21、 Have you ever experienced such an annoying thing as it took so long to open a web page? You're watching stops every few minutes, which ruined your internet experience. But it could be a thing of the past. On June 3, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology announced that China would issue licenses for the com- serialization of 5G. It means major telecom carriers will start to provide 5G services.
The “G” in “5G” refers to the generations of mobile network technologies. 1G let us talk to each other,2G let us send messages, 3G gave us mobile data and the internet, and 4G made all of these things faster.
Now 5G promises much faster data download and upload speeds, and more stable connections. This means that you will be able to download an entire HD movie in seconds and only experience a short delay between sending and receiving data. For example, when you have a video chat with your friend, there is generally a 100 to 200 milliseconds(毫秒) delay with 4G,but 5G will reduce the delay to 1 millisecond or less, which is almost real time.
With a 5G network, the short delay in information exchange will allow driverless cars to run more safely, as they will be able to communicate in real time and avoid potential dangers. Meanwhile, 5G-enabled wearable devices will keep doctors constantly updated on the health status of their patients and warn them immediately if there's something wrong. Besides, VR games will become more popular with 5G. The short delay of 5G will make the games feel even more real.
Though 5G will make our lives more convenient, it will not be perfect. For one thing, 5G will not “travel” far. On 4G networks, you can be 10 kilometers away from the nearest transmission(传输)base and barely lose signal. But 5G will only cover about 300 meters, meaning we will need more transmitters so that we can get signals. And in order to use 5G, we will have to buy new products specially designed for 5G that are currently expensive.
【1】What is the function of the first paragraph?
A.To provide a background of the topic. B.To offer basic knowledge of the topic.
C.To use an example to support the topic. D.To draw readers' attention to the topic.
【2】According to the passage, what is likely to happen to our life with 5G?
A.Doctors can treat more patients.
B.No drivers are needed in the near future.
C.Many advanced technologies will be further improved.
D.Children will hate playing VR games in the real world.
【3】What can be found when 5G is compared with 4G?
A.4G covers smaller areas. B.4G needs more transmitters.
C.5G signals can travel farther. D.5G costs higher in early stage.
【4】What is the text mainly about?
A.The development of 5G.
B.Challenges that 5G will face.
C.Benefits that people will get from 5G.
D.The difference that 5G will make to our lives.
22、 In 2015, astronaut Scott Kelly made himself a guinea pig for NASA's "twins study," designed to see what spaceflight does to the human body. It was for all the people who dream of human journeys to Mars and other destinations in space. Kelly rode a rocket into space and spent nearly a year on the International Space Station in low Earth orbit, while his identical twin brother, Mark Kelly, served as the comparison subject and stayed on Earth's surface.
The full results, published Thursday in the journal Science, showed that Scott Kelly experienced numerous physiological and chromosomal(染色体的)changes during his long stay in orbit, including changes in gene expression. His immune system went on high alert, both when he went to space and upon returning to Earth. His body acted as if it were under attack.
One of the most dramatic findings concerned epigenetics(实验胚胎学) — how genes are turned on or off to produce proteins. Gene expression changed in both Kellys during the study but in significantly different ways. The study found that more than 90 percent of Scott Kelly's gene expression changes returned to normal when he landed on the surface. His telomeres(染色体端粒), structures which break over time as part of the natural aging process, lengthened in space. But that didn't necessarily mean being younger, the study found, because most telomeres shortened dramatically when he returned to Earth.
Months later, tests showed that slight changes in telomeres length still remained and left some influence on Scott Kelly, which means he and his brother are no longer identical twins. "He might be at some increased risk for cardiovascular disease or some types of cancer," said Susan Bailey, a biologist at Colorado State University who led one of the investigations in the study.
However, the researchers, echoing what NASA has suggested previously, said the twins study turned up no showstoppers — no shocking health consequences that would surely prevent a human mission to Mars or similar long-duration mission.
【1】What does the underlined expression "a guinea pig" in Paragraph 1 mean?
A.a person who is strong enough to become an astronaut.
B.a person who is a leader of space exploration.

