Chile, describe how they carried out the latest research with Wikie, a 14-year-old female orca living in an aquarium in France.

After first brushing up Wikie's grasp of the “copy” command, she was trained to imitate three familiar orca sounds made by her 3-year-old Moana. Wikie was then additionally exposed to five orca sounds she had never heard before, including noises sounding like a creaking door. Finally, Wikie was exposed to a human making three of the orca sounds, as well as six human sounds, including “hello”, “Amy”, “ah ha”, “one, two” and “bye bye”.

The team found that Wikie was often quickly able to copy the sounds, whether from an orca or a human, with all of the novel noises copied within 17 trials. What's more, two human sounds and all of the human-produced orca sounds were managed on the first attempt—although only one human sound "hello" was correctly produced more than 50% of the time on subsequent trials.

The creatures are already known for their ability to copy the movements of other orcas, with some reports suggesting they can also copy the sounds of bottlenose dolphins and sea lions after several trials.

Scientists say the discovery helps to cast light on how different groups of wild killer whales have ended up with distinct accents, adding weight to the idea that they are the result of imitation between orcas.

【1】What is the author's main purpose in writing the text?

A.To analyze orcas' speech abilities.

B.To highlight the conservation of the orca.

C.To inform us of orcas' ability to imitate sounds.

D.To convince us of the intelligence of the orca.

【2】What's the main idea of the fourth paragraph?

A.The process of the research.

B.The outcome of the research.

C.The purpose of the research.

D.The significance of the research.

【3】Which of the following was the easiest for Wikie to copy?

A.The six human sounds.

B.All the new orca sounds.

C.Human-produced orca sounds.

D.Dolphin and sea lion sounds.

【4】What may the discovery help explain?

A.Why orcas imitate human speech.

B.Why orcas have different accents.

C.How orcas copy others' movements.

D.How orcas communicate with others.

23、   Every four or five years, vast quantities of warm water build up along the west coast of South America. This phenomenon, El Niño (厄尔尼诺), creates storms that cause devastating floods. The result is costly. In 2017, for instance, El Niño shut down northern Peru’s sugar-cane business.

Modern farmers view El Niño stoically (坚忍地). They use money saved in good years to rebuild in bad ones. But history suggests it need not be like that. In a paper published recently, Ari Caramanica, an archaeologist at University of the Pacific, in Lima, shows how it used to be done. And the answer seems to be, “better”.

Dr Caramanica and her colleagues have been studying the Pampa de Mocan, a coastal desert plain in northern Peru. Pampa de Mocan is not ideal for farming. Its soil contains little organic matter and the annual rainfall in non-Niño years is usually less than two centimetres. Today’s farmers therefore depend on canals to carry water from local rivers to their fields.

It had been assumed that ancient farmers had a similar arrangement — and so they did. But Dr Caramanica also found eight canals that could carry water far beyond the range of modern farms. Since the climate was similar to the present day’s when these canals were dug, and the river no higher, she supposed that they were intended to guide the floodwater arriving during Niño years. Around a quarter of the ancient agricultural infrastructure (基础设施) of this area seems to have been built only for managing Niño-generated floodwater.

Evidence reveals that Pampa de Mocan produced lots of crops in some years. Dr Caramanica’s team also discovered two cisterns (蓄水池) in the area. These, possibly, were used to store floodwater.

These findings suggest that, rather than resisting El Niño, early farmers in Pampa de Mocan were ready to make use of it when it arrived. Precisely how they managed their fields in Niño years remains to be discovered. But modern farmers might do well to learn from them.

【1】What do we know about El Niño from the text?

A.It can be used in farming.

B.It is usually caused by floods.

C.It has little influence on business.

D.It is always resisted as a disaster.

【2】What made the farms in Pampa de Mocan productive?

A.Rich soil.

B.Agreeable climate.

C.Abundant rainfall.

D.Agricultural constructions.

【3】What’s the author’s attitude to the ancient ways of dealing with El Niño ?

A.Approving.

B.Indifferent.

C.Critical.

D.Negative.

【4】Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

A.Surviving El Niño

B.Living with El Niño

C.Farming in Different Times

24、   An important drug that serves as the backbone of treatment for most childhood cancers, has become increasingly rare, and doctors are warning that they may soon be forced to consider rationing doses(定量供应剂量).

There have been long-term shortages of certain drugs and medical supplies in the United States for years, but doctors say the loss of this medication, vincristine(长春新碱) is leading to lots of problems, as there is no appropriate substitute. “This is truly a sad situation,” said Dr. Yoram Unguru, a doctor at the Herman and Walter Samuelson Children’s Hospital at Sinai in Baltimore. “Vincristine is our water. It’s our bread and butter. I can't think of a treatment for childhood cancer that doesn't use vincristine.” Shortages of the drug will likely affect children throughout the country, he said, forcing doctors to make difficult decisions. “There is no substitution for vincristine that can be recommended.” Dr. Unguru said. “You either have to skip a dose or give a lower dose or beg or borrow.”

Vincristine is one of the drugs used to manage leukemia, the most common childhood cancer. The Children’s Oncology Group, a group of researchers at hospitals and cancer centers, has made recommendations for changing clinical trial treatment rules involving vincristine, including checking the hospital’s supply before trial enrollment, and considering using half the dose if the full amount is not available.

“We are all disappointed,” said Dr. Michael Link, a doctor at the Stanford University School of Medicine. Without vincristine, many children with acute lymphoblasicleukemia will still be cured, “but this is a difficult disease to treat in general, and with one hand tied behind your back, it makes it much more difficult.” Dr. Link said.

Until earlier this year, there were two suppliers of vincristine: Pfizer and Teva. In July, Teva made a “business decision to discontinue the drug,” according to the Food and Drug  Administration (FDA).Since then, Pfizer has been the only supplier, and the company lately has been experiencing troubles with production. “Pfizer has experienced a delay, and we are working closely with them and exploring all ways to make sure this important cancer drug is available for the patients who need it,” the FDA said. Jessica Smith from Pfizer said the company would sped up additional shipments of the drug over the next few weeks in an effort to make up for Teva’s withdrawal from the market.

1Which of the following statements of vincristine is TRUE according to the passage?

A.It is quite rare and expensive. B.It is an irreplaceable drug.

C.It is widely used in adult cancers. D.It used to be as common as bread and butter.

2We can learn from Dr.Link’s words that _______.

A.vincristine will cause back pain

B.the treatment without vincristine is almost impossible

C.the treatment without vincristine can still be carried out

D.lack of vincristine will promote drug research

3What measures will the FDA take to solve the problem?

A.Exploring new ways to ship cancer drugs.

B.Making an effort to produce vincristine.

C.Cooperating with Pfizer to get more vincristine produced.

D.Persuading Pfizer and Teva to deal with the problem together.
