21、   Instead of paying to ship the items you don't need to your new home, why not donate them? Your old household goods like furniture will go to a new home where they will be appreciated. Here are some charities that might help.

Furniture Bank Network

Furniture Bank Network helps people furnish their homes with practical secondhand items donated by people within the community. Tax receipts for the value of the donated items are given to donors (捐赠者). Recipients get the furniture for free. People can get furnishings from their local Furniture Bank only if they are referred to the organization through one of its social service partners. It also encourages applicants to help the organization with volunteer work.

Habitat for Humanity

Habitat for Humanity is a global nonprofit. It collects monetary donations to build and remodel affordable housing so that those in need can apply for. You can also donate furniture and other household goods to Habitat for Humanity. It resells these items in home improvement stores and uses the money to fund its humanitarian efforts.

Goodwill

Goodwill resells donated furniture and other household items to fund its charitable objectives. Goodwill uses its earnings to provide career training and employment assistance to unemployed individuals. It also offers discounts to the people enrolled in its training programs, allowing them to affordably furnish their homes and buy clothes for their families.

Pick up My Donation

Pick up My Donation isn't actually a donation center and it doesn't pick up your donations. Instead, it helps you find local nonprofits and charity shops that do. If your donation isn't large enough for a local nonprofit to send a truck, Pick up My Donation can still help. The company will put you in touch with a local moving company to pick up your donation and take it to a nearby center.

22、Mindfulness meditation(冥想) is a practice used to achieve mental quiet and a sense of calm. It is a series of steps used to encourage reflection and deep breathing and to increase self-awareness.

A mindfulness meditation course may be as effective at reducing anxiety as a common medication(药物), according to a new study. The research, published on November 9 in JAMA Psychiatry, involved a group of 276 adults with untreated anxiety disorders. Half of the patients were randomly selected to take 10 to 20mg of escitalopram, the generic form of Lexapro, a common medication used to treat anxiety and depression. The other half were assigned to an eight-week course in mindfulness-based stress reduction. The results were stunning: Both groups experienced about a 20% reduction in their anxiety symptoms over the eight-week period.

The patients assigned to the meditation group were asked to attend a mindfulness meditation group class in-person once a week. Each class was around two-and-a-half hours long and held at a local clinic. They were also asked to meditate on their own for around 40 minutes per day. Hoge, the lead author on the study, compared the time commitment to “taking an exercise class or an art class”.

But according to Joseph Arpaia, an Oregon-based psychiatrist specializing in mindfulness and meditation, the daily time commitment is likely too much for many patients dealing with anxiety.

Arpaia says that he has worked to find less time-intensive mindfulness methods to help patients manage their anxiety. One technique he teaches is called a “one-breath reset” that helps patients calm themselves over the course of a single breath.

But despite his reservations, “It’s always interesting to see meditation work, and it works as well as medication,” he said. “My hope would be that people realize that there are things other than medication that can work.”

“My other hope would be that they realize that if sitting and following your breath makes you feel relaxed, great, but it doesn’t make everyone feel relaxed. Find something that does. Read a book, go for a walk, spend time gardening,” he said.

【1】What’s the main feature of mindfulness meditation?

A.It works in removing anxiety.

B.It makes people’s mind empty.

C.It drives people to keep calm.

D.It focuses on thoughts and awareness.

【2】What can we know about the new study?

A.Its result is hard to understand.

B.Its participants should attend courses face to face.

C.Its function is like an exercise class or an art class.

D.Its participants are divided into two equal groups freely.

【3】Which word can best describe the author’s attitude to the new study’s result?

A.Objective.

B.Skeptical.

C.Conservative.

D.Approving.

【4】How does Joseph Arpaia expect people to reduce anxiety?

A.They learn more about meditation.

B.They can bring a “one-breath reset” into focus.

C.They choose a proper way to relax besides meditation.

D.They can read books to develop mind instead of medication.

23、A century ago, you needn’t travel far to find unique fruits or vegetables. Today, because of the widespread adoption of industrial farming practices, about 90 per cent of North America’s fruit and vegetable varieties have disappeared. With that goes resilience (适应力) against pests and future weather patterns, not to mention delicious flavors. But a group of Canadians have taken crop diversity into their own gardening gloves.

The rescue mission started in the early 1980s with about 100 backyard gardeners from B. C, Ontario and Quebec. To keep their favorite varieties spreading, the gardeners decided to save and share their own seeds. Soon 1, 000 of these growers were mailing seeds across the country.

In 1995, these gardeners formed Seeds of Diversity, a nonprofit focused on preserving Canada’s botanical (植物的) heritage. A little over a decade later, the group founded the Canadian Seed Library to house each crop variety. The Seed Library now stocks (贮存) more than 2, 900 seed varieties, stored in a closet at the nonprofit’s office in downtown Waterloo.