【2】What happens to an astronaut's body during a space flight?
A.The permanent changes in gene expression. B.The aging of cells.
C.The lengthened telomeres. D.The failure in immune system.
【3】What can we learn from the passage?
A.Scott Kelly will appear younger because his telomeres lengthened in space.
B.A long-duration spaceflight will be banned because of the damage to health.
C.Scott Kelly's gene expression changes were normal when he returned to the surface.
D.Scott Kelly might be more likely to develop cardiovascular disease or some types of cancer.
【4】What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Gene expression: Physiological Change of Proteins.
B.Space Experiment: Changes in Both Kellys.
C.Mars Exploration: an Unstoppable Human Mission.

23、Some people are early risers while others can’t seem to get to bed until well after midnight. Why is this? A research team has a new finding that shows how a “switch” in the biological clocks of early risers leads them to operate on a daily cycle of about 20 hours instead of a full 24-hour cycle.
This finding from Carrie Partch and her colleagues builds on decades of research into biological clocks, which control sleeping and waking, rest and activity, body temperature, heart rate and so on.
Partch and her colleagues focus on two main clock components: an enzyme (酶) known as casein kinase 1 (CK1) and a protein (蛋白质) called PERIOD. It turns out that the timing of biological clocks is strongly influenced by the rise and fall of the PERIOD protein, and this daily change normally takes place over 24 hours. But CK1 adjusts PERIOD levels by chemically modifying the protein, thereby adjusting its stability.
What they’ve discovered is that a part of CK1 acts as a switch. When this switch functions normally, it generates a near- perfect 24-hour cycle by keeping PERIOD’s stability right. In this case, people easily and correctly match their biological clocks with the daily coming and going of daylight.
If the switch favors a faster breakdown of the protein, the daily cycle grows shorter and less tightly bound to daylight. For these early risers, it’s a constant struggle to adjust to life in a 24-hour world. On the contrary, a switch that favors a slower breakdown will lengthen the clock, causing some people to be night owls (夜猫子).
Partch’s discoveries are sure to offer a new view on how the biological clocks make us tick. She hopes they’ll result in new ways to adjust the clocks in people with sleep disorders and even the means to reset the clocks in people who regularly travel overseas or work the night shift.
【1】What does Partch’s research team find?
A.What the biological clock is.
B.Why some people get up early.
C.Where two main clock components lie.
D.How people adapt to the biological clock.
【2】What has a strong effect on the biological clock according to the text?
A.Heart rate.
B.Sleeping.
C.Body temperature.

A.A slower breakdown of PERIOD makes the daily cycle longer.
B.The cycle of night owls’ biological clock is shorter.
C.A faster breakdown of casein kinase 1 lengthens the clock.
D.It is very easy for early risers to adapt to normal life.
【4】What’s a suitable title for this text?

24、 Girls are doing better than ever. Don’t let the pandemic block them.
For much of human history and in many places, girls were considered property. Or, at best, subordinate people, required to obey their fathers until the day they had to start obeying their husbands. Few people thought it worthwhile to educate them. Even fewer imagined that a girl could grow up to govern Germany, run the IMF or invent a vaccine.
In most of the world that vision of girlhood now seems not merely old-fashioned but unimaginably remote. In field after field girls have caught up with boys. Globally, young women now outnumber young men at university. The speed of change has been violent.
When societies handle girlhood well, the knock-on effects are astonishing. A girl who finishes secondary school is less likely to become a child bride or a teenager-age mother. Education boosts earning power and widens choices, so she is less likely to be poor or to suffer domestic abuse.
And she will pass on considerable advantages to later generation. A recent study by Citigroup and Plan International estimated that, if a group of emerging economies ensured that 100% of their girls completed secondary school, it could lead to a lasting boost to their GDP of 10% by 2030.
The COVID-19 pandemic could block progress for girls in poor countries, or even reverse it. During previous disasters, they have often suffered most. When Ebola forced west African schools to close in 2014,many girls dropped out, never went back and ended up pregnant or as child laborers. UNICEF warns that something similar could happen with COVID-19—but on a larger scale.
The risk of going backward is real. So it is crucial that, even if governments of poor countries have to tighten their belts, spending on education and girls should be a top priority.
