二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、   Dog eyesight declines with age. Injuries and ailments can cloud their vision. Zero was a highly trained, driven alert dog. So, at competitions, when he started running into obstacles and falling off the ends of teeter-totters(跷跷板), his owner, San Francisco-area dog trainer Dianne Morey, was concerned.

As time passed, she noticed a pattern. The problems only occurred at competitions held in horse arenas, where yellow obstacles blended into the color of the sand covering the floor. Concerned about his eyesight, Morey took Zero to a vet, who diagnosed him with a genetic condition. Morey found the diagnosis “heartbreaking”. After one last competitionwhich he wonZero retired. In the time since, he’s led a life full of activities like dock diving and hiking, where poor vision is less dangerous. While there’s no cure for his disease, protective eyewear has helped keep him safe while being active.

On average, dogs develop nearsightedness or farsightedness less often than humans, says Alexandra vander Woerdt at Animal Medical Center in New York City. However, their eyesight also declines with age. Injuries and some diseases such as glaucoma(青光眼) can cloud their vision. Thinking back, Morey realizes some behaviorsfor instance, the way Zero poked his nose before entering a gatewere signs his vision was impaired.

Identifying vision issues in dogs isn’t as easy as with humans. Dogs don’t bark wrong letters on the eye chart, and they’re very good at adapting. Treatments for eye problems may include eyedrops, medications or surgery. Eyewear can also play a role in treating or preventing many issues. Many dogs don’t like eyewear at first. Zero was an exception, thanks to his training in agility and tricks, Morey says.

1What made Dianne Morey concerned

A.Her trained dog Zero fell off in competitions.

B.She was badly hurt by a dog in a competition.

C.She found her eyesight was declining with age.

D.Her trained dog Zero wasn’t as clever as before.

2What can we know from the second paragraph

A.Zero is retiring soon.

B.Zero’s disease can’t be cured.

C.Zero got the disease from his birth.

D.Zero has recovered from his poor eyesight.

3Which of the following can replace the word “blended” in the second paragraph

A.added.

B.missed.

C.needed.

D.mixed.

4What makes it difficult to identify dogs’ vision problems

A.They are too fierce to control.

B.They don’t like to wear eyewear.

C.They adapt to the poor sight easily.

D.They bark wrong letters on the eye chart.

22、One of the most challenging aspects of traveling alone is trying to make friends on the road. But, despite the conception that solo travel means you have to be alone all the time, it can actually be one of the best times to socialize and meet new people. Read on to learn our tips for it!

Stay in hostels

If you’re worried about feeling lonely while traveling solo, one of the best ways to solve this problem is to stay in hostels. Their friendly and open-minded atmosphere makes it easy to strike up conversations. No matter where you are, you’ll always have at least one thing in common with your fellow hostel-mates: a love of travel!

Take part in group tours and hiking

When you’re traveling alone, it’s all too easy to stick to your own routine. If you’re eager to break out of it, try signing up for a group tour or activity. Try using a service like Busabout, where you can book tours tailored to your interests, location, and time-frame. Alternatively, book an Airbnb Experience to learn a local’s trade or taste regional wines, or join a foodie-friendly activity through Eatwith.

Use an app

With the development of technology in the travel space, solo travel is a good opportunity to use tech to your advantage. And, if you’re someone who has trouble introducing yourself to strangers in person, travel apps can be a great way to facilitate friendships on the road. With apps like Backpack and Tourlina, it’s never been easier to find and make friends with fellow travelers online. All you have to do is pack your bags and swipe right!

23、The pace of today's working life blurs (使模糊) the line between personal time and work time, and it increasingly mixes personal lifestyle and work style. And as companies are trying hard to attract and keep young people for their technical skills and enthusiasm for change, office culture is becoming an extension of youth culture. This may be no bad thing. For most of human history the middle-aged have ruled, but in the future, they will have to share power with fresh-faced youths.

There have been a number of reasons for this change and the most dramatic of these is technology. Children have always been more expert than their parents at something, but usually a game or a fashion, not the century's most important business tool. The Internet has started the first industrial revolution in history to be led by the young. Though there have been youth revolutions before, none of them made a big change the way the Internet has. Throughout the20th century, if a young person wanted to enter an American company they needed to leave their youth behind. They got a haircut, and probably a suit or at least a tie. Now the same hair, same clothes, even nearly the same hours apply to office and home.

If it had not been for the Internet, this change could not have happened. However, it did not happen because of the Internet only; the corporate restructurings (公司重组) of the 1980s and 90s broke down traditional hierarchies (等级制度). In many companies, seniority-based (基于资历的) hierarchies have been replaced by hierarchies based on performance. The abilities to please your superiors are no longer the most valued skills. Today's employees stay with companies only as long as they feel challenged and rewarded; moving from job to job is now a sign of ambition.

The rise of the young is a good thing, because it gives them more opportunity to put their ideas and energy into practice at their most creative stage in life. Nowadays youth and youth qualities seem to dominate, but the experience and maturity of older employees should be put to good use, too.

【1】A company tries to attract young people for their________.

A.office culture

B.modern lifestyle

C.changing attitude

D.technical abilities

【2】In the20th century, to enter an American company, a young person needed to ________.

A.work in the office and at home

B.have an eye-catching hairstyle

C.dress in the business style

D.leave the business tool behind

【3】According to Paragraph 3, company hierarchies are based on the employees' ________.

A.achievements

B.age and experience

C.skills with the Internet

D.ability to please the boss

【4】Why is the rise of the young a good thing?

A.They become more energetic in life.

B.They have taken over the companies.

C.Their creativity can be put to good use.

D.Their ideas appeal to a great many people.

【5】What can be inferred from the passage?

A.Young people will lead in fashion.

B.Young people will have more power.

C.Older people will step off the historical stage.

D.Older people will continue to be the main force.

24、   Lawrence Ferlinghetti, the poet, publisher, painter, social activist and bookstore owner, has been San Francisco’ honored poet. He turns 100 this month, and the city is making preparations to celebrate him in style. Readings and performances and an open house will take place at City Lights, the sacred bookstore he co-founded in 1953.

On March 24, 1919, Lawrence Felinghetti was born in Yonkers, New York. After spending his early childhood in France, he received his BA from the University of North Carolina, an MA from Columbia University, and a PhD from the Sorbonne.

He is the author of more than thirty books of poetry, including Poetry as Insurgent Art; A Coney Island of Mind. He has translated the works of a number of poets, including Nicanor Parra, Jacques Prevert, and Pier Paolo Pasolini. In addition to poetry, he is also the author of more than eight plays and three novels. Including Little Boy: A Novel, Love in the Days of Rage and Her.

In 1953, Ferlinghetti and Peter Martin opened the City Lights bookstore in San Francisco, California. It became a nerve center for the Beats and other writers. Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac and other writers from that era were Easterners who dropped into San Francisco for a spell. In 2001 it was made an official historic landmark. Now City Lights is almost certainly the best bookstore in the United States. It’s filled with serious world literature of all kinds.

If City Lights is a San Francisco institution, Ferlinghetti himself is as much of one. He has loomed over the city’s literary life. As a poet, he’s never been a critical favorite. But his flexible and plain-spoken and often powerful work — he has published more than 50 volumes — has found a wide audience. His collection “A Coney Island of the Mind” has sold more than 1 million copies, making it one of the best-selling American poetry books ever published.