To keep the library well stocked, Seeds of Diversity operates an adopt-a-seed program; members pay between S50 and S250 - the cost of full sponsorship - to introduce a specifc variety into the seed library forever. Under the program, volunteers sign up for spring growing, and tiny envelopes are mailed to each taker; the rarest seeds are sent to the most experienced gardeners. At the end of the growing season, packages of fresh seeds are shipped back to Waterloo for drying, weighing and testing, before going into storage.

Bob Wildfong, the executive director of the organization, considers the purple striped pole bean, an old Mennonite variety from the Waterloo area, his current favorite seed. He says the humble bean signifies something he’s found most beautiful about seed saving: the links between people and families. “I’m growing this Mennonite bean, and it’s not from my family, ” Wildfong says. “But now it’s part of my life, and I would like someone else to adopt it so it becomes part of their life, too. ”

【1】What can we infer based on the first paragraph?

A.Fewer Canadians are doing gardening now.

B.Varied crops can better fight pests and bad weather.

C.Today’s fruits and vegetables are less healthy than before.

D.Industrial farming practices have increased crop diversity.

【2】What do we know about Seeds of Diversity and the Canadian Seed Library?

C.Seeds of Diversity makes money by charging its members.

D.The Canadian Seed Library is based in downtown Waterloo.

【3】Which of the following statements is correct?

A.It costs the same to introduce different seeds into the library.

B.The volunteers of Seeds of Diversity can adopt any seed they want.

C.The growers dry, weigh and test the fresh seeds before storing them.

D.Seed sharing can strengthen personal connections between growers.

【4】Which is the best title for the passage?

A.Growing More Crops

B.The Art of Gardening

C.Saving the Seeds

D.The Beauty of Nature

24、   An epidemic is the occurrence of a disease which affects a very large number of people living in an area and which spreads quickly to other people. Like infectious diseases, ideas in the academic world are spreadable. But why some travel far and wide while equally good ones remain in relative insignificance has been a mystery. Now a team of computer scientists has used an epidemiological model to imitate how ideas move from one academic institution to another. The model showed that ideas originating at famous institutions caused bigger “epidemics” than equally good ideas from less well-known places, explains Allison Morgan, a computer scientist at the University of Colorado Boulder and lead author of the new study. “This implies that where an idea is born shapes how far it spreads, holding the quality of the idea constant.” says senior author Aaron Clauset, also at Boulder.

Not only is this unfair --- “it reveals a big weakness in how we’re doing science,” says Simon DeDeo, a professor of social and decision sciences at Carnegie Mellon University, who was not involved in the study. There are many highly trained people with good ideas who do not end up at top institutions. “They are producing good ideas, and we know those ideas are getting lost,” DeDeo says. “Our science, our scholarship, is not as good because of this.”

The Colorado researchers analyzed an existing data set of computer science department hires in North America, as well as a database of publications by these hires. First they looked at how five big ideas in computer science spread to new institutions. They found that hiring a new member accounted for a little more than a third of the time --- and in 81 percent of those cases, transfers took place from higher- to lower-status universities. Then the team imitated the broadcasting of ideas using an infectious disease model and found that the size of an idea “epidemic” (as measured by the number of institutions that published studies on an idea after it originated) depended on the status of the originating institution. The findings were published online last October in EPJ Data Science.

The researchers’ model suggests that there “may be a number of quite good ideas that originate in the middle of the pack, in terms of universities,” Clauset says. DeDeo agrees. There is a lot of good work coming out of less famous places, he says: “You can learn a huge amount from it, and you can learn things that other people don’t know because they’re not even paying attention.”

1The underlined word “this” in paragraph 2 refers to the fact that _________.

A.good ideas from less important institutions lack influence.

B.the quality of the original ideas tends to be not easy to maintain.

C.scholars in insignificant institutions consider their ideas valueless.

D.the time when good ideas were born decides how far they may spread.

2The case of some hires in paragraph 3 is used to indicate _________.

A.why the originating institutions transfer their new findings.

B.the way the movements of some new ideas happen and their effects.

C.how they carry the ideas from lower - to higher - status institutions.

D.the statistics the epidemological model provides for the researchers.

3Researchers such as Clauset are very much concerned about _________.

A.losing quite a number of great and creative thoughts.

B.missing the opportunities of getting more well-known.

C.misusing the epidemiological model in scientific research areas.

D.having difficulty in finding more proper science department hires.

4Which of the following might be the best title of the passage?

A.Infectious Diseases. B.Original Ideas.

C.Epidemiological Model. D.Idea Epidemic.
