21、 Carbon is a chemical element which is present in organic compounds that make us organisms, plants as well as fossil. It is a vital component of the greenhouse gas CO2, the highest percentage of the global warming gas in the atmosphere.
These Green House Gases (GIIGs) along with other factors are responsible for the most discussed issues affecting the planet, climate change. Climate change has and still releases a huge set of environmental disasters which are fueling the difficulty of survival on the planet. In order to eliminate, reduce and adapt to these risks of survival, individuals, organizations, and countries will have to adopt carbon neutrality measures. The main aim of carbon neutrality is to achieve a net-zero emission either by balancing the emission or absorbing of carbon or quit the production of carbon. However, to really understand carbon neutrality, the carbon cycle should be first understood
The carbon cycle is the transfer of carbon through different media. Carbon has the ability to move in different media in different forms at different rates and tines. These different factors (rate, time, and media) are the phenomena underlying carbon neutrality. For instance, carbon released into the atmosphere by the rapid burning of fossil fills back as rain in the form of carbonate (碳酸盐) and is absorbed by the reservoirs (oceans, surface water, and the earth surface). Even though the exchange of carbon between some of these reservoirs takes a long time, some over 100 years, carbon was absorbed until now. The main problem existing today is that the emissions of CO2 are too high to be offset by the reservoirs, thereby leaving the offsetting task to us.
The European Union (EU) is taking all measures it can to offset carbon through Emission trading system which helps industries to manage their carbon footprints. Similarly, China, which is responsible for 25% of the world's CO2 emissions due to its economic and industrial structure is currently decreasing its energy consumption/GDP and CO2 emission/GDP, while increasing is forest cover and air quality through its 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2025) carbon neutrality actions.

Do you know electricity can change the way we taste food? Proving this fact is a revolutionary electric fork designed by Japanese researchers that can make any dish taste salty.
According to Hiromi Nakamura, a Post Doc Research Fellow at
Tokyo’s Meiji University, the technology can be very useful for people on
special diets. Patients with high blood pressure, for instance, can easily go
on a low-salt diet and still enjoy delicious food. And with the fork, there’s absolutely no risk of over-salting their food. Luckily, the voltage(电压) is so small that there is no risk of electrocution(触电) either.
The idea of adding electricity to food was first exposed as an experiment at the Computer
Human Interaction Conference in Austin, Texas, in 2012. Nakamura and her team connected a wire
to a 9-volt battery and passed it through a straw placed in a cup of sweet lemonade. Volunteers
reported that the charged lemonade tasted ‘blander’, because the electricity created the taste of salt.
Nakamura has improved the technology to be able to transfer an electric charge to food through
forks and chopsticks. “The metallic part of the fork is one electrode(电极), and the handle is the
other,” Nakamura explained. “When you take a piece of food with the fork and put it in your mouth,
you connect the circuit. When you remove the fork from your mouth, you disconnect the circuit. So
it actually works as a switch.”
Simon Klose, host of food program Munchies, who recently visited Nakamura to try out the
fork himself, called this form of ‘food hacking’ one of the greatest eating experiences he’d ever had.
“When I first heard of electric food, it sounded scary,” he said. He later continued to use a charged
fork to eat pieces of fried chicken, and found that the saltiness considerably increased as the electricity was connected.
Nakamura has been eating ‘electric’ food for the past three to four years in an attempt to
understand it better. “For me, ‘food hacking’ is about strengthening or weakening real food,” she
said. “It may seem like we’re cooking but we’re actually working on the human senses.”
【1】The electric fork may benefit people who__________.
A. need to go on a diet B. have high blood pressure
C. prefer food free of salt D. show interest in tasty food
【2】 Paragraph 4 mainly tells us _________.
A. how the electric fork works
B. what makes the circuit connected
C. how the technology was improved
D. why the electric fork was invented
【3】 From the passage, we learn that the electric fork______.
A. creates virtual taste B. changes people’s diets
C. helps cure diseases D. replaces salt in cooking
23、 Britain's got talent——but we're still wasting it. That's the main finding of a new report by researchers from Oxford University. Children of similar cognitive (认知) ability have very different chances of educational success; it still depends on their parents' economic, socio-cultural and educational resources. This contradicts a commonly held view that our education system has developed enough to give everyone a fighting chance. The researchers looked at data from groups of children born in three decades: 1950s, 1970s and 1990s.
They found significant evidence of a wastage of talent. Individuals with high levels of cognitive ability but with disadvantages in their social origins are unable to translate their ability into educational achievement to the same extent as their more advantaged counterparts (对照组). The research, funded by the Nuffield Foundation, found that only about half of the difference in educational achievement between children from advantaged and disadvantaged parental backgrounds is due to differences in their cognitive ability. The other half is due to other factors (因素)associated with their backgrounds.
“If we compare the educational achievement of children born in the 1990s to those in the late 1950s and early 1970s, we see that parents' economic resources have become a less important factor, but their socio-cultural and educational resources have grown in significance," says Dr. Bukodi. “That means that your parents' place in society and their own level of education still play a big part in how well you may do."
These experts are now calling for policy-makers to acknowledge that formal qualifications is only one channel for upward mobility (流动性)for high-ability individuals of disadvantaged backgrounds. Dr. Bukodi says, “These findings show that there are limits to how far inequalities of opportunity can be reduced through educational policy alone. Changes in educational policy aren't having the powerful effect we want."
【1】What is the main finding of the research?
A.We're wasting talent due to education system.
B.Children of similar cognitive ability have different chances of educational success.
C.Children's cognitive ability depends on different educational resources.
D.Education system has developed enough to give chilidren a fighting chance.
【2】How does the author mainly develop the text?

B.By discussing a result.
C.By giving examples.
D.By presenting reasons.

24、 So you're going to the royal wedding!Let's review a checklist of everything you'll need to know.
What to wear at the ceremony
Did you get your fascinator yet? That's a trick question because you probably don't even know what a fascinator is. Royal dress code etiquette(礼仪)states that women must wear hats for formal events, and fascinators are the preferred accessory(配饰).These funny hats boast a large decorative design. If you haven't packed one,no worries. Simply glue a cabbage to the side of your head. No one will be the wiser, and you can always snack on your fascinator should the wedding ceremony drag on. Gentlemen are expected to wear morning coats and top hats. Royals will likely wear their military uniforms.
Meeting the royals
Men, when greeting the royals, a simple bow will do. Not so low that it looks as if you're examining the carpet for any medals they might have dropped. This is a slight neck bow. Women perform a curtsy. Simply put one leg behind the other, bend your knees, bow your head slightly -and fall over because you've never done this before.
Chatting up the queen
The first rule of talking to the queen: Don't talk. That is, unless spoken to. If she does start a conversation and you find you've run out of interesting stuff to discuss after "Hello," break the ice with a joke "Hey, why did the queen go to the dentist? To get her teeth crowned!"
Dining
Every meal begins and ends with the queen. You can't start eating until she starts, and you stop when she stops. The queen doesn't appear to be a large eater,so you should wolf down your food in case she push the plate away after a few bites,When dining, the royals hold knives in their right hand and forks in their left with the tines facing down. Should they spill(洒落)even a pea, they drop one spot in the royal line of succession.
【1】What do women prefer for the royal wedding?
A.Morning coats. B.Military uniforms.
