二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、My 21-year-old niece, a second-year undergraduate, mentioned that she watches video lectures offline at twice the normal speed. Struck by this, I asked some other students I know. Many now routinely speed up their lectures when learning offline — often by 1.5 times, sometimes by even more. Speed learning is not for everyone, but there are websites where students discuss how odd it will be once they return to the lecture theatre. One contributor wrote: “Normal speed now sounds like drunk speed.”

Education was adapting to the digital world long before Covid-19 but, as with so many other human activities, the pandemic has given learning a huge push towards the virtual. Overnight, schools and universities closed and teachers and students had to find ways to do what they do only via the internet. “This is a time for schools and systems to reimagine education without schooling or classrooms,” says Professor Yong Zhao. Dr Jim Watterston in Australia thinks that, while the traditional classroom is still alive and well, education needs to be more adventurous and flexible. Earlier this year, Zhao and Watterston co-authored a paper in which they identified some major changes that should happen in education post-lockdown.

The first concerns the content, which should emphasize such things as creativity, critical thinking and leadership, rather than the collection and storage of information. “For humans to progress in the age of smart machines, it is essential that they do not compete with machines.”, they wrote, “Instead, they need to be more human.”

The second is that students should have more control over their learning, with the teacher’s role shifting from instructor to supervisor of learning resources, advisor and motivator. This is where so-called “active learning” comes in with a growing body of research suggesting that comprehension and memory are better when students learn in a hands-on way — through discussion and interactive technologies, for example. It’s also where the concept of “productive failure” applies. Professor Manu Kapurin argues that students learn better from their own or others’ failed attempts to solve a problem before or even instead of being told how to solve it.

If the progress of the times is unable to hold back the coming revolution in education, it seems unlikely that the traditional classroom is going to have any luck in its attempts trying to turn back the clock. As Laurillard puts it, “It took a global pandemic to drive home what we’ve been saying for 20 years.”

【1】By giving examples of “speed learning” in the first paragraph, the author wants to show that _________.

A.digital world is dramatically reforming the way of learning.

B.speed learning completely replaces normal speed learning.

C.returning to the lecture theatre is strange after speed learning.

D.education begins to adapt to digital world after Covid-19.

【2】According to the passage, which of the following statements is TRUE?

A.It is essential for smart machines to be more human.

B.Students should possess more information about creativity.

C.Students value others’ failure over their own failure.

D.“Active learning” calls for diverse ways of involvement.

【3】According to Zhao and Watterston, the major changes in education should include _________.

①learning mode       ②learning motive             ③learning attitude               ④learning focus

A.①④

B.②③

C.①③

D.②④

【4】According to the passage, what does the author most probably agree with?

A.Speed learning harms students’ learning efficiency.

B.The coming revolution in education is irreversible.

C.Teachers will play a less important role in the future.

D.The traditional classrooms will eventually disappear.

22、   Nao, a small robot, looks like a person. If Nao begged you not to shut it off, what would you do?

Scientists did a study to see how people treat robots that act like people. Eighty-nine people volunteered for the study. They were asked to help to improve Nao’s social skills by finishing two tasks with it.

The tasks with the robot didn’t matter, though. What the scientists really wanted to see was how the participants reacted once the tasks were over. They were asked to talk with Nao and finally shut Nao off but it was not easy to do. Some people did not want to turn the robot off while others took a long time to do it.

People often communicate with non-human objects such as TVs and computers nowadays. But robots seem more like humans. Robots can show social characters themselves, like speaking with human voices or taking the shape of a human body. Scientists said people might have seen Nao’s cries as a sign of independent thought. In turn, this could have led people to see the robot as having the human-like character.

For thousands of years, humans lived in a world where they were the only ones who could have conversations. Our brains learned to react to social situations in a certain way. But our brains are not used to telling the difference between real people and fake people. The robot expressed feelings and desires and that got people to want to treat the robot as if it were alive.

【1】Why did scientists use Nao in the study?

A.To learn about how people react to robots.

B.To communicate with humans.

C.To help people finish their daily tasks.

D.To improve people’s social skills.

【2】What did participants do when asked to turn off Nao?

A.All of them refused to turn it off.

B.Not all of them took action immediately.

C.All of them found it hard to operate it.

D.All of them followed the order soon.

【3】Compared with TVs, robots________.

A.are more similar to humans

B.often depend on humans

C.have independent thought

D.know well about different voices

【4】What can we know about our brains?

A.They are much cleverer than robots.

B.They can recognize fake people.

C.They can ’t tell the difference between real people and fake people.

D.They teach robots to show their feelings.

23、Last year scientists reported using a neural implant (神经植入物) in a man’s brain to restore his ability to communicate. The man has been partially paralyzed and unable to produce comprehensible speech since suffering a severe stroke. It is the latest advance in the exploding field of brain-computer interfaces (接口), or BCIs, which allow computers to read information out of a living brain.

Brain-computer interfaces are possible because of two facts. The first is that your brain contains hundreds of tiny maps. Each represents specific features of your physical feelings and intended actions. And crucially, the basic set of brain maps and their locations within the brain are very similar across individuals.

Thanks to their specialized functions and universal locations, brain maps are ideal entry points for BCI technologies. Picking up signals from a brain map is only the first step in making a useful BCI. Although the location of a brain map is the same across individuals, the details — what patterns of activity within the map mean — differ from person to person. In a sense, the unique features of your specific brain maps serve as a kind of encryption (加密), safeguarding your specific thoughts and feelings from would-be spies.

That brings us to the second fact that makes BCIs possible. Thanks to advances in machine learning, scientists have developed programs that can learn to recognize key patterns in a vast sea of numbers. They train these programs to decode (解码) brain signals by feeding them tons of examples. Researchers developing BCIs often create such examples by instructing an individual to think specific thoughts at specific times, creating a neural curriculum for the program to learn from.

While the universal features and locations of brain maps make them obvious entrances for BCIs, the unique features of your brain maps tend to protect them from spying eyes. In cases where BCIs have successfully read specific thoughts or intentions from a brain, it has been with the permission of the individual whose brain was being read. But there are surreptitious ways to train decoders on your brain without your knowledge. This can happen if your neural data falls into the hands of companies with detailed information about your activities.

Like all technologies, brain-computer interfaces are not necessarily good or bad. Yet while harvesting the benefits of BCIs, we need to ensure that we have the means to protect ourselves from corporations with every motive to take advantage of this technology for their financial gain.

【1】What can we learn about brain maps?

A.They carry unique messages.

B.They can process encrypted signals.

C.Their functions vary from person to person.

D.Their locations reveal human thinking patterns.

【2】What can we infer from the passage?

A.BCIs can boost brain signals dramatically.

B.BCIs could help recover from brain injuries.

C.Machine learning enables BCIs to read mind.

D.The decoding of brain may be affected by BCIs.

【3】What does the underlined word “surreptitious” in Paragraph 5 probably mean?

A.Secure.

B.Stable.

C.Standard.

D.Secret.

【4】What does the passage mainly talk about?

A.The future trend of BCIs.

B.The potential risks of BCIs.

C.The working principle of BCIs.

D.The general applications of BCIs.
